8: Jesus, Mediator of the New Covenant โ€“ Teaching Plan

February 13, 2022 By admin

Key Thought: Jesus save us because of His perfect obedience, and through His death cancelled the penalty of death, and made possible the new covenant.
February 19, 2022

1. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 8:10-12.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. What is the nature of the new covenant?
  3. Personal Application: How do we look at the new covenant and our responsibility in being a part of it? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, โ€œI would never kill an animal and slit its throat. I wouldnโ€™t do that. Iโ€™m glad Iโ€™m under the new covenant and donโ€™t have to worry about killing an animal if I sin because the law and sacrifices have been done away with.โ€ How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 8:1-6.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. Why is Jesus a better mediator of the covenant?
  3. Personal Application: How often is your prayers for Christโ€™s intercession for you and others? How important is it? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, โ€œIf Jesus is our High Priest, what is the role of the priestsโ€™ in the church today that offer Christโ€™s blood and body to the members every week?โ€ How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 10:5-10.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
  2. What is the difference between Christโ€™s sacrifice for us and the Lordโ€™s Supper?
  3. Personal Application: What is the role of obedience in our lives and why is it so important? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states: โ€œIf Jesusโ€™ sacrifice of His body was once for all, why is the Mass celebrated offering the body and blood of Christ every day?โ€ How would you respond to your relative?

4. Have a volunteer read Jeremiah 31:33,34.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What does it mean that they wonโ€™t teach others to know the Lord? Does that mean we wonโ€™t have teachers and education in heaven?
  3. Personal Application: If this covenant was for the house of Israel, why is it repeated twice in Hebrews in the New Testament? Is this covenant different from the covenant with the Gentile Christian believers? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this weekโ€™s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.โ€Ministry of Healing, p. 148).

Amen!(0)

8: Jesus, The Mediator of the New Covenant โ€“ Singing with Inspiration

February 13, 2022 By admin

The titles of the thirteen Sabbaths of study this quarter give us two hymns to use as the themes:
Hymn 593 โ€“ In Times Like Theseย andย
Hymn 177 โ€“ Jesus, Your Blood and Righteousness.

The better promises given to us in the Memory Text will have usย
Standing on the Promises โ€“ Hymn 518.

God is making a covenant with us inย
Hymn 347 โ€“ Built On the Rockย (verse 4) and Godโ€™s covenant supports us inย
Hymn 522 โ€“ My Hope Is Built on Nothing Lessย (verse 3). Sunday continues on with Romans 10:4 encouraging us to believe โ€“ย
Hymn 511 โ€“ I Know Whom I Have Believedย andย
Hymn 486 โ€“ I Do Believe

Renewed on Monday, we can ask God to help with this โ€“ย

Jesus perfect sacrifice for us is shown in:

We see the great faithfulness God has toward us and He would have loved to have had from Israel:ย
Hymn 100 โ€“ Great Is Thy Faithfulness. Their obedience is what God desired as โ€œan expression of gratitude,โ€ย  just as we can give:ย
Hymn 285 โ€“ Jesus Calls Usย (verse 4) andย
Hymn 320 โ€“ Lord of Creationย (verse 2).

It is with gratefulness that we may singย
Hymn 79 โ€“ O Love of God, How Strong and True!

We are bound for The Promised Land! Hallelujah!! โ€“ย
Hymn 620 โ€“ On Jordanโ€™s Stormy Banks. Come, Lord Jesus, come โ€“ very soon.

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at:ย https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Anotherย great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing,ย but canโ€™t find it in your hymnal. Go toย https://www.sdahymnal.org and in the search bar type in a special word that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV –ย โ€œStudy to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.โ€

Listen to What You Listen To | February 13, 2022

February 13, 2022 By admin

We live in a world where accuracy in statements is not needed. In fact, we are beginning to prefer exaggerated and misleading statements if it supports our view, which is extremely dangerous! And this can lead down a rabbit hole of training our minds to only seek information we agree with or that is conspiratorial, controversial, or viral. We have to be sure that we are careful to listen to what we listen to! Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8GdM64I4f8

Christian Service, ch. 4 | Believe His Prophets | Weekly Spirit of Prophecy Reading Guide ๐Ÿ•Š

