Monday: Paulโs Prayer Requests
Daily Lesson for Monday 5th of January 2026
Some years ago, there was a pastor who talked about prayers that revolve around me, me, me, and my needs or desires. He aptly characterized them as โselfish little prayers,โ because God has bigger things in mind.
Read Paulโs prayer in Philippians 1:9-11. What is its focus, and what big requests does he make? What does it tell you about prayer?
This prayer is only forty-three words in Greek, but it encapsulates all of Paulโs concerns, which he will expand on in the rest of the epistle: love, knowledge, discernment, being sincere, not causing offense, and the righteousness we have through Jesus Christ. Underlying this prayer, as well as Paulโs previous expressions of thanksgiving, is an emphasis on the church as a whole. Paulโs prayer is completely others-focused, on behalf of the whole church and for its well-being. Letโs look more closely at some of the individual elements of the prayer:
Love to abound more and more. Paul doesnโt just pray for more love but for love guided in a specific direction: โin knowledge and all discernmentโ (Philippians 1:9, NKJV). The reference to knowledge is not to merely intellectual knowledge but implies a knowledge of spiritual things that can be gained only by fellowship with God and study of His Word (see Ephesians 1:17, Ephesians 4:13, 1 Timothy 2:4).
Discernment. This is explained by Paul as being able to โapprove what is excellentโ (distinguishing it from what is morally harmful) โand so be pure and blamelessโ (Philippians 1:10, ESV).
Being sincere. The word in Greek means โjudged by the sunlightโ and refers to an untainted purity of action: โEverything that Christians do should be as transparent as the sunlight.โโEllen G. White, Reflecting Christ, p. 71.
Not causing offense. This means not being a stumbling block, not saying or doing anything that would make it more difficult for a person to believe.
Righteousness through Christ. Paul dwells at length on this in the epistles of Romans and Galatians and will expand on it also in Philippians 3:1-21. We have no righteousness of our own but only what we receive through Christ.
|
Whatever else we do, how can our love โabound still more and moreโ (Philippians 1:9, NKJV)? Why is that so important for the Christian life? (See also 1 Corinthians 13:1-8.) |
Are You Willing to be Imprisoned for Jesus?
But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, Philippians 1:12 NKJV
While no one wants to go to prison, especially if falsely accused of a crime they did not commit, would it be worth it to you to be falsely accused and sentenced to jail if you could lead just one person there to eternal salvation?ย

In Philippians, Paul says that his imprisonment actually helped spread the Gospel and encouraged others to be bold in spreading it. Acts 16 also mentions Paul and Silas being imprisoned in Philippi. They were singing songs of praise while the other prisoners were listening. If you were wrongfully imprisoned, would you be singing songs and praising God? I hope so, because something extraordinary happened. An earthquake opened up the prison. Instead of running for it, Paul and Silas ministered to the correctional officer and led him to salvation. You can read this fantastic story in Acts 16:25-34.ย
Much more recently, the Christian Post, among other Christian news agencies, has shared the testimony of a Chinese woman known as Sister Tong. Chinese officials arrested her for having an underground church in her home. After serving her 6-month sentence, instead of complaining, she was beaming with joy about the women’s ministry she had begun right there in prison. Like Paul, being in prison helped sister Tong spread the Gospel and has inspired others in countries where Christianity is illegal to be bolder in spreading it as well.ย
When you consider that Jesus left heaven to come to this cold, dark world to live and die to save others eternally, is there any place that is too cold or dark for you to go and save others? Jesus did not complain about coming to this cold, dark world to live and die, but came willingly. See John 10:17-18. Likewise, Paul and Silas were not protesting or pleading their innocence while in prison. They were praising the Lord. What a testimony to the warden and other prisoners! And more recently, instead of complaining about the terrible living conditions in a Chinese prison, Sister Tong beams with joy over being able to lead several women prisoners to Jesus and salvation.ย
Paul, Silas, and Sister Tong not only endured prison and persecution to save others eternally, but did so joyfully. Is there any place you are unwilling to go joyfully to lead others to eternal salvation?ย

