6: The Hour of His Judgment – Teaching Plan

Key Thought: The prediction of the appearance of the Messiah in Daniel 9 that Jesus fulfilled was a surety that the prophecy of Daniel 8 concerning the judgment was also true.

1. Have a volunteer read Daniel 8:14.

1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
2. What specific time was Daniel given regarding the cleansing of the sanctuary?
3. Personal Application: What does it mean to you that we are living in the days of the judgment? Share your thoughts.
4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “How is the time of the first coming of Jesus related in any way to the time of the judgment?” How would you respond to your relative?
   (Note: Daniel 9:23. Understand the vision. The vision is in Daniel 8:14. So the angel is connecting the two events. The time of the coming of the Messiah is “determined” – cut off, amputated – from the 2300 days.)

2. Have a volunteer read Daniel 9:23-27.

1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
2. What specific instruction does the angel give to Daniel?
3. Personal Application: What does it mean to you that in the middle of the last week, the Messiah was to be “cut off” but not for Himself and that He would cause the sacrifice and oblations to cease? Share your thoughts
4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “How do you determine the time period of Daniel 9 relating to the Messiah’s coming?” How would you respond to your friend?
   (Note: The commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem is found in Ezra 7:7-12. The seventh year of Artaxerxes was 457 BC. Going forward 69 weeks – or 483 years brings us to 27AD. Luke 3 tells us Jesus was anointed (and baptized) in the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar. That was 27AD. Right on time. Mark 1:15 Jesus said that “the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the gospel.”)

3. Have a volunteer read Leviticus 16:16, and Leviticus 23:26-29.

1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point in this text is.
2. Why did God command that there be a cleansing of the sanctuary and what does it teach us about the gospel
3. Personal Application: How do we apply the offering by fire and afflicting our souls to the time we live in now in the Day of Judgment or Day of Atonement? Share your thoughts.
4. Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “On the Day of Atonement, the Jews were to do no work on that day. But since our Day of Atonement has lasted since 1844, it’s not possible for us not to work for so long a period of time. I don’t see how that can apply to us today?” How would you respond to your relative?

4. Have a volunteer read Daniel 9:26, Romans 5:6-9.

1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
2. How long after His anointing by the Spirit and baptism in the river did Jesus exercise His ministry as a Preacher and Teacher?
   (Note:. A Jew couldn’t be a Rabbi until he turned thirty. Luke 3:23 states that Jesus was about 30 when baptized. He died three and a half years later at age 33 in the middle of the last week of prophecy.)
3. Personal Application: How important is it that this prophecy fulfilled in Christ shows that God loved us and was willing to die for sinful humanity in advance? Share your thoughts.
   (Note: Jesus said, “I have told you these things before they come to pass, so that when they come to pass, you might believe.” John 14:29. See Amos 3:7.)
4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
