Monday: Godโs Invitation
Readย Hebrews 12:18-21. What was the experience of Israel at Mount Sinai?
When God called Israel from Egypt, His plan was to create a personal, intimate relationship with them. He said, โYou have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eaglesโ wings and brought you to Myselfโย (Exodus 19:3-4, NKJV).
Thus, through Moses God gave the necessary instructions to prepare the people to meet with Him. The people needed to consecrate themselves firstย (Exodus 19:10-15). Those who ascended to the foot of the mountain without preparation would die. Nevertheless, once the people had prepared themselves for two days, then โwhen the trumpet sounds a long blastโ on the third day, God instructed that the people โshall come up to the mountainโย (Exodus 19:13, ESV). He wanted them to have the experience Moses and the leaders of the people would have when they ascended the mountain and โbeheld God and ate and drankโ in His presence (Exodus 24:9-11, ESV). The people later recognized that they had seen Godโs glory and that it was possible for God to speak โwith man, and man still liveโย (Deuteronomy 5:24, ESV). But, when the moment came, they lacked faith. Moses explained years later: โyou were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountainโย (Deuteronomy 5:5, ESV). Instead, they asked Moses to be their intermediaryย (Deuteronomy 5:25-27, compare withย Exodus 20:18-21).
Godโs manifestation of His holiness at Mt. Sinai was to teach the people to learn to โfear,โ or respect, Him. The โfear of the Lordโ leads to life, wisdom, and honorย (Deuteronomy 4:10; compare withย Psalm 111:10,ย Proverbs 1:7,ย Proverbs 9:10,ย Proverbs 10:27)ย โ and also to learn that He is merciful and graciousย (Exodus 34:4-8). Thus, while God wanted Israel to come to Him, the people became afraid and requested Moses to be their intermediary. The description in Hebrews of the events at Sinai follows primarily Mosesโ reminding the people of their lack of faith and their apostasy with the golden calf, and how he was afraid of meeting God because of their sinย (Deuteronomy 9:19). The peopleโs reaction was not Godโs plan for them; it was, instead, the result of their faithlessness.
Because of Jesus, why should we not be afraid to draw near to a holy God? What are the conditions, however, for us to be able to draw near? |

Commentary by Edwin Reynolds:
"Joseph started with dreams of greatness only to be thrown into a hole in the ground and sold into slavery by his brothers. He became the head servant for a government official, only to be falsely accused of rape and thrown into prison. Now he’s the second most powerful man in Egypt, his brothers groveling at his feet. It’s payback time. Except he doesn’t take revenge. Instead, Joseph looks back at his life and, for the first time, sees the big picture. Through all the struggles, he sees that God has been working out His will. The slavery, the prison, the power –all the pieces now make sense. God has given Joseph the task of preserving the promise that He made to Abraham (vs. 7). God hasn’t forgotten about Joseph – God was at work the entire time. Maybe you’ve had a lifelong dream of doing something great for God. But your plans have been derailed and you’ve hit a dead end. Maybe it seems like God has given up on you. But God hasn’t forgotten the dream He put in your heart – it’s His dream too. Just like He did with Joseph, God is fighting your battles, making His purpose become reality in your life." โค๏ธ Jump to Daily Bible Reading https://www.revivalandreformation.org/bhp/en/bible/gen/45 Our accounts in other social networks:
