Safety in Vigilance

November 8, 2025 By admin

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 1 Thessalonians 5:6.

I was shown Satan as he once was, a happy, exalted angel. Then I was shown him as he now is. He still bears a kingly form. His features are still noble, for he is an angel fallen. But the expression of his countenance is full of anxiety, care, unhappiness, malice, hate, mischief, deceit, and every evil. That brow which was once so noble, I particularly noticed. His forehead commenced from his eyes to recede. I saw that he had so long bent himself to evil that every good quality was debased, and every evil trait was developed. His eyes were cunning, sly, and showed great penetration. His frame was large, but the flesh hung loosely about his hands and face. As I beheld him, his chin was resting upon his left hand. He appeared to be in deep thought. A smile was upon his countenance, which made me tremble, it was so full of evil and satanic slyness. This smile is the one he wears just before he makes sure of his victim, and as he fastens the victim in his snare, this smile grows horrible.23Early Writings, 152, 153.

The people of God must be prepared to withstand the wily foe. It is this resistance that Satan dreads. He knows better than we do the limit of his power and how easily he can be overcome if we resist and face him. Through divine strength the weakest saint is more than a match for him and all his angels, and if brought to the test he [the weakest saint] would be able to prove his superior power. Therefore Satanโ€™s step is noiseless, his movements stealthy, and his batteries masked….

Man is Satanโ€™s captive and is naturally inclined to follow his suggestions and do his bidding. He has in himself no power to oppose effectual resistance to evil. It is only as Christ abides in him by living faith, influencing his desires and strengthening him with strength from above, that man may venture to face so terrible a foe. Every other means of defense is utterly vain.24Testimonies for the Church 5:293, 294.

Dear Friends,
I was thinking the other day about how long I have been retired—Twelve years. That brought back memories both bad and good—the coworkers with their idiosyncrasies, the interesting criminal cases, the defendants that sometimes could be difficult to deal with, my desk overflowing with paperwork, the cart they got me for the heavy files I had to take to various offices or pick them up from others. Oh, so many memories!
For about the first five years or so that I worked there, I had to carry great stacks of heavy files, affidavits, criminal histories, etc. As our workload increased, that became very difficult for me as we had much more than we had had before. Several people advised me to ask for a cart, so that I could do my work with ease. I resisted for quite a while, but eventually I got up the courage to ask for one. Seeing the need for it, our supervisor ordered the cart. Bev, who did the ordering, and I selected a cart from the catalog that was like the one that I had seen in another office. I had often wished for one just like it.
When the cart arrived, however, we were surprised at how small the box was. When we opened it, we found the reason. It was completely unassembled. As we looked at all of the parts, we realized that we needed help. However, we knew that if we waited for the maintenance men to put it together, it could be days before they came as they had many duties much more important than assembling a cart. Now that I had it, I really wanted to use it that day.
Thankfully, several of the men in our department volunteered to assemble it. As they looked at all of the parts, they knew that the first thing that they needed to do was look for the directions that had to be included somewhere in that box. Once those directions were found and followed exactly, those many pieces began to take the shape of a cart. Before long, it was completed and I could use it that very day. I was delighted!
Just as the manufacturer had included directions for assembling the cart, so our Great Creator has given us directions that will bring us health and happiness and keep us on the path that leads to our Heavenly Home. How important, then, it is for us to read and follow those directions. James urges us, “be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James 1:22-25
How important it is for us to be students of God’s Holy Word. How vital that we apply it to our life allowing it to transform us into a useful worker for the Master. As we hide God’s Word in our hearts, we become changed into His image. Paul tells us, “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Cor 3:18 As we read and heed the Scriptures, we are kept from falling into the snares of the evil one. The Psalmist David speaks of this. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.” Psa 119:9-12
As we meditate upon God’s Word, the Holy Spirit reveals so many gems of truth in each text; that it becomes an exciting experience. Jeremiah says, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.” Jer 15:16 David adds, “I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.” “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.” Psa 119:15,16; 19:7-11
May we โ€œstudy to show [ourselves] approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truthโ€ is my prayer. 2 Tim 2:15

Sunday: Covenant First

November 8, 2025 By admin

Daily Lesson for Sunday 9th of November 2025

Read Joshua 5:1-7. Why did the Lord command Joshua to circumcise the second generation of Israelites at this particular time of the conquest?

After the exploration of the country, the encouraging report of the spies, and the miraculous crossing over the Jordan, we would expect an immediate engagement with the enemy. However, there is something more important than the military conquest: Israelโ€™s covenant with God.

People Neglecting Bible Study

Image ยฉ Pacific Press at Goodsalt.com

Before the new generation could engage in taking the land, they needed to be fully aware of their special relationship with the Owner of the land. The renewal of the covenant sign comes as a response to Godโ€™s gracious and miraculous act of bringing Israel safely across the Jordan.

Our covenant with God should always be an answer of gratitude for what He has already accomplished for us, never an act of trying to obtain some benefit by legalistic conformity to His requirements. (This same concept, no doubt, was crucial to Paulโ€™s struggles with those who insisted that Gentile male converts be circumcised, as seen most clearly in his letter to the Galatians.)

Israel was on the verge of the greatest military campaign of its history, and we would expect the whole camp to be busy with war preparations. It was, but not in the conventional sense. Instead of harnessing the horses and sharpening the swords, they engaged in a ritual that left most of the fighting force vulnerable for at least three days.

