Help Comes from the Lord
When Trust Is Stronger Than Human Power

Introduction
Psalm 20 is a prayer for the king before an approaching conflict. The people ask God for protection, help, and victory. Yet the true focus of the psalm is not military strength, but trust in the name of the Lord. While others place their confidence in chariots and horses, God’s people place their hope in Him. Psalm 20 therefore reveals powerfully what true security is founded upon: not visible resources, but God’s presence and faithfulness.

Commentary
The psalm begins with a blessing: “May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble.” From the very beginning, it becomes clear that distress is neither concealed nor suppressed. The danger is real, but it is immediately brought into God’s presence.
The people ask that the name of the God of Jacob protect the king. In biblical thought, God’s name represents His character, faithfulness, and power. This protection is therefore not based on a magical formula, but on the God who has revealed Himself to His people.
The prayer then asks for help from the sanctuary and support from Zion. This makes one truth clear: the king is not meant to draw his strength from himself. His help comes from God.
The people also remember the king’s sacrifices and devotion. They ask God to strengthen his heart and cause his plans to succeed. The central concern, however, is not merely personal success. It is the mission that the king is called to fulfill within the framework of God’s will.
The tone then begins to change. Confidence grows out of prayer: “We will rejoice in your salvation.” Even before the victory becomes visible, faith is already beginning to celebrate.
This attitude is remarkable. Faith does not always wait for the outcome before trusting God. It can express hope beforehand because God’s character is trustworthy.
The central confession of the psalm then follows: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” Chariots and horses were symbols of military strength at that time. Those who possessed many of them were considered powerful and well prepared.
David does not deny that such resources exist or that they may have practical importance. Yet he refuses to entrust them with his ultimate security. Human strength remains limited. Strategies can fail, resources can be lost, and power can change within a very short time.
The name of the Lord, however, remains. God’s faithfulness does not depend on political conditions or military superiority.
The contrast becomes even clearer in the following thought: those who rely only upon their own strength may fall, but God’s people can be raised up and stand firm.
Psalm 20 is therefore not criticizing responsible preparation, but misplaced trust. It is possible to use available resources while still trusting God. The danger arises when those resources themselves become our true source of security.
This message reaches far beyond military situations. Today, “chariots and horses” can take many forms: money, influence, professional status, knowledge, technology, relationships, or personal abilities. All these things may be valuable, but none of them can take God’s place.
The psalm ends as a prayer once again: “Save, LORD! May the King answer us when we call.” The beginning and the ending belong together. The people’s trust is not abstract; it is expressed through concrete prayer.
From a Christian perspective, Psalm 20 also possesses a deeper messianic significance. The king of Israel points beyond himself to Christ, the true anointed King. Our final salvation is not founded upon human power, but upon Him. Jesus triumphs not through earthly armies, but through His sacrifice, His resurrection, and His coming reign.
Psalm 20 therefore leads us to a fundamental question: What sustains me when my own abilities are no longer sufficient? The psalm answers clearly: the name of the Lord remains our secure foundation.

Psalm 20 is a prayer for God’s help before a great challenge. The people ask for protection, support, and success for the king. Message for Us Today
We may plan, work, and use our abilities responsibly. Yet Psalm 20 reminds us not to place our hope in these things. Money, abilities, relationships, and human security can all change. God remains. Especially when facing major decisions and difficult challenges, we may therefore pray, act, and consciously confess at the same time: Our help comes from the Lord.
