He was the king who besieged Jerusalem and carried captives away to Babylon, thereby bringing Daniel and his friends into his kingdom.
In Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar repeatedly encountered the God of Israel. Through Daniel, dreams, and extraordinary events, he had to recognize that a power existed higher than his throne.
When he dreamed about a great statue, none of his wise men could explain it. God revealed both the dream and its meaning to Daniel.

The Life Story of Nebuchadnezzar – From Pride to Worshiping the Most High
The Powerful King of Babylon
Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon and one of the most important rulers of his time. His empire was powerful, his armies were feared, and his city of Babylon was regarded as a symbol of human greatness.
He ruled over nations, lands, and kings. From a human perspective, his power appeared almost limitless.
Yet this very king would have to learn that there is a kingdom higher than Babylon, higher than every throne, and stronger than every human power.
Jerusalem Falls
Nebuchadnezzar marched against Jerusalem and brought Judah under Babylonian rule. Captives were taken to Babylon, including young men from royal and noble families.
Among them were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. In Babylon, they were given new names and prepared for service in the royal court.
Nebuchadnezzar did not realize that these young captives would repeatedly demonstrate to him that the God of Israel is alive.
The Dream of the Statue
One night, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that deeply troubled him. He demanded that his wise men not only interpret it, but also tell him what the dream itself had been.
None of them could do so. The wisdom of Babylon had reached its limit.
But God revealed the dream and its meaning to Daniel. Daniel explained the great statue to the king and showed him that the kingdoms of the world rise and fall, while God’s kingdom will endure forever.
The Golden Image
Although Nebuchadnezzar had learned something about God’s sovereignty through the dream, he later erected a great golden image on the plain of Dura.
Everyone was commanded to bow down before this image when the music began. Anyone who refused would be thrown into the burning fiery furnace.
In doing so, Nebuchadnezzar revealed how strongly his heart was still controlled by pride and the desire to receive absolute worship.
The Three Men in the Fiery Furnace
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship the image. They confessed that their God was able to deliver them, but even if he did not, they would not worship the image.
Nebuchadnezzar became filled with fury and ordered the furnace to be heated even hotter. The three men were bound and thrown into it.
But then the king saw something incomprehensible. Not three, but four men were walking freely in the fire, and the fourth looked like a son of the gods.
God’s Deliverance Becomes Visible
Nebuchadnezzar called the three men out of the fire. They were unharmed. Not a hair on their heads was singed, their clothes were not burned, and not even the smell of fire was upon them.
Nebuchadnezzar then had to confess that the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had sent his angel and delivered his servants.
He had seen a God who not only reveals dreams, but can also preserve his faithful servants in the middle of the fire.
The Dream of the Great Tree
Later, Nebuchadnezzar had another dream. He saw a great tree that reached to heaven, and many living creatures found shelter beneath its shade.
But a watcher from heaven commanded that the tree be cut down. Only the stump was to remain in the ground, bound with iron and bronze.
Daniel interpreted the dream and warned the king. Nebuchadnezzar was to break off his sins by practicing righteousness and his iniquities by showing mercy to the poor.
“Great Babylon”
For a time, everything appeared to remain calm. But one day, Nebuchadnezzar was walking upon the royal palace in Babylon.
He looked over his city and essentially declared that he had built this great Babylon through his own power and for the honor of his own majesty.
At that moment, the true condition of his heart was revealed. He saw his greatness, but not God’s gift. He admired his own work, but did not honor the Lord who rules over every kingdom.
The Humbling of the King
While the words were still in his mouth, a voice came from heaven. Nebuchadnezzar was told that his royal authority would be taken away from him.
He was driven away from people, lived among the animals of the field, and ate grass like cattle. His body was wet with the dew until the appointed time had passed.
The most powerful man in Babylon was brought so low that he had to recognize that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of humanity.
Looking Toward Heaven
At the end of the appointed time, Nebuchadnezzar lifted his eyes toward heaven. Then his reason returned to him.
He praised the Most High, honored the One who lives forever, and recognized that God’s dominion is an everlasting dominion.
His dignity and kingdom were restored to him. But he was no longer the same king he had been before. He had learned that pride cannot endure before God.
