God’s Mission, My Mission – Lesson 4: Sharing God’s Mission | Sabbath School with Pastor Mark Finley

Series GOD’S MISSION, MY MISSION with Pastor Mark Finley  |
Lesson 4: Sharing God’s Mission  |
Memory Text: 1: John 13,34.35 – A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.  |
Content:  |
4.1 The Gift of Hospitality

Abraham’s hospitality, offered to travelers despite the scorching heat, illustrates his exceptional compassion and understanding of his mission to convey the presence of the Lord in a world dominated by paganism and idolatry. His proactive approach, initiating the encounter even before the strangers arrived, underscores his genuine concern for their well-being. Abraham’s readiness to provide rest, foot washing, and food highlights the essence of hospitality, while his unwavering dedication to his divine mission serves as an inspiring example of bringing blessings to others and fulfilling God’s call in our lives.
4.2 Abraham’s Love for Everyone
Abraham’s love for all people, regardless of their origin or affiliation, shines in Genesis 18. His compassion for the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, despite their sins and divergent lifestyles, demonstrates the universal nature of his love. This story reminds us that love and hope for repentance are essential values in our interactions with others, in harmony with Abraham’s example.
4.3 Abraham’s Spirit of Prayer
Abraham’s intercessory prayer for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah reveals the power and significance of prayer. His sincere love for the residents of these cities compelled him to pray for them, and his prayer was characterized by humility and persistence. This story teaches us that prayer is an integral part of our mission work, as it can touch people’s hearts and allow the Holy Spirit to work.
4.4 Abraham’s Mission
Abraham’s spirit of hospitality, love, and intercession had far-reaching consequences. Although Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, Lot and his two daughters were saved, in part due to Abraham’s prayer and God’s grace. This story reminds us that not everyone will be saved, but our mission is to invite as many as possible to choose Jesus while respecting the free will of each individual.
4.5 Submission to God’s Will
Abraham exhibited an outstanding quality by unconditionally submitting to God’s will. Despite uncertainty and unclear paths before him, he obeyed God’s call, left his land, followed divine guidance, and even accepted difficult decisions such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. His obedience and submission to God’s will serve as an inspiring example for us to trust God in all circumstances and unreservedly submit to His guidance.

Lesson 4 Sharing God’s Mission – 4.1 The Gift of Hospitality

October 21, 2023 By admin

Abraham demonstrates impressive hospitality in this Bible passage, illustrating many important elements of this virtue. Here are some aspects of his hospitality:
  1. Initiative: Abraham took the initiative to welcome the guests even before they arrived at his tent. This shows his willingness to embrace strangers and care for their well-being without waiting for an invitation.
  2. Politeness and Respect: He spoke politely to the travelers, addressing them as “my lords.” This respectful address demonstrates courtesy and reverence for his guests.
  3. Caring: Abraham offered the guests water to wash their feet, a refreshing gesture of hospitality in a dusty and hot environment. He invited them to sit under the tree for shade and rest.
  4. Feeding: He provided them with bread to refresh their hearts, indicating that hospitality not only fulfills physical needs but also aims to promote the guests’ well-being.
  5. Generosity: Abraham was willing to go beyond the basics by offering more than just water and bread, exemplifying comprehensive hospitality.
  6. Awareness of His Mission: This commentary also highlights that Abraham was aware of his missionary role. He saw an opportunity to convey the relationship with God and faith in Yahweh through hospitality. This shows that hospitality for Abraham was not just a social virtue but also a means to spread faith and fulfill his mission.
Overall, Abraham’s behavior in this Bible passage demonstrates how hospitality can be considered a noble virtue that fulfills both physical and spiritual needs and provides an opportunity to effect positive change in the world.

4: Sharing God’s Mission – Singing with Inspiration

October 21, 2023 By admin

“God’s Mission – My Mission” consistently points us to our Gracious God and how He wishes us to portray what He has done for us. In response we will reach out to others:
Hymn 573 – I’ll Go Where You Want Me To Go, Dear Lord, hence our theme hymn. This is in response to
So Send I You – Hymn 573.

Our Memory Text instructs us to love one another.
Love Consecrates The Humblest Act – Hymn 406 and comes from us learning that
Jesus, Lover Of My Soul – Hymn 489/490.

Abraham was
Sent Forth By God’s Blessing – Hymn 407 so as to give
Showers of Blessing – Hymn 195 to all he met and lived amongst.

The story of Abraham continues showing
O Love of God Most Full – Hymn 77 moving our minds to see
O Love of God, How Strong And True – Hymn 79.

Prayer was a very large part of the life of Abraham, with all the family, friends and neighbours for whom he was praying:
For You I Am Praying – Hymn 284. We learn in our lesson study to pray more and more requesting
Come, Holy Spirit – Hymn 269.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah increases our faith knowing that
Jesus Saves – Hymn 340.

Just as Abraham was called so long ago, today
Jesus Calls Us – Hymn 285. Submitting to God’s will gives us the
Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine – Hymn 462 (especially in verses 2 and 3).

Ellen White encourages us on Friday, that we too can
Come, Ye Sinners – Hymn 280 all because
Jesus, What A Friend Of Sinners – Hymn 187, knowing that I am
Chief Of Sinners – Hymn 295.

So, dear people, be encouraged to go forward so that we and all our friends and neighbors will be rejoicing
When We All Get To Heaven – Hymn 633.