2: Reasons for Thanksgiving and Prayer โ Singing with Inspiration
The great lesson we learn from dear Paul this quarter is that we are toย
Stand Up! Stand Up For Jesus! โ Hymn 618. This is a beautiful theme hymn to give us a great reminder of what we need in our world that is falling apart these days.
Throughout this week’s study time, there are a lot of hymns from which to choose which reflect all that Paul says
with his thanks and the prayers:ย
Hymn 276 – Thanks To God,ย
Hymn 559 – Now Thank We All Our God,ย
Hymn 566 – Father, We Thank You,ย
Hymn 478 – Sweet Hour Of Prayerย andย
Hymn 658 – Heavenly Father, Hear Our Prayer. Paul shows us how to love our gracious God and sayย
O Love Of God, How Strong And True! – Hymn 79.
With all Paul’s thanks and prayers, he still saysย
Go, Preach My Gospel – Hymn 378, all becauseย
I Know Whom I Have Believed – Hymn 511ย (Thursday). This also shows another aspect of Paul’s strengths because he can sayย
Only Trust – Hymn 279. We can learn these wonderful Christian (Christ-like) traits by requestingย
Give Me The Bible – Hymn 272ย where I can learn so much.ย
Further on Thursday, the Holy Spirit comes along to guide us:ย Hymn 260 – Hover O’er Me Holy Spiritย and fill me now. This is all the more poignant as we see suchย Marvellous Grace – Hymn 109ย from the loving Jesus Christ who taught so much to his disciples and can still be doing for us today.
Our dear sister Ellen White reminds us on Friday thatย
I’m A Pilgrim – Hymn 444ย and by faith we can receive an inheritance when weย Trust And Obey – Hymn 590.ย
Please continue to search the scriptures this week to be blessed, and to bless others.
To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at:ย https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/
Anotherย great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but canโt find it in your hymnal. Go toย https://www.sdahymnal.org/
ย 2 Timothy 2:15 KJVย โย โStudy to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.โ
2: Reasons for Thanksgiving and Prayer โ Teaching Plan
Key Thought: We should be dependent on God. So our lives will be an outworking of His will. As we commit our ways to Him, He will direct our steps.
January 10, 2026
1. Have a volunteer read Philippians 1:3-8.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- What is Paul thankful for? What assurances does he give, and why is that important?

- Personal Application: How do you understand that God will finish the good work He has begun in you? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states, โWhat about your past week? Tell me what you had to be thankful for? Did you thank God for these things? Or did you now realize how much more thankful you could be than you realize? How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Philippians 1:9-11.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What is Paulโs focus here, and what big requests does he make? What does this indicate about prayer?
- Personal Application: Why is having our love abound more and more, and why is it so important for the Christian life? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states, โHow is your faith and prayer life? Do you ask God for big things in your life? Have you dedicated yourself to sharing the gospel and preparing people for the second coming? Are you sharing your love with others in tangible ways?โ How would you respond to your relative?
3. Have a volunteer read Philippians 11:12-18.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- How did Paul view his imprisonment? What lessons can we learn from his attitude?
- Personal Application: Have you learned any lessons from experiences that were bad, but also brought out some benefits? How can we learn to trust God even if we donโt see benefits in our bad experiences? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, โThe church is full of negative nancys, pessimistic phils, and trembling timothys. Thatโs why the work is not moving forward as it should. Just like the Israelites in the desert. They were more concerned with what they didnโt have than what they had. We are more focused inward rather than outward. We are too worldly, selfish, confrontational than we should be..โ How would you respond to your friend?
4. Have a volunteer read Colossians 1:9-12
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What specific requests do you find in Paulโs prayer?
- Personal Application: If someone asks you, โHow do you know if God is leading you in one direction or another? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this weekโs lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared. โMinistry of Healing, p. 148).
Understanding for All
The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:130.
The Word of God presents the most potent means of education, as well as the most valuable source of knowledge, within the reach of humanity. The understanding adapts itself to the dimensions of the subjects with which it is required to deal. If occupied with trivial, commonplace matters only, never summoned to earnest effort to comprehend great and eternal truths, it becomes dwarfed and enfeebled. Hence the value of the Scriptures as a means of intellectual culture. Their perusal in a reverent and teachable spirit will expand and strengthen the mind as no other study can. They lead directly to the contemplation of the most exalted, the most ennobling, and the most stupendous truths that are presented to the human mind. They direct our thoughts to the infinite Author of all things.
We see revealed the character of the Eternal and listen to His voice as He communes with patriarchs and prophets. We see explained the mysteries of His providence, the great problems which have engaged the attention of every thoughtful mind, but which, without the aid of revelation, human intellect seeks in vain to solve. They open to our understanding a simple yet sublime system of theology, presenting truths which a child may grasp but which are yet so far reaching as to baffle the powers of the strongest mind….
Our Savior did not ignore learning or despise education, yet He chose unlearned fishermen for the work of the gospel because they had not been schooled in the false customs and traditions of the world. They were men of good natural ability and of a humble, teachable spirit; men whom He could educate for His great work….
The learned lawyers, priests, and scribes scorned to be taught by Christ. They desired to teach Him, and frequently made the attempt, only to be defeated by the wisdom that laid bare their ignorance and rebuked their folly. In their pride and bigotry, they would not accept the words of Christ, yet they were surprised at the wisdom with which He spake…. But the words and deeds of the humble Teacher, recorded by the unlettered companions of His daily life, have exerted a living power upon the minds of men and women from that day to the present.โThe Review and Herald, September 25, 1883.

