Poem 2 – Wisdom and Understanding
The Gift No Human Being Can Bestow
The years of their instruction passed
beneath the guiding hand of God.
Day after day and step by step,
His faithful presence went with them.
The teachers taught them many things:
the courses of the stars and writing,
the art of numbers and royal power,
and all that people count as greatness.
The young men listened carefully
and studied with untiring diligence.
They faithfully fulfilled each duty
and acted conscientiously and well.
Yet in the midst of all their learning,
one truth remained concealed from many:
no school within this fallen world
possesses what belongs to God alone.
No teacher can impart to hearts
what heaven breathes into a life.
No book can ever bring forth
what God’s own Spirit gives to humanity.
The Most High saw the faithfulness
that marked Daniel and his friends.
He saw their trust from day to day
and how their hearts belonged to Him.
Therefore, He gave them something more
than knowledge and extensive learning.
He granted insight and understanding
through His gracious, fatherly hand.
Words became clear within their minds
that still remained concealed from others.
They grasped their meaning and connection
where many still stood in the dark.
They learned both rapidly and deeply,
yet never grew enriched with pride
in their abilities and strength,
as though they had achieved it all themselves.
For Daniel always understood
the source from which true wisdom comes.
Neither human intellect nor praise
could ever be the origin of this gift.
The Lord who governs earth and heaven
is He who grants true understanding.
He opens eyes and hearts and minds
and places insight deep within them.
Hananiah shared this same devotion
that highly honored all God’s ways.
Mishael sought from day to day
the Lord who is the source of truth.
Azariah also remained humble,
prepared to do whatever God desired.
Together they continued on the path
that God’s own hand had laid before them.
The more they learned, the more they honored
the One who had created them.
For genuine wisdom does not lead
to pride, but to a deeper understanding.
Babylon extolled its wise men,
whose fame was spread throughout the kingdom.
Its astrologers were highly honored,
and all were familiar with their ways.
Yet often those renowned men trusted
only in their own conclusions.
They searched for truth apart from God
and found no more than scattered fragments.
The human mind can search out much
and probe the mysteries of the world.
Yet without the light that comes from God,
many secrets still remain unsolved.
Daniel perceived both early and clearly
that God’s own truth was greater.
It reached far beyond everything
that human beings could discover.
Heaven awakened within him
a deeper gift of understanding.
Yet no one in the world then knew
the purpose God had for this gift.
But soon it would become apparent
why all of this had been essential.
For dreams would one day be revealed
that only God’s own light could interpret.
The Lord prepares His servants well
long before He opens any doorway.
He does not wait to grant His gifts
until a sudden crisis has begun.
And so within Daniel, day by day,
the wisdom from above increased.
It was not loud or seen by all,
yet it was worth far more than gold.
The teachers saw his diligence,
his knowledge, and his lucid mind.
But none could fully recognize
what God was doing secretly within him.
For God’s work often starts in smallness,
concealed from all human attention.
Yet when the hour appointed comes,
what He has planted is revealed.
The friends remained united and faithful,
although the way at times seemed long.
They knew that every form of knowledge
was God’s own gift, not their achievement.
Thus they were being made prepared
for greater service in the coming years.
The Lord was shaping heart and mind
according to His wise and gracious plan.
For wisdom without reverence for God
will pass like grass upon the field.
But understanding born of heaven’s light
will never lose its truth or strength.
And so Daniel’s example still shines
through every age and every land:
The Most High gladly gives His people
understanding and wisdom from above.
Prophetic Reflection
True wisdom is not the result of human effort alone.
God grants understanding to those who trust and honor Him.
Daniel and his friends united education with reverence for God. Therefore, they could understand more than many of Babylon’s scholars.
God still seeks people who are willing to learn, study, and work while recognizing that all true wisdom ultimately comes from Him. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10)
