5.1 Our Excuses: Fear
Jonah’s decision not to go to Nineveh was likely influenced by his fear of the cruel Assyrians and their city, Nineveh. The city was wealthy but also known for its wickedness and violence. The fear of this dangerous environment could have influenced Jonah’s decision to avoid following God’s instructions. This reminds us how often we are hindered by fears instead of trusting in God.
5.2 Our Excuses: False Views
Jonah’s flight and self-blame during the storm indicate that he was likely influenced by false beliefs. Back then, it was believed that the sea was the realm of demons and that sacrifices were necessary to appease them. However, through his adventures, Jonah learned that God is sovereign everywhere, and his perspective changed when he confessed his guilt and was saved. Similar to Jonah, we can also have misunderstandings about God’s expectations, such as the belief that success depends on us. However, our task is to collaborate with God and support His work, not to accomplish it alone.
5.3 Our Excuses: Inconvenience
Jonah’s experience in the belly of the fish demonstrated God’s love and mercy, but his old ways of thinking didn’t change immediately. Despite his reluctance, he preached in Nineveh, and the people repented. This reminds us that God’s mission is continued by those willing to make sacrifices and overcome prejudices. Mission requires humility, emotional energy, and financial sacrifices, but God’s work is powerful, even through imperfect messengers like Jonah.
5.4 Our Excuses: Uncomfortable Confrontations
Jonah had such deep hatred for Nineveh that he preferred death over allowing his worldview to be shaken by God’s grace. He wanted Nineveh to be destroyed, and when it didn’t happen, his worldview was shattered. God confronted Jonah with an experience that helped him recognize his distorted perspective and realign his priorities. This reminds us how easily we avoid unpleasant confrontations and question our preconceived notions about the significance of grace and mercy.
5.5 Here I Am, Send Me
Jonah’s story shows that our role is to be willing messengers of God, and ultimately, it is God who convicts and converts people’s hearts. It is a call to respond to God’s call, obey Him, and deliver His message of hope to those who desperately need it. Isaiah’s response to God’s call should inspire us to do the same and reach out to our fellow human beings with love and hope. Formularbeginn

Fleeing the War in Ukraine
At 5:00 that morning Nataliia Prylepa and her husband were awakened by the sounds of explosions. It was the 24th of February 2022, the day the war in Ukraine started. They looked out their 11th floor apartment window in Kyiv and witnessed the explosions. Feeling lost in their own home, Nataliia and her husband grabbed suitcases and packed them frantically. Nataliia Prylepa had to flee her home on the day the war began. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6QUjdQD8dA

No siempre me he sentido así. Esta sensación de hipervigilancia comenzó después de […] Source: https://atoday.org/que-nos-paso-en-la-iglesia/

Source: https://atoday.org/%d1%88%d0%b5%d1%81%d1%82%d1%8c-%d0%bf%d1%80%d0%b8%d1%87%d0%b8%d0%bd-%d0%bf%d0%be-%d0%ba%d0%be%d1%82%d0%be%d1%80%d1%8b%d0%bc-%d1%8f-%d0%b1%d0%be%d0%bb%d1%8c%d1%88%d0%b5-%d0%bd%d0%b5-%d0%b4%d0%be%d0%b2/
Sunday: Our Excuses: Fear
Daily Lesson for Sunday 29th of October 2023
Read Nahum 1:1; Nahum 3:1-4; and 2 Kings 17:5-6; 2 Kings 19:32-37. What do these verses reveal about Nineveh and the relationship between Assyria and Israel? How might this relationship have impacted Jonah’s decision to go to Tarshish instead?
One of the reasons Jonah may have been unwilling to go to Nineveh was fear. The Assyrians were a formidable foe, and Nineveh served as the capital of the kingdom.
“Among the cities of the ancient world in the days of divided Israel one of the greatest was Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian realm. . . . In the time of its temporal prosperity Nineveh was a center of crime and wickedness. Inspiration has characterized it as ‘the bloody city, . . . full of lies and robbery.’ In figurative language the prophet Nahum compared the Ninevites to a cruel, ravenous lion. ‘Upon whom,’ he inquired, ‘hath not thy wickedness passed continually?’ Nahum 3:1,19.”—Ellen G. White, Prophets and Kings, p. 265.
Nineveh was a magnificent city. Historians tell us that Sennacherib greatly expanded the city, including building the huge southwestern palace that alone measured 1,650 feet by 794 feet. (503 by 242 meters) and contained at least 80 rooms. He also built 18 canals to bring water to the city from as far away as 40 miles (65 kilometers). Its size alone would have been intimidating.
But the Assyrians were also ruthless. In his account of the conquest of Babylon, Sennacherib boasted that he filled the streets with the corpses of its inhabitants, young and old, and relief carvings found during excavations depict scenes of soldiers impaling victims. These were not people you wanted to cross; they were not averse to using violence, and gratuitously cruelly, too, against those they didn’t like. Indeed, at the thought of walking among the masses of people in Nineveh, Jonah must have quaked with fear.
In spite of all of this, we often read Jonah’s story with disapproval for letting fear get in the way of carrying out God’s instructions. What we fail to realize is that we can do the same thing (i.e., allow ourselves to be controlled by our fears rather than by God).

Think back to a time when you felt strongly that God was directing you to do something that you, out of fear, really didn’t want to do. What lessons have you learned from that experience?
