I remember my first day at medical school. We were all given a few minutes to talk with the dean. The most memorable question he asked me was, “Why do you want to be a doctor, Chidi?” I replied, with all the enthusiasm of a first-year medic, “I want to cure people.” He looked over his glasses at me and said, “Chidi, we do not cure people; we treat people.” I remember feeling a little low after that interview. I even questioned whether medicine was right for me.
