Devotional for the Day
Jesus knew that His disciples would deeply feel the coming separation. They had left everything to follow Him. They had heard His voice, experienced His presence, witnessed His miracles, and known His love. Now He spoke about going to the Father. To the disciples, this must have sounded like a loss they could not yet understand. Into this concern, Jesus spoke the words: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
These words reveal the heart of Christ. He does not abandon His own. Although He visibly returned to the Father, His church was not left without comfort, guidance, or hope. He promised the Holy Spirit, He promised His presence, and He promised His return. The disciples were to understand that Jesus’ journey to the Father did not mean they would be forgotten. The Lord did not leave to create distance, but to complete the plan of redemption and ultimately take His own to be with Him.
The image of orphans is very powerful. An orphan feels unprotected, alone, and without anyone to stand up for them. Jesus explicitly says that His followers will not be left in this condition. They belong to Him. He takes responsibility for them. He knows their weakness, their fear, their questions, and their struggles. He does not leave them in a hostile world without divine help.
The return of Jesus is therefore not merely a great future event, but also the answer to faith’s deepest longing: Christ is coming to His own. He does not come to strangers, but to people whom He has redeemed. He comes to those who have loved Him, waited for Him, sought Him, and trusted Him. The day of His glory will be, for God’s children, the day they are taken home, the day of perfect fellowship, the day when nothing will ever again separate the Lord from His people.
Even today, there are moments when a person may feel spiritually abandoned. Prayers seem unanswered, the path becomes difficult, people disappoint us, burdens weigh us down, and God’s presence is not always felt with the same intensity. Yet Jesus’ promise remains: “I will not leave you as orphans.” Our feelings may change, but His Word stands firm. Christ is not distant or indifferent. He is present through His Spirit, He intercedes for us before the Father, and He will visibly return.
The Lord Does Not Forget His Own
The return of Jesus shows that God does not leave His children behind in history. This world, with its suffering, tears, temptations, and struggles, will not forever remain the final home of the redeemed. Christ purchased His church at a great price, and He will not forget what He has purchased. His love remains faithful to the end.

This promise brings comfort to everyone who is waiting. Jesus will not come secretly or ambiguously. The Savior will appear, and His children will recognize that every promise of God has been true. The heavens will open because the Lord is coming to His own.
His Presence Today, Its Fulfillment on That Day
Jesus does not leave His followers as orphans because He is already near to them today. Through the Holy Spirit, He comforts, guides, corrects, strengthens, and preserves His people. This presence is real, even when it is not always visible. It sustains them through daily life, temptation, sorrow, and times when their faith is tested.
Yet Christ’s present nearness also points toward its future fulfillment. Today we live by faith; then we will live by sight. Today we hear His voice through the Word of God; then we will see Him. Today we experience His comfort in the midst of a broken world; then He will receive His own into His glory. The return of Jesus will bring every feeling of abandonment to a permanent end because God’s people will be with their Lord forever.
Hope for Lonely Hearts
Jesus’ promise speaks especially to hearts that feel alone. Someone may be surrounded by people and yet feel abandoned inside. Someone may be carrying a burden that others do not understand. There may be silent tears, unspoken worries, or the feeling of walking the path of faith alone. It is precisely there that Christ says: You are not forgotten. You are not abandoned. I am coming to you.
This hope prevents our waiting from becoming empty. It gives us the strength to continue today. Because Christ is coming, we can remain faithful. Because He does not abandon His own, we can continue to hope even in dark hours. Because His return is certain, our hearts can know that separation is not final, loneliness will not have the last word, and history will not end with loss, but with a glorious meeting.
The coming King is the Lord who does not leave His children as orphans. He is already near today, and He will visibly return. Therefore, faith can find rest today and say: I am not abandoned. Christ knows me, Christ sustains me, and Christ is coming to His own.
Prayer
Dear Father in heaven,
thank You that Jesus does not leave His disciples as orphans.
Help me trust Your presence even when I do not always feel it with the same intensity.
Comfort my heart in moments of loneliness, uncertainty, or weariness.
Strengthen my faith in the return of Jesus, and help me know that Christ does not forget His own.
Prepare me for the day when the Lord visibly returns and takes His people to be with Him forever.
Amen.

In which area of your life do you need the assurance today that Christ will not abandon you? - Pray: “Lord Jesus, help me trust Your presence until You visibly return.”
- Put it into practice: Encourage someone today who feels lonely or burdened with a word of hope or a quiet gesture of love.
