ATSS: Tom de Bruin, “Extra-canonical Books and the Bible”

13 December 2022 | Think about this for a moment: Satan is hardly mentioned in the Old Testament—just three times—and is present almost everywhere in the New Testament. Where does that emphasis on Satan come from? The Old Testament is silent about an afterlife: the dead know nothing, feel nothing, experience nothing. The New Testament […] Source: https://atoday.org/atss-tom-de-bruin-extra-canonical-books-and-the-bible/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=atss-tom-de-bruin-extra-canonical-books-and-the-bible
Wednesday: The Guidance of the Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God’s powerful Agent who pours out the love of God into our hearts (Romans 5:5), leads us into a true saving experience (John 16:7-11), guides us into all the truth (John 16:13), and empowers us to fulfill the gospel mission (Acts 1:8). Because it is the Holy Spirit who counteracts the degenerating work of Satan, it is no surprise that Satan tries by all means to distort our understanding of the nature and work of the Holy Spirit. While some deny His personality, others emphasize the gifts of the Spirit over His transforming power.
Read Acts 8:4-24. Simon the sorcerer of Samaria wanted to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit without being regenerated by the Spirit. How is this very same attitude still being manifested in our day?
The children of God are those who are being guided by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14) into all the truth of God’s word (John 16:13, John 17:17). Jesus warned in clear terms, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” (Matthew 7:21-23, NIV). This means that the Holy Spirit never guides anyone away from God’s Word — which He Himself inspired — but rather always leads us into conformity to that Word.
The same Holy Spirit that guides us into all the truth also empowers us in leading others into that wonderful truth (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8). While fulfilling our sacred mission, we have His special assistance. So, morning by morning, we must kneel before the Lord and renew our vows of consecration to Him. If we do this, He will grant us the presence of His Spirit, with His reviving, sanctifying power.
We must, however, be open to His leading by making conscious choices, every day, to do what we know is right and avoid what we know is wrong. That is, only by seeking, in our God-given strength, to live as we should, will we be open to receiving that power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, which God promises us.
| Why is it so important, morning after morning, to pray ourselves into an openness to the Holy Spirit’s leading in our lives? |

12: The Biblical Worldview – Singing with Inspiration
The theme hymn for this quarter’s studies “On Death, Dying and the FUTURE HOPE” is
Hymn 214 – We Have This Hope.
The studies we have completed so far are reverberating in
Hymn 203 – This Is The Threefold Truth and will do through to the end of this quarter.
Contrary to the worldwide view of the Bible, we ask
Give Me The Bible – Hymn 272. Sabbath afternoon concludes with encouraging us “to be guided by the Holy Spirit with the purpose of being ready for Christ’s glorious appearing:
Hymn 269 – Come, Holy Spirit.
Sunday gives us many pointers on how we may be like Jesus, our Model:
Hymn 310 – I Would Draw Nearer to Jesus so
I Would Be Like Jesus – Hymn 311 and Hymn 492 – Like Jesus. We may then be able to sing
We Praise Thee With Our Minds – Hymn 642 to complete Sunday’s study time.
The last statement on Monday tells us “we should trust in God”:
Hymn 510 – If You But Trust in God to Guide You.
Once again we may sing
Hymn 311 – I Would Be Like Jesus (Tuesday). It is that
Faith Is The Victory – Hymn 608 and
All To Jesus I Surrender – Hymn 309 that we may work towards seeing The Mind of Christ.
To have The Guidance of the Spirit, we may sing heartily and yet prayerfully
Hymn 269 – Come, Holy Spirit or
Hymn 672 – Spirit Of The Living God as we ask daily for this guidance.
Lead Me Lord – Hymn 691, please.
As ‘Tis Almost Time For the Lord To Come – Hymn 212, I want to be ready for the breaking of the day (verse 4). We are to be “pressing on ahead in faith” (Thursday) as is in
Hymn 625 – Higher Ground (verse 1).
On Friday, Ellen G White says “The Lord is coming” as does
Hymn 200 – The Lord Is Coming. Further down in the reading of the day, we are then encouraged to be cheerful as we wait for Jesus to come:
Hymn 440 – How Cheering Is The Christian’s Hope and
Hymn 494 – We Would See Jesus because
In A Little While We’re Going Home – Hymn 626.
Today we look forward to Jesus coming again. Oh, what a day that will be
When We All Get To Heaven – Hymn 633 because
That Glorious Day Is Coming – Hymn 209.
To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/
Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
