Devotional for the Day
Jesus describes His followers as people who are waiting for their Lord. This waiting is not drowsy, indifferent, or empty. It is watchful waiting, a life filled with expectation, and a heart that is ready at any moment to open the door when the Lord comes. The thought is deeply personal: The King comes not only as the Ruler of the world, but as the Master to whom the house belongs and who knocks at the door.
Being ready for the King therefore means more than knowing a doctrine about the second coming of Jesus. It means living in a vibrant relationship with Him. Those who wait for their Lord live differently. They direct their hearts toward Him, arrange their priorities, examine their ways, and ask in everyday life: Is my life open to Christ? Would I rejoice if He came today? Is there anything I am hiding from Him or refusing to release?
Throughout the month of August, we have seen that sanctification and character development are part of our preparation for the Second Coming. We have reflected on daily surrender, prayer, God’s Word, obedience motivated by love, the fruit of the Spirit, gentleness, patience, humility, bringing our thoughts under Christ’s authority, self-control, faithfulness in little things, forgiveness, a firm foundation, God’s will, being a light in everyday life, service, self-examination, renewed mercy, burning lamps, family life, ripeness for the harvest, and peace in the heart. All these themes lead to the same truth: Christ is preparing a people who belong to Him.
Watchful expectation is therefore not an anxious fixation on events, but a faithful life with Jesus. It is shaped not by fear, but by love. A person who loves Christ wants to be ready—not because they must flee from the Lord, but because they long to meet Him; not because they can save themselves, but because they trust the Savior who cleanses, sustains, and perfects them.
The King is coming. This truth should not make our lives narrower, darker, or more burdensome, but clearer, purer, and more hopeful. If Jesus is truly coming, then no day is meaningless. No decision is entirely insignificant. No prayer is in vain. No act of faithfulness performed in secret is lost. Everything lived in Christ today is already part of our preparation for the day of His glory.
Waiting Means Remaining Connected
Jesus does not call us to wait without a relationship. Those who wait for the Lord must remain connected to Him. A heart that comes to Christ every day remains watchful. It is not so easily lost in indifference, routine, or self-confidence. It knows: I need Jesus today, not merely on the final day.
Ellen G. White wrote:
“Only those who have become like Christ can stand when He appears.”
(Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 413)
This Christlikeness does not develop suddenly at the final moment. It grows through daily life with God. Those who remain with Christ today will be prepared by Him for the day when He appears visibly.
Readiness Is Revealed in Everyday Life
Readiness is not merely an inward feeling. It becomes visible in everyday life. A ready heart seeks forgiveness instead of holding on to bitterness. It chooses truth instead of nurturing compromise. It serves instead of revolving only around itself. It remains faithful in little things because it knows that God also sees what is done in secret.
Watchfulness therefore means refusing to fall asleep spiritually today. It means not allowing our love for Christ to grow cold. It means taking God’s Word seriously, not grieving the Holy Spirit, and continually opening our hearts anew to the Lord. Those who live this way do not wait idly, but fruitfully.
Keeping the Door Open
Jesus speaks of people who immediately open the door for their Lord when He comes and knocks. This image asks us quietly but seriously: Is the door of my heart open? Does Christ have access to my thoughts, plans, relationships, time, habits, and decisions? Or are there rooms that I am still keeping closed to Him?
The Lord does not come to enter a stranger’s house. He comes to those who belong to Him. Readiness, therefore, is in its deepest sense an open heart—a heart that says: Lord, let everything belong to You. Cleanse what is impure. Put in order what is disordered. Strengthen what is weak. Complete what You have begun.
The coming King prepares His people through grace. He does not call us to panic, but to fellowship. He does not call us to save ourselves, but to surrender. He does not call us to an outward appearance of religion, but to a character shaped by His presence. Therefore, we may live today with both joy and seriousness: The King is coming, and my heart must remain open to Him.
Prayer
Dear Father in Heaven,
prepare my heart for the second coming of Jesus.
Help me not to live indifferently, drowsily, or superficially, but to remain watchful and connected to Christ.
Open the areas of my life that I have not yet completely surrendered to You.
Shape my character through Your grace so that love, faithfulness, purity, humility, and peace may grow within me.
Let me be ready when the King comes, and help me to meet Him with an open heart even today.
Amen.

A heart that is ready for the King is one that is open to Christ today and allows itself to be shaped daily by His grace.
