Pathfinders [How Should Church Leaders Help Them?] – Pastor Ted Wilson
This Sabbath, September 18, we’re celebrating World Pathfinder Day. The Pathfinder Club began in 1950. For 71 years now, it has provided physical, mental, social, and spiritual training to young people through various programs and activities. With this, it has produced 1.5 million Pathfinders and 40,000 clubs across more than 150 countries globally. As such, Pastor Ted Wilson would like to congratulate our young people for their dedication to this ministry! Also, he would like to commend you, parents and leaders, for actively guiding and nurturing them. Through your training, the Pathfinders learn to follow Jesus' footsteps. Children and youth are under your care, dear leaders. They look up to you as their role models. Hence, you must maintain high moral principles, love for God and His Word, and a positive atmosphere in your Pathfinder clubs. Also, encourage them to discover their God-given talents and use them for His glory. By doing so, you make an impact for eternity. Christian Service, p. 30, says, "We have an army of youth today who can do much if they are properly directed and encouraged. We want our children to believe the truth. We want them to be blessed of God. We want them to act a part in well-organized plans for helping other youth. Let all be so trained that they may rightly represent the truth, giving the reason of the hope that is within them, and honoring God in any branch of the work where they are qualified to labor." Our Pathfinders are special to God and the church. They are loved and appreciated. Also, their positive influence is needed. More importantly, they are never too young to follow God's leading. Called "pathfinders," they have to find the right path God has given them. As Psalm 119:105 says, God's Word is the lamp to their feet and the light to their course. May God bless our Pathfinders! A Tribute to Joyce Griffith
Many of you will remember the Sabbath School Net “Discussion Starters” produced by Joyce Griffith. I was saddened to learn that Joyce passed away yesterday. Joyce had worked for various church departments, including the Voice of Prophecy. She had also been a missionary to Africa for about 5 years.
I never met Joyce in person. We become good friends through our work on Sabbath School Net. During her retirement, she wrote her Discussion Starters each week and I was given the task of checking and publishing them. She was a good editor and I don’t think I ever had to correct anything she had written. As time went on, she could no longer manage the internet editing facilities but would email her notes to me. I have just checked and found that over the last 4 years we exchanged over 1200 emails. Mostly they were her Discussion Starters, but always they included chats and little interludes about her personal life.
Sadly in 2020, I recognised that Joyce’s health was failing and she was becoming confused. She had an accident and broke her hip and could no longer use her computer. Her brother Dave used to ferry messages between us for a while, but she eventually had to be put into a care facility.
Joyce had a very perceptive mind and never took the status quo for granted. We often exchanged notes about the SSNET discussion and ways to challenge our readers’ thinking.
Joyce had a strong faith and I am sure that we will meet again in heaven and be able to continue our discussions face to face.
Thank you Joyce for your friendship and contribution to SSNET over the years. I miss you not only as a contributor but as a friend.
