"The last chapter of Genesis opens with Joseph grieving over the death of his father Jacob, the third of the great patriarchs of the book. It is a chapter of great pain and sorrow personally for Joseph who had been separated from his father for so long. Both he and Jacob suffered during those years; in death Joseph weeps over his father’s face and kisses his lifeless yet warm body. In love and respect, Joseph has Jacob embalmed according to Egyptian tradition. Following the dignified burial of Jacob in Canaan’s ancestral burial grounds, we find Joseph’s brothers concerned that Joseph will finally take revenge on them. Humble and forgiving, Joseph repeats the words that he spoke earlier “you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good” . . . The kindness in Joseph’s demeanor reminds us of the forgiveness of Christ. The chapter’s ending with the death of Joseph compares starkly to the Creation story of Genesis 1.