February 13, 2022 By admin

Commentary by Luis Iván Martínez Toledo:
"Omicron is not the first threat we have dealt with, as we all know, and won’t be the last. Pandemics, catastrophes and wars have always been with us; and as we draw closer to the end of time, calamities in nature, society, and the human heart will increase.
Since the fall, the earth has been physically and spiritually under the influence of sin. What is the difference between the past and the things about to come? If we look carefully at the prophecy, we realize that deceitfulness is the core of society's last condition. In the past people knew that evil is evil, but gradually they are becoming accustomed to it until it becomes not only acceptable, but normal.
It happens also in religion and faith. “Satan is devising many plans to occupy minds, and to divert attention from the truths essential to salvation.”
In times like this, where are our eyes fixed? On the signs of the times to see how things are becoming worse? On the acts of Satan’s minions?
Soon humanity will look at us to see if our lives are different because our eyes are fixed on truth and the world to come. But the test will not be just our outward ethical behavior, but rather on the place the Lord of the Bible has in our lives.
“God has many thousands who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” Are we among them?" Luis Iván Martínez Toledo

Monday: New and Renewed

February 13, 2022 By admin

Compareย Hebrews 8:10-12ย withย Deuteronomy 6:4-6,ย Deuteronomy 30:11-14, andย Jeremiah 31:31-34. What does this teach us about the nature of the new covenant?
Covenant with the Lord

Image ยฉ Lars Justinen from GoodSalt.com

The promise of a new covenant in Hebrews refers back to Jeremiah. According to Jeremiah, Godโ€™s promise of a new covenant was, in fact, a renewal of the covenant that He had first made with Israel through Mosesย (Jeremiah 31:31-34). It could be argued, then, that Jeremiah 31 was not strictly speaking of a โ€œnewโ€ covenant but of a โ€œrenewalโ€ of the original covenant with Israel. In fact, the Hebrew word for new,ย hadashah, can have both the sense of โ€œrenewโ€ and โ€œbrand new.โ€

The issue with the old covenant was that the people broke itย (Hebrews 8:8-9). The covenant was not faulty; the people were. If Israel had seen through the symbols to the coming Messiah and put their faith in Him, the covenant would not have been broken. Yet, to be fair, there were many believers throughout Israelite history in whom the purposes of the covenant were fulfilled and who had the law in their heartsย (Psalm 37:31,ย Psalm 40:8,ย Psalm 119:11,ย Isaiah 51:7).

While the new covenant is a renewal of the old covenant, there is a sense in which it is, indeed, new. Jeremiahโ€™s promise of a โ€œnew covenantโ€ did not simply envision a renewal of the conditions that existed before the exile, which had been broken and renewed several times because the nation had lapsed several times into apostasy. And thatโ€™s because the people were simply unwilling to keep up their end of the covenant with Godย (Jeremiah 13:23).

Thus, God promised to do a โ€œnew thingโ€ย (Jeremiah 31:22). The covenant would not be like the covenant that God had made โ€œwith their fathersโ€ย (Jeremiah 31:32). Because of the unfaithfulness of the people, the promises that God made under the Mosaic covenant were never fulfilled. Now, in virtue of the guarantee given by the Sonย (Hebrews 7:22), God would fulfill the purposes of His covenant. God did not change His law or lower His standards; instead, He sent His Son as a guarantee of the covenant promisesย (Hebrews 7:22,ย Hebrews 6:18-20). This is why this covenant does not have curses. It has only blessings because Jesus fulfilled it perfectly, becoming a curse for usย (Galatians 3:13).

Readย 2 Timothy 2:13. What can we learn from Godโ€™s faithfulness to His people and to His plans as we consider our relationships with others and our plans?

Amen!(0)

Commentary by Lori Engel:
"I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you!” Spoken by God, that message surely encouraged Jacob’s troubled heart, worn out from years of overwork and emotional manipulation. How reassuring! Jacob didn’t have to fight his battles alone; God was fighting for him. Have you been deceived and mistreated by someone for years? Imagine how comforting it would be if God told you directly, “I have seen all that So-and-So is doing to you.” It’s absolutely true. Nothing escapes God’s notice: no insult, no deception, no abuse, no betrayal – absolutely nothing is too trivial for Him. Nothing escapes His sovereign scrutiny. God cares how other people treat you, the apple of His eye! You may have modern-day Labans making your life miserable today, but more importantly, you have a God who sees all that is being done to you. Trust that God will bring good out of evil, just as He did for Jacob. All things work together for our good – eventually! God specializes in turning curses into blessings. Your modern-day “Laban” may have plotted against you, but God is plotting your course. God is fighting for you. If God be for you, who can be against you?"
