“Give Me This Mountain”

April 27, 2024 By admin

I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me…. Now therefore give me this mountain. Joshua 14:11, 12.

Before the distribution of the land had been entered upon, Caleb, accompanied by the heads of his tribe, came forward with a special claim. Except Joshua, Caleb was now the oldest man in Israel. Caleb and Joshua were the only ones among the spies who had brought a good report of the Land of Promise, encouraging the people to go up and possess it in the name of the Lord. Caleb now reminded Joshua of the promise then made, as the reward of his faithfulness: “The land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s forever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord.” He therefore presented a request that Hebron be given him for a possession…. His claim was immediately granted. To none could the conquest of this giant stronghold be more safely entrusted….

Caleb’s faith now was just what it was when his testimony had contradicted the evil report of the spies. He had believed God’s promise that He would put His people in possession of Canaan, and in this he had followed the Lord fully. He had endured with his people the long wandering in the wilderness, thus sharing the disappointments and burdens of the guilty; yet he made no complaint of this, but exalted the mercy of God that had preserved him in the wilderness when his brethren were cut off…. The brave old warrior was desirous of giving to the people an example that would honor God, and encourage the tribes fully to subdue the land which their fathers had deemed unconquerable. Caleb obtained the inheritance upon which his heart had been set for forty years, and, trusting in God to be with him, he “drove thence the three sons of Anak.” …

The cowards and rebels had perished in the wilderness, but the righteous spies ate of the grapes of Eshcol. To each was given according to his faith. The unbelieving had seen their fears fulfilled. Notwithstanding God’s promise, they had declared that it was impossible to inherit Canaan, and they did not possess it. But those who trusted in God, looking not so much to the difficulties to be encountered as to the strength of their Almighty Helper, entered the goodly land.41Ibid., 513-514.

Dear Friends,

When my grandmother, Ida, was in her twenties, she worked as a secretary for Dr. Upjohn. She looked forward to working each day. Indeed, her work did not seem like work, but it was a pleasure, because he was such a kind man. Dr. Upjohn treated his workers with respect and was always concerned for their welfare. Those who worked for him, felt that he was their friend, their benefactor. And he was. Their wages were higher, their benefits better, their future brighter than any other employees of any other company throughout the nation. Other companies were having labor problems, but the workers at the his company, were happy and content. Dr. Upjohn put into practice our Dear Saviour’s admonition: “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” Matt 7:12

The disciples had to learn this principle. They were always fighting for first place. “Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshiping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mat 20:20-28

A life of service should be our focus as well. Selfishness and self-seeking have no part in God’s Great Kingdom of Love. Yet, how often we gossip and criticize and wound the very ones we should be helping and loving. Paul wrote, “be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Phil 2:2-4; Gal 2:2 Indeed, our Loving Creator’s plan was for His creatures to find their greatest happiness in serving others. He said, “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.” “He that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” Mark 9:35; Matt 23:11, 12

May we put self aside and truly be “the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, loving Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and following in the footsteps of the One Who “humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Eph 6:6; Phil 2:8

