13: Israel in Egypt – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: Even though Israel living in Egypt contrasts with the hope of the promised land, Joseph points to another place where God will bring them to the land sworn to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

13: Israel in Egypt – Singing with Inspiration
The book of Genesis offers us so many vast topics from which to choose a theme hymn. As we are starting at the very beginning, I would like to give praise to our Creator of heaven and earth in singing
Hymn 320 – Lord of Creation and
Hymn 2 – All Creatures of Our God and King. The stories that follow creation will lean back toward our amazing God and what He has done for each of us in creation.
Once again it is hard to believe that a whole quarter of studies has rushed by and we are at the end of the lesson pamphlet.
It is beautiful to see that Jacob is able to be with Joseph once more, and in the story of this week, Jacob gives blessings to so many people. These blessings give us
Hymn 195 – There Shall Be Showers of Blessings. As the Sabbath afternoon introduction concludes, there is the great hope of the Promised Land just as there is in
Hymn 620 – On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand.
Sunday’s study finished with a poignant question which is reflected in
Hymn 202 – Tell It To Every Kindred and Nation showing
The Wonders of Redeeming Love – Hymn 179 which shows “God’s plan to bring redemption”.
The story continues with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday bringing the word ‘hope’ to the fore:
Hymn 214 – We Have This Hope. Wednesday reminds us in Phil. 2:10 that
At the Name of Jesus – Hymn 232 every knee should bow”.
Thursday re-iterates the Hope of the Promised Land as does
Hymn 620 – On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand.
God’s abundant blessings as we now complete the study through the first book of the Bible which our gracious God has given. May we be faithful and all say “Come, Lord Jesus, come – very soon” so we are able to go to our new home in Heaven, as
We Have This Hope – Hymn 214.
To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/
Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing, but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

2022 General Conference Session Ends With Emphasis on Biblical Mission; and other world news
First, in the news: The 2022 General Conference Session in Saint Louis ends on June 11, 2022. President Ted N. C. Wilson, in his ending message, put an emphasis on biblical principles and the mission of the church. He urged everyone to “be involved and go to preach the gospel into all the world.” The Communication Department of the General Conference has implemented the largest global task force in its history. Composed of 4 different teams working together in different parts and timezones of the world, the team succeeded in reaching its goal of transmitting and producing news for the biggest event of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in four languages. Hope Channel International has published a Bible trivia game, Heroes 2. The goal is to teach, especially the young people, the biblical truths and lead people to Christ and baptism. Monday: Jacob Settles in Egypt
It’s very interesting how, despite all that Jacob had been told about Joseph’s being alive in Egypt, the Lord still gave him “visions of the night” (Genesis 46:2) and in them commanded him to leave. Jacob leaves the Land of Promise for, of all places, Egypt — which later becomes associated with the one place that God’s people do not want to go (Deuteronomy 17:16).
Read Genesis 47:1-31. What spiritual truths and principles can we find in this account?
“Joseph took five of his brothers to present to Pharaoh and receive from him the grant of land for their future home. Gratitude to his prime minister would have led the monarch to honor them with appointments to offices of state; but Joseph, true to the worship of Jehovah, sought to save his brothers from the temptations to which they would be exposed at a heathen court; therefore he counseled them, when questioned by the king, to tell him frankly their occupation. The sons of Jacob followed this counsel, being careful also to state that they had come to sojourn in the land, not to become permanent dwellers there, thus reserving the right to depart if they chose. The king assigned them a home, as offered, in ‘the best of the land,’ the country of Goshen.” — Ellen G. White, Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 233.
Wisely, too, Pharaoh does not encourage these sojourners to become beggars, living off the largess of their host. He enquires about their “occupation” (Genesis 47:3, NKJV) in order that they may adjust better in their new environment. He is also eager to use their expertise, and even suggests that they serve him as “chief herdsmen over [his] livestock” (Genesis 47:6, NKJV).
Then, although Jacob, the foreigner, is the inferior, the stranger, he stands before the leader of the land, and, as the text says, “Jacob blessed Pharaoh” (Genesis 47:7). He, the lowly stranger, is the one who blesses Pharaoh, the ruler of mighty Egypt? Why should that be?
The verb ‘amad lifney, “set … before” (Genesis 47:7), is normally used in priestly contexts (Leviticus 14:11). Considering that in ancient Egypt the pharaoh had the status of the highest priest, this means that, in a spiritual sense, Jacob stands higher than the highest priest of Egypt, higher even than Pharaoh himself.
|
Whatever our station in life, what should it mean to us, in how we treat others, that we are “a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people” (1 Peter 2:9)? What obligations does our faith put on us? |