Dear Friends,
Some years ago, Eileen worked for a private nursing home. One early in the morning, she got a call from one of the other workers. The lady who worked the day shift wanted to trade working times. Her daughter had fallen and she needed to take her to the doctor for stitches. Since Eileen had traded with her before, she said okay.
Unfortunately, the woman never showed up to work Eileen’s shift so she had to work both shifts. She was so exhausted that she wasn’t sure she could stay awake long enough to drive home, so she called to talk to her until she got home.
How much we need our Heavenly Father to โtalk to us all the way home.โ He reminds us, โWithout me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5
How His Great Heart of Love must ache as He watches us struggling day by day without Him. He would love to take complete control of our situation and make it all right, but He will not force us to allow Him to do so. Instead, He waits to be asked to take control. Without Jesus dwelling within us, speaking to us through His Holy Word, guiding us to His Heavenly Home all our efforts to get there are in vain. Solomon commented on such a life, “Vanity of vanities; all is vanity. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.” Ecc. 3:2, 14, 17
Praise God! If we call upon Him, He is more willing to give us the help we so desperately. If we allow Him too, He will give us the comfort and rest that we so much need in these frantic times. Beyond that, He will change us into His image and give our life true meaning.
May we allow our Dear Saviour to take complete control of our life and guide us all the way home is my prayer.

Sunday: Fellowship in the Gospel
Daily Lesson for Sunday 4th of January 2026
Read Philippians 1:3-8. What is Paul thankful for? What reasยญsurances does he give the Philippians, and why is that important?
Paul established the church in Philippi; thus, we can see the warmth of Christian fellowship pervading his letter. Though separated by hundreds of miles, Paul, chained and imprisoned, carries the church and its members on his heart; he longs for them โwith the affection of Jesus Christโ (Philippians 1:8, NKJV); he gives thanks to God for them. Paulโs prayer of thanksgiving even gives a glimpse of Jesusโ intercession for us in heaven.
On the high priestโs breastplate were 12 stones representing the 12 tribes of Israel. The people were to be โon his heartโ as he interceded for them (Exodus 28:29, ESV). In an even greater way, as our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary, Jesus carries the names of His people with Him before the Father.
Interestingly, the wording of Philippians 1:3 is ambiguous, underscoring the close relationship between Paul and the Philippians. Itโs usually translated that Paul remembers them in prayer, but it could also refer to their remembrance of him. In any case, it underscores the close mutuality they share, which the word โfellowshipโ (Greek: koinonia) also underscores. As Paul had fellowship in Christโs sufferings (Philippians 3:10), the Philippians โsharedโ (Greek: sunkoinลneล) in Paulโs sufferings and shared financially to support Paulโs ministry (Philippians 4:14-15). This mutuality, which was โfrom the first day until nowโ (Philippians 1:5), leads him to thank God for them and to pray for them โwith joyโ (Philippians 1:4).
Interestingly, Paul describes his prison setting quite positivelyโas providing opportunity for โthe defense and confirmation of the gospelโ (Philippians 1:7, NKJV). His use of these two legal terms suggests his trial is imminent, but also that Paul is actively engaging soldiers and visitors with the gospel. Defending it (Greek apologia) against attacks and confirming its eternal verities are both essential. Paul seems to care less about his own future than about vindication of the gospel itself. Whether he lives or dies, Paul is confident that God will finish the โgood workโ He has begun in all who trust in Him (Philippians 1:6).
|
How do you understand the promise that God will finish the โgood work in youโ (Philippians 1:6)? What does that mean? Will this work ever end before the Second Coming? |