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org/Search and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

A Special Message from Pastor Ted Wilson: Mission Refocus

October 21, 2023 By admin

Pastor Ted Wilson, president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, shares a special message this week about the importance of ‘Mission Refocus’ as a global organization and local churches, communities, and families. As Seventh-day Adventists, we are called to a special mission for God in these last days of Earth’s history. We are Chosen for Mission to proclaim the Three Angels’ Messages, a mission that will be accomplished through the Holy Spirit despite current and future attacks. Mission Refocus is more than a Strategic Plan for the Adventist Church, it is a missional lifestyle for members, leaders, and communities. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hDQd3-y5Jw

The Promise of the Holy Spirit: “Ye Shall Receive Power”

October 21, 2023 By admin

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8.
After His resurrection, Christ ascended to His appointed honor. Before the heavenly universe and the worlds unfallen He was to be enthroned. The Father would impress the minds of the believers with the glorious reception of His Son in the home He had left. For our sake He became poor, that we through His poverty might be made rich….
As Christ ascended, His hands were outstretched in blessing upon His disciples. While they stood gazing upward to catch the last glimpse of their ascending Lord, He was received by the heavenly throng into the rejoicing ranks of cherubs and seraphs. And as they escorted Him to His heavenly home, they sang in triumph, “Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; … that rideth upon the heavens of heavens.”
Christ determined to bestow a gift on those who had been with Him and on those who should believe on Him, because this was the occasion of His ascension and inauguration, a jubilee in heaven. What gift could Christ bestow rich enough to signalize and grace His ascension to the mediatorial throne? It must be worthy of His greatness and His royalty. Christ gave His representative, the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. This Gift could not be excelled….
On the day of Pentecost Christ gave His disciples the Holy Spirit as their Comforter. It was ever to abide with His church. During the whole Jewish economy the influence of this Spirit had often been revealed in a marked manner, but not in full. The Spirit had been waiting for the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Christ. For ages prayers had been offered for the fulfillment of the promise, for the impartation of the Spirit; and not one of these earnest supplications had been forgotten. Now for ten days the disciples sent up their petitions, and Christ in heaven added His intercession. He claimed the gift of the Spirit, that He might pour it out upon His people…. [Christ] having reached His throne, the Spirit was given as He had promised, and like a rushing, mighty wind, it fell upon those assembled, filling the whole house. It came with a fullness and power, as if for ages it had been restrained, but was now poured forth upon the church, to be communicated to the world. What followed this outpouring? Thousands were converted in a day.—Manuscript 44, 1898.

Prayer Requests

—-Lift my daughter Sancia and my Nephew Shem and Seth in prayers as they are going to sit for their final Exams this end month. EN
—-Please pray for a friend of Emma’s step-dad who is in ICU. Also please pray for Mike as he has a very important doctor’s appointment this week. Rose
—-I am requesting prayers for the mother-in-law of a dear friend’s son. She needs a kidney transplant desperately and my friend’s son was found to be a perfect match. Now just days before the surgery, the test on my friend’s son came back negative and they don’t know what to do. They’ve had to postpone the transplant surgery. Needless to say, everyone is reeling right now. I’m praying for God to carry them through this. Kathy

Dear Friends,
When we moved to Washington state, the church that we attended often had social functions where the members could bond and become like a family. Sometimes we would go to a campground for the weekend or out to a lake for the day. Some of the church members who had really nice houses invited the members and their friends to a picnic.
Over the years, Esther often reminisced about the first picnic that we attended there. It left quite an impression on her six year old mind. Jerry and Judy had opened their home for a church get-together. That year there had been a lot of rain and behind their house it was flooded because the creek had risen too high. They had a campfire and picnic table on the bluff in the front yard, so they did not have to cancel the church social.
Of course, the adults sat around the campfire talking while the children took turns paddling around in the shallow water in a canoe. Esther and her friend, Gene, begged to have a turn. Against my better judgment, I said yes. As I watched them having so much fun, I wondered why I had been hesitant to allow my little girl to get into the canoe. About that time, the canoe somehow tipped over. The water was not deep, but they got really wet. As the children waded to higher ground, Esther was very distressed because she lost one of her pink patent leather shoes in the mud. Those shoes were her favorites. She only had two pair of shoes (one pair for church and one for everyday), so she really needed those shoes. She began to cry.
Gene’s father rescued them out of the water and mud, wrapped them in a blanket and held them on his lap. To quiet the whimpering child, he told her, “Don’t cry, your shoe will grow a pink shoe tree, and then you will have all of the pink shoes you every wanted.” That thought dried her tears. She believed him.
For several years Esther would go out into Jerry’s backyard looking for a pink shoe tree to poke its head out of the ground. As she matured, she realized the impossibility of such a thing and realized that he was only trying to make her feel better.
How careful we must be in what we tell little children. They have perfect trust, perfect confidence in us. They believe what we say. They watch what we do. They model our words and actions. As a twig that is bent when young and pliable grows in that particular shape, so little children become what we teach them by precept and example.
Our Dear Saviour used a little child to teach the disciples an important lesson. “At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matt 18:1-4 Jesus wants us to have the same perfect trust and confidence in Him as does a little child in his parents. He desires us to believe His promises with our whole heart. “Without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Heb 11:6
May we have the confidence of a little child in our Loving Heavenly Father. May we love and trust Him with our whole heart. May we be careful what we teach our little ones for He warns, “whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. . . . Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” Matt 18:6, 10