Lesson 5: Faith Against All Odds

God’s Unwavering Faithfulness: Strength, Protection, and Hope Amid Challenges
In Lesson 5, the unwavering faithfulness of God to His servants, especially during the Reformation, is highlighted. Despite the powerful enemies and challenges they faced, heavenly forces always stood by their side. Luther emphasized the power of prayer as a crucial tool in spiritual warfare. The central doctrine of justification by faith was illuminated as the foundation of the gospel and our hope for salvation. Through Luther’s inspiring hymn, the steadfast power and presence of God in the lives of believers are underscored.
5.1 God’s Word Alone
The transformative power of God’s Word during the Reformation and today
David had deep reverence and love for God’s Word, as evident from Psalm 119. This attitude of reverence for the Holy Scriptures also shaped the Reformers, who viewed the Bible as the foundation of their faith and doctrine. For them, the Word of God was not just a source of inspiration but also a means to strengthen their faith and courage. Today, the Bible remains a central source of power, offering comfort, hope, guidance, and wisdom in our lives. Reformers like John Wycliffe were willing to make significant personal sacrifices for the dissemination and defense of God’s Word, demonstrating the profound impact the Word of God can have on believers’ lives.
5.2 Passing on God’s Word
Unwavering faith and sacrifice: The legacy of spreading God’s Word
Despite the immense challenges and trials faced by both Paul and the Reformers, they had unwavering confidence in the power and truth of God’s Word. Paul emphasized the superiority of truth, while Reformers like William Tyndale were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the dissemination of the Holy Scriptures. Tyndale’s passion and determination led to the publication of influential English Bible translations that have influenced millions to this day. Their faith and dedication serve as a living example of how spreading God’s Word bears fruit and has eternal implications.
5.3 Enlightened by the Spirit
The role of the Holy Spirit in proper Bible interpretation and faith leadership
The enlightenment by the Holy Spirit plays a central role in the correct interpretation of the Bible. Martin Luther personally experienced this divine guidance when he discovered the clarity and power of the Holy Scriptures. The cited Bible verses emphasize that the Holy Spirit acts as a divine interpreter and guide in understanding Scripture. It is important to recognize that the supernatural nature of the Bible should not be downplayed, as Satan may try to undermine its divine essence. Reformers like John Knox emphasized that the Holy Scripture is clear in itself, and the Holy Spirit reveals its truths, leaving no doubts except for those who choose to close themselves off.
5.4 Christ Alone … Grace Alone
Saving Grace: Christ alone as the source of redemption
The central Bible verses teach us that salvation is an undeserved gift from God received through faith in Jesus Christ. Although we have all sinned and deserve death, God offers us the opportunity for eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ. The Reformers, led by Martin Luther, emphasized Christ’s saving grace and not human works as the path to salvation. Luther himself was deeply moved by the unconditional love and grace of God revealed in Christ. It is a central understanding of the gospel that our righteousness does not depend on our own works but solely on Christ’s righteous act on the cross.
5.5 Obedience: The Fruit of Faith
Transformation through grace: Christ as the center of our faith and life
The cited Bible verses emphasize that true redemption occurs solely through Christ’s righteousness and not through human works. Through God’s grace and faith in Jesus Christ, we are not only saved but also transformed. John Wesley personally experienced this transformation and recognized the power and grace of the gospel. The cited verses from the letters of Peter, Colossians, and Ephesians show that the Christian life is an ongoing process of growth and change. The Reformers and Bible-believing Christians throughout history demonstrated deep devotion and willingness to suffer for their faith, underscoring their unwavering hope and freedom in Christ.
5.6 Summary
Strength and hope through unwavering faith in challenging times
The lesson 5 emphasizes the central role of faith in difficult times. It shows how biblical figures and the Reformers were strengthened by their unwavering faith in God despite resistance and persecution. The Holy Spirit serves as light and guidance in our lives, especially in understanding the Holy Scriptures. Christ alone is the source of our redemption, and through Him, we experience the transformative power of God’s grace. The Christian life is a constant process of growth and change, offering us freedom and hope in Christ.

Sunday: God’s Word Alone

April 27, 2024 By admin

Daily Lesson for Sunday 28th of April 2024

Read Psalms 119:103-104; Psalms 119:147; and Psalms 119:162. What was David’s attitude toward God’s Word? How did this impact the Reformers, and how does it influence our lives today?

The Bible was the foundation of the Reformers’ faith and the essence of their teaching. They understood that they were handling the inspired “word of God which lives and abides forever” (1 Peter 1:23, NKJV).

Open Bible

They treasured every word. As they read its pages and believed its promises, their faith was strengthened and their courage renewed. “So with all the promises of God’s word. In them He is speaking to us individually, speaking as directly as if we could listen to His voice. It is in these promises that Christ communicates to us His grace and power. They are leaves from that tree which is ‘for the healing of the nations.’ Revelation 22:2. Received, assimilated, they are to be the strength of the character, the inspiration and sustenance of the life. Nothing else can have such healing power. Nothing besides can impart the courage and faith which give vital energy to the whole being.”—Ellen G. White, The Ministry of Healing, p. 122.

The Scriptures shine joy upon our sorrow, hope upon our discouragement, light upon our darkness. They give direction for our confusion, certainty in our perplexity, strength in our weakness, and wisdom in our ignorance. When we meditate upon the Word of God and by faith trust its promises, God’s life-giving power energizes our entire being physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

The Reformers saturated their minds with Scripture. They lived by the Word, and many of them died because of the Word. They were not casual, complacent, careless Christians with a superficial devotional life. They knew that without the power of God’s Word, they would not withstand the forces of evil arrayed against them.

John Wycliffe’s passion was to translate the Bible into the English language so that the average person could read and understand it. Because that was illegal, he was tried for his faith, condemned as a heretic, and sentenced to death. At his trial, Wycliffe made an earnest appeal. “With whom, think you, are ye contending? With an old man on the brink of the grave? No! With Truth—Truth which is stronger than you, and will overcome you.”—Wylie, book 2, chapter 13, quoted in Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, p. 90. Wycliffe’s dying words were fulfilled as the light of God’s truth dispelled the darkness of the Middle Ages.

In what ways have the Scriptures comforted you in times of trial?

Editorial: “Confessions of a Failed Evangelist”

April 27, 2024 By admin

My attempts at being an evangelist have been about as successful as my one (and only) academy banquet to which I got stood up by my date. My earliest Adventist outreach memory was of me in Hong Kong at age 5 when my missionary mom and her friends took me around town giving out “Stop […] Source: https://atoday.org/editorial-confessions-of-a-failed-evangelist/
