The young doctor studied his new patient thoughtfully. The older man had come to him for help with his pain. “My doctors tell me I haven’t long to live. I’ve been through chemo and radiation and now it’s just a matter of time. Six weeks… six months at most.”
“Please,” said the doctor gently, “take off your right shoe and sock.”
Puzzled, the man did as he was told.
“Now look at the bottom of your foot.”
The man brought his foot up across his left knee and stared at the bottom of his foot. “What am I looking for?”
“An expiration date stamped on your foot.”
He looked again, “I don’t see one.”
“Good!” The doctor smiled. “Do you want to look at the other foot?”
The man shook his head. He was thoroughly puzzled.
“Only God knows when a person’s life will be over. Doctors only make guesses. God never stamps an expiration date on us. Which means we’re going to help you live as healthful and happy a life as you can for as long as God gives you.”
With that the doctor outlined a program of healthful diet and appropriate exercise. He encouraged his patient to have fun, do things he enjoyed, and engage himself with other people and with God.
The doctor received Christmas cards from that man for at least five years until they lost touch with each other.
Check Your Foot
Check your foot. Is there an expiration date stamped on you? Rest your life in the Lord and live it to the best and fullest that you can.
Even if you have been afflicted with disease or disability. Even if your heart has been broken by sorrow. Even if disappointments have marred your dreams and ambitions. Even if your bank account is empty and you don’t know where your next dollar or meal is coming from. Even so—thank God for your life.
Give your worry to Jesus because it is more than you can ever handle alone. The “dark side” is always ready to fill the mind with negative, destructive thoughts and impulses. Only Jesus can put the heart at peace. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).
As one writer so aptly put it: “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.”
In all circumstances, take hold of the promises of God. “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (I Peter 5:6, 7).
It’s not time to look down at your feet. It’s time to look up!
