The Hidden Sin of Nostalgia
by Vinnie MacIsaac This time of year, everyone says they want to start new. Everyone says they want to start over. Everyone talks about the start of the year being a time for change. The problem is, most people are lying to themselves about all three of these statements. The truth is more like this: […] Source: https://atoday.org/the-hidden-sin-of-nostalgia/
Adventist Church Starts Global 10 Days of Prayer Campaign; and other world news
This week on ANN. ANN sat down with Dr. Katia Reinert to discuss maintaining a healthy lifestyle during the new year and the Youth Alive Ministry. Every Adventist member has been praying that this year would be different than last, that COVID would end, and we would be able to see our family and friends again safely. While many restrictions have eased, COVID-19 still looms over almost everyone, and everyone faces another year of uncertainty. Even uncertainty prevails, God is ultimately in control, and His deep love, mercy, and grace are with His children always. Adventist Church’s prayer initiative 10 Days of Prayer will happen from January 5-15. 10 Days of Prayer is the time when Seventh-day Adventists from all over the world come together to pray corporately. ANN sat down with Jonathan Walter, communication manager for the Ministerial Association, to talk about the Adventist Church’s Believe His Prophets Bible reading program and the theme of “The Three Angels Call to Prayer.” March 19 is Global Youth Day. Global Youth Day is when young people from all over the world take the time to “Be the Sermon” in their communities. This year’s theme is “Loving the Forgotten.” The Youth Department sends this report. Adventist Church will be having its 10 Days of Prayer from January 5-15. The Church will finish its Believe His Prophets reading plan on January 13, and it will start again on January 14. More information can be found at revivalandreformation.org. On January 18, the Adventist Church will hold a special General Conference Session, with just one agenda item—to allow GC Session to be held online, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions which could impact GC Session this June in St. Louis. Also, the Children’s Virtual Global Conference will be held on January 27 and 28. On April 12 and 13, the Adventist Church executive committee will hold its annual Spring Meetings. And finally, from June 6 through 11, the Seventh-day Adventist World Church will have its General Conference Session. The meetings will be held in St. Louis, Missouri. Most people make a few New Year’s resolutionsーthey want to renew their relationship with God, continue their relationships with others, and get healthy. ANN talked to Dr. Katia Reinert, Associate Director of Health Ministries for the World Church, about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the mental health initiative for young people, Youth Alive. Sabbath: The Message of Hebrews
Image © Pacific Press
Sabbath Afternoon,
Read for This Week’s Study:
Memory Text: “This is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens” (Hebrews 8:1, NKJV).
Jewish document written a few decades after Hebrews, around 100 A.D., contains a prayer: “All this I have spoken before you, O Lord, because you have said that it was for us that you created this world. … And now, O Lord, behold, these nations, which are reputed as nothing, domineer over us and devour us. But we your people, whom you have called your first-born, only begotten, zealous for you, and most dear, have been given into their hands.” — James H. Charlesworth, ed., The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, vol. 1, [New York: Hendrickson Publishers, 1983], p. 536.
The readers of Hebrews probably felt something similar. If they were God’s children, why were they going through such suffering?
Thus, Paul wrote Hebrews to strengthen the faith of the believers amid their trials. He reminded them (and us) that the promises of God will be fulfilled through Jesus, who is seated at the right hand of the Father, and who will soon take us home. In the meantime, Jesus mediates the Father’s blessings to us. So, we need to hold fast to our faith until the end.
Study this week’s lesson to prepare for Sabbath, January 8.
