Where does the Sabbath come from? When is it mentioned for the first time?

Exodus 31:16 – Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
9.2 Sabbath Before Sinai
How could the Israelites be nourished in the desert? Manna was not there on Sabbath – a day of rest.