They did this in order to celebrate their relationship with their God, who delivered them from Egypt. Why? Because they recognized that the battle belongs to the Lord. He is the One who grants them victory and success. Jesus formulated the same principle in slightly different words: โ€œ โ€˜But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to youโ€™ โ€ (Matthew 6:33, NKJV). Most of the time, everyday life seems to pressure us with the urgency of so many important things that we forget to give priority to the most important thing in our life: the daily renewal of our commitment to Christ.

Think about the times you have neglected time with God because of more โ€œimportantโ€ matters. Why is this so easy to do, and how can we fight against it?

Lessons of Faith from Joshua โ€“ Lesson 7.Supreme Loyalty: Worship in a War Zone | ๐Ÿ“˜ Sabbath School with Pastor Mark Finley

November 8, 2025 By admin

Series LESSONS OF FAITH FROM JOSHUAย with Pastor Mark Finley
Lesson 7 โ€“ Supreme Loyalty: Worship in a War Zone
God first โ€“ even in the face of the greatest challenges
Introduction
Lesson 7 places us right in the middle of Israelโ€™s critical moment: the conquest of the Promised Land. But before swords are drawn and cities are taken, worship, covenant renewal, and spiritual alignment come first. Joshua reminds the peopleโ€”and usโ€”that true victory begins in the heart, not on the battlefield. Godโ€™s presence, His Word, and the covenant are not just companions in battle, but the foundation of every spiritual advance. This lesson shows us that loyalty to God is not proven in retreat, but in the midst of conflict. Whoever puts God first will experience His guidance, even in the storm.
Content:
7.1 Covenant First
Spiritual preparation before battle: Loyalty begins with relationship
Before Israel could take Jericho, God insisted on the renewal of the covenant signโ€”a seemingly illogical step in enemy territory. Yet it was in that very moment that God reminded His people that true victory comes not through military strength, but through covenant faithfulness. Circumcision was not just a physical act, but a spiritual declaration: our first and best belongs to Godโ€”even in the midst of war. This event teaches us that loyalty to God must always come before strategic planning. We too are often pressured to act quicklyโ€”but the first step is to choose Godโ€™s guidance intentionally. Whoever seeks first the Kingdom of God will see how He provides the victory.
7.2 Passover
Remembrance before victory: Godโ€™s redemption as the foundation of faith
Before the battle for the Promised Land began, Joshua led the people in celebrating the Passoverโ€”an act of deep faith and obedience. The people remembered that the same God who had delivered them from Egypt was now leading them into the land. Amid strategic tension, Joshua ensured that Godโ€™s redemption remained the center. Passover was more than a ritualโ€”it was a testimony: the victory belongs to the Lord. Even today, God calls us to pause in the middle of our busyness and remember the cross. Whoever keeps the Lambโ€™s sacrifice in view can face lifeโ€™s โ€œbattlesโ€ with peace and confidence.
7.3 Altars of Renewal
Obedience carved in stone: Worship as a response to victory
Joshua didnโ€™t build the altar by personal initiative, but in obedience to a clear divine command. In the midst of military success, he reminded the people that spiritual faithfulness mattered more than triumph in battle. The altar on Mount Ebal was a public declaration of covenant with Godโ€”visible, tangible, and lasting. Next to the altar, Joshua had Godโ€™s law written on stones to continually remind the people of divine promises and responsibilities. This act connects victory with responsibility, and grace with obedience. Even today, our spiritual lives need โ€œaltarsโ€โ€”moments, places, or rituals that remind us of our dependence on God’s Word and grace.
7.4 Written on Stones
Eternal remembrance: Godโ€™s Word as the foundation of life
The engraved stones on Mount Ebal made God’s covenant visible, permanent, and accessible to all. In a world full of forgetfulness and distraction, this monument ensured that Godโ€™s words would not be lostโ€”neither spiritually nor literally. Positioned between the two mountains where blessings and curses were read aloud, it reminded Israel of the life-changing power of their decisions. These stones impressed daily upon the people: loyalty to God brings lifeโ€”turning away brings loss. Even today, we need spiritual โ€œstonesโ€โ€”firm reminders of Godโ€™s truth to guide us through the everyday. Scripture, community, and intentional remembrance help us not to lose sight of God in the busyness.
7.5 Longing for His Presence
Godโ€™s presence first: The sanctuary as the heart of life
Joshua interrupted the strategically important land distribution to establish the sanctuary at Shilohโ€”a powerful sign: worship comes before possession. The Tent of Meeting reminded Israel that their strength lay not in warfare but in Godโ€™s presence. The center of the people was to be the place where Godโ€™s glory dwelledโ€”a visible center for spiritual life. We too live in a โ€œland of opportunity,โ€ but true life flows only from a constant connection with Jesus, our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary. In a hectic world, God invites us to pause and realign our focus on Him. Only those who are centered on God can live victoriously and fulfilled in the long run.
7.6 Summary
Faithfulness in the tension between battle and worship
Lesson 7 shows that true loyalty to God is especially proven in the tension between challenge and decision. Before Israel took the land, circumcision, Passover, altar building, and the setting up of the sanctuary were all placed at the centerโ€”acts of worship and remembrance. These spiritual actions werenโ€™t interruptions to the conquest plan but the decisive key to victory. Joshuaโ€™s leadership makes it clear: the covenant with God, His presence, and His Word stand above any strategic or military agenda. We too are called to make space for God firstโ€”even in the everyday struggles and battles of life. True victory doesnโ€™t begin with the swordโ€”but with worship.
