1. Have a volunteer read Joshua 2:1, Numbers 13:1,2, 25-28, 33.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- Why would Joshua start the mission of conquering Canaan by sending out spies?
- Personal Application: Because God gave Israel a second chance to enter Canaan, what should that tell us about how God extends grace to us and why we should extend grace to those who need it? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states, “Second chances and grace works for some people, but when you are being abused and he asks for a second chance, you could be putting yourself into a dangerous situation. Or a person who steals from you asks for a second chance, you may be giving him a second chance to steal even more if they haven’t dealth with the cause.” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Joshua 2:2-11, Hebrews 11:31, James 2:25.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What do these texts tell us about Rahab?
- Personal Application: What does this story tell us about how God must have our ultimate obedience? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “Rahab is depicted as a model of faith. How can we appreciate the openness of people to God, even if their lifestyle is far from the Biblical ideal? How can we appreciate their faith without condoning some of their practices?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Joshua 2:12-21, Exodus 12:13,22,23.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What does this tell us about the agreement between the spies and Rahab?
- Personal Application: What gospel message can we find in these two stories? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “Have you ever found a situation in which required a combination of justice and grace? What are some practical ways of merging the two – showing grace but exacting justice?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Joshua 9:1-20.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What are the differences between Rahab and the Gibeonites? Why is it meaningful?
- Personal Application: Have you ever found yourself struggling between what appears to be two conflicting Biblical values? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study:: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
