In 2026, the Doomsday Clock is set to 85 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been. Defined not in hours. Not minutes. But seconds. According to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, this adjustment reflects a convergence of global risks: nuclear tensions among major powers, ongoing wars, weakening nuclear arms control, environmental instability, and the rapid advance of artificial intelligence without sufficient ethical restraint. The message is sobering. Humanity is closer to the edge than it has ever been. This clock is not prophecy. It does not predict the return of Christ. But it is a warning. When scientists who study global risk say we are seconds from catastrophe, the Church cannot be distracted or silent. The clock does not announce the end of the world. It reveals the condition of the world.
Jesus said, "You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come" (Matthew 24:6, NIV). Christ did not deny global turmoil. He placed it within a larger framework. He called His followers not to panic, but to remain faithful. The Bible never presents the last days as an excuse for fear. They are a call to purpose. Prophecy was not given to satisfy curiosity or generate alarm. It was given to shape character, awaken conscience, and mobilize God's people for mission. While scientists adjust seconds, Heaven looks for readiness. While the world counts down, God calls His people to look up, stand firm, and move forward. This is not a time for sensationalism or speculative timelines. It is a time for steady faith, compassionate witness, and disciplined obedience. "So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him" (Matthew 24:44, NIV). Readiness is not anxiety. Readiness is alignment with God's will. This is not the time to step back. This is the time to stand up. The clock may be close to midnight, but we still have a mission to fulfill. Christ is still Lord. And hope is still alive.
