📚 BELIEVE HIS PROPHETS

📖 Daily Bible Reading: 🙏 Job 21

❓ Why Do the Wicked Prosper?

✨ When reality contradicts our simple answers

🌐 Read online here

📍 Introduction

Job responds to Zophar’s speech and fundamentally challenges the beliefs of his friends. They claim that the wicked are always punished quickly. Job, however, observes something different: many people live without God and still enjoy health, prosperity, and a long life. Job chapter 21 challenges us not to reduce God’s actions to simple rules.

🧵 Commentary

Job first asks his friends to listen to him carefully. Their willingness to listen would already be a form of comfort to him. Only then does he begin to refute their arguments.

He asks a simple but decisive question: Why do wicked people often live long lives, become wealthy, and even gain influence? Their families prosper, their children grow up, their homes are secure, and they seem to be spared from severe misfortune.

Job describes how these people enjoy their lives. They celebrate, make music, and spend their days in prosperity. At the same time, they deliberately reject God and say, “Leave us alone! We do not want to know Your ways.” Yet outwardly, their lives still seem successful.

In this way, Job contradicts the simple idea held by his friends that God immediately rewards or punishes every person according to their behavior. Reality presents a far more complex picture.

Job does not deny that God is just or that judgment exists. However, he makes it clear that this judgment is not always immediately visible. God’s timing often differs from human expectations.

Job then criticizes the reasoning of his friends. They claim that disaster comes upon the children of the wicked. Job responds that each person is responsible for their own life. Justice cannot be explained through simple formulas.

Finally, Job reminds them that both the rich and the poor eventually die. All people follow the same path to the grave. Therefore, outward success is not a reliable measure of God’s approval.

Job chapter 21 invites us to remain humble. Not everything we observe can be explained immediately. God’s justice remains certain, even when we do not fully understand its timing or the way it is carried out.

🧺 Summary

Job 21 challenges the claim that the wicked are always punished immediately. Through his observations, Job shows that many wicked people live successful lives. In doing so, he makes it clear that God’s justice cannot be judged according to simple human rules.

🔦 Message for Us Today

Outward success is not proof of God’s approval, and suffering is not certain proof of guilt. God’s justice often works in a way and at a time that we do not fully understand. Therefore, we should not judge people by the visible circumstances of their lives, but trust God as the righteous Judge.

📝 Reflection

Do I judge God’s actions according to a person’s outward success, or do I trust that God judges justly, even when I do not fully understand His ways?
