Key Thought: This lesson highlights the role of truth, our free will, and perseverance in overwhelming difficulties and challenges in our lives.
August 6, 2022
1. Have a volunteer read Colossians 1:28,29.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- In what ways does Paul show the human effort involved in working with God?
- Personal Application: What things has God laid on your heart that you are struggling with? Share your thoughts..

- Case Study: One of your relatives states, “Every culture has some distinctions that can break down our Christian experience. What things in your culture can leave you more vulnerable to Satan’s attacks?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Matthew 5:29.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- Would you call these words by Jesus radical? Why so?
- Personal Application: What were Jesus’ own feelings and desires in Gethsemane? Were they opposed to God’s will? What are we to learn from this? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “Is God literally calling us to maim ourselves or harm our bodies to control our sinful behavior? This doesn’t make sense to me.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Genesis 32:9-11..
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What does this story tell us about perseverance, even amid great discouragement?
- Personal Application: What are some practical choices you can make that will help you persevere with the Lord during discouragement and temptation? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “I am at the stage where I am ready to give up or already have given up. I am at the end of my rope. I can’t handle my situation anymore, and I see no help or relief in sight. God has turned His face away from me and I have no hope.” How would you respond to your relative?

- What does the Holy Spirit do for us?
- Personal Application: How well are you at listening to the Holy Spirit’s voice? What choices are you making with your free will? Share your thoughts.
