Sunday: The Essentialness of Love

August 8, 2026 By admin

Daily Lesson for Sunday 9th of August 2026

Last week we touched on the theme of love as seen in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. We need to explore Paul’s words here in even more depth.

Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. Summarize what he is telling us about love.
The Cross of Love

Paul is not saying that tongues (1 Corinthians 13:1), prophecy, understanding, knowledge, faith (1 Corinthians 13:2), and benevolence (1 Corinthians 13:3) are useless. They are useless only if not driven by love.

The kind of love Paul is talking about is not expressed in such sentences as “I love strawberries” or “I love my friends” or even “I love my spouse and children.” Neither is he talking about the kind of love that one sees in movies. And no, it is not erotic love, although this passage has been commonly used in wedding sermons.

This love cannot be reduced to affection, or charity, or virtue, or benevolence. Yet, they all represent it to a lesser or greater degree. This love is a special grace bestowed upon us by the Spirit. Indeed, love in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 is the Spirit-given motivation that leads us to act with affection, charity, virtue, and benevolence. It is a total commitment of our actions, feelings, and thoughts toward Christ and our neighbors.

Read Matthew 24:12. What warning does Jesus give us here?

That is why agapē love is so essential and necessary. In the power of Christ, we cannot let love grow cold in our homes, churches, and neighborhoods. We have the example of Christ on the cross, dying for us. What better and more powerful expression of this kind of love could there be? Though of course we could never equally express that kind of love, by God’s grace we should strive to reveal it in our own lives to whatever degree we can.

What are some times when, indeed, an expression of this kind of love could have made a powerfully positive impression on someone who needed this love more than anything else?

📘Sabbath School with Pastor Mark Finley | 💞 Lesson 7: A Portrait of Love | ✉️ First and Second Corinthians | 3/2026

August 8, 2026 By admin

Series: ✉ THE CORINTHIAN LETTERS with Pastor Mark Finley

💞 Lesson 7. A Portrait of Love
✝ Christ as the Standard of Our Lives

Introduction:

Lesson 7 focuses on love as Paul describes it in 1 Corinthians 13. This love is more than emotion, affection, or human kindness; it is an attitude of the heart produced by the Holy Spirit. Paul shows that even spiritual gifts, knowledge, faith, and self-sacrifice lose their value without love. In Jesus we see the perfect picture of this love, especially in His patience, kindness, truth, and self-giving sacrifice on the cross. At the same time, we are invited not merely to admire this love but to live it out in everyday life. This lesson reminds us that faith, hope, and love remain, but the greatest of these is love.

Content:

❤ 7.1 The Essentialness of Love
🔥 Without love, even the greatest gifts lose their value

Paul shows that even impressive spiritual gifts lose their true meaning without love. Speaking in tongues, prophecy, knowledge, faith, and self-sacrifice may appear great outwardly, but without the love of Christ they remain spiritually empty. The love Paul speaks of is more than emotion, sympathy, or human affection; it is a devotion to God and others produced by the Holy Spirit. Jesus warned that in the end times the love of many would grow cold, and for that very reason the church needs this divine love all the more urgently. At the cross we see the highest expression of this love: Christ gave Himself for people who needed salvation. Those who receive this love will learn to act in their families, churches, and everyday lives in such a way that Christ becomes visible.

🤲 7.2 What Love Does
🌿 Love becomes visible through patience, kindness, and faithful endurance

Paul shows that love is not primarily a feeling but is revealed through concrete actions. It is patient and kind, rejoices in the truth, and remains steadfast even under pressure. Genuine love does not seek its own interests but protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. In this way, Paul describes a love that closely resembles the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. This love does not arise from human strength alone but through the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart. Those who love in this way reveal God’s character in everyday life and build others up.

🚫 7.3 What Love Does Not Do
🧼 Love rejects pride, envy, and selfishness

Paul describes not only what love does but also what it deliberately avoids. Genuine love is not envious, does not boast, and does not place itself at the center. It does not hurt others through arrogance, rudeness, or selfish behavior. Love is not easily irritated and keeps no inner record of the wrongs committed by others. Nor does it rejoice over the mistakes, weaknesses, or sins of others, but instead seeks their restoration. In this way, Paul shows that love is not merely outwardly kind but cleanses the heart from pride, selfishness, and malicious joy.

✝ 7.4 A Portrait of Jesus
👑 Jesus as the perfect picture of divine love

In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul describes not merely an ideal of human love but ultimately a portrait of Jesus. In Christ we see perfectly what love means: patience, kindness, truth, faithfulness, self-sacrifice, and endurance. His love is revealed not only in words but most clearly at the cross, where He gave His life for us. This love may seem beyond our reach when we look only at ourselves, but it transforms us when we look to Jesus and allow His Spirit to work within us. God loves us first so that we may learn to love others with the same selfless love. True Christian love therefore does not arise from our own strength but from a living relationship with Christ.

⚓ 7.5 Faith, Hope, and Love
🌅 The enduring greatness of love in the light of eternity

Paul shows that spiritual gifts are important, but they will not always serve the same purpose. Prophecy, speaking in tongues, and limited knowledge will one day no longer be necessary when we see God face to face. Faith, hope, and love shape the Christian life, yet love is the greatest because it reflects the very nature of God. “God is love” means that His entire attitude toward us is characterized by holy, selfless, and saving love. This truth is good news because our salvation rests not on our own strength but on God’s unchanging love. Until Christ returns, faith, hope, and love should shape our thinking, actions, and service.

📌 7.6 Summary
💞 Love as the nature of Christ and the enduring standard of faith

Lesson 7 shows that love is not secondary in the Christian life but essential. Even the greatest spiritual gifts lose their value without love because they no longer serve Christ or the building up of others. Paul describes love as patient, kind, truthful, enduring, and hopeful, while also being free from envy, pride, selfishness, and malicious joy. In Jesus we see the perfect portrait of this love, especially in His self-giving sacrifice on the cross. Faith, hope, and love shape the lives of Jesus’ followers, but love is the greatest because it reflects the very nature of God. Therefore, we are invited to live from the love of Christ and make it visible in our families, churches, and everyday lives.

EDITORIAL: The Biggest Adventist Pep-Rally

August 8, 2026 By admin

When I was a child in public school, occasionally before a basketball game we’d get time off from class for an afternoon pep rally. We’d gather in the gymnasium, where four high school girls would jump around with pompoms yelling, “Gimme a G” “G!” and we’d spell out the name of the little North Dakota […] Source: https://atoday.org/editorial-the-biggest-adventist-pep-rally/
