Adam was the first human being created by God. God formed him from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into him. In this way, Adam became a living soul.

At first, Adam lived in a perfect world. He knew no sin, fear, death, or separation from God.

The First Man

Introduction

Elihu continues his final speech and asks Job to be patient with him a little longer. He wants to defend God’s justice and show that God’s actions are always characterized by wisdom. In doing so, he directs attention both to God’s work of instruction and to the wonders of nature. Job chapter 36 prepares the reader for the moment when God Himself will speak.

Commentary

Elihu begins with the words: “Bear with me a little longer.” He is convinced that not everything has yet been said about God’s actions. His concern is to defend God’s justice and make it clear that God never acts arbitrarily.

He explains that God never loses sight of the righteous. Even when they pass through suffering, He remains near to them. Difficulties can serve to humble people, turn them away from wrong paths, and teach them to listen anew to God’s voice.

At the same time, Elihu warns against responding to suffering with bitterness or rebellion. Those who close themselves off from God risk missing the lessons He desires to teach through difficult times. Nevertheless, this does not mean that every experience of suffering is a punishment for personal guilt—a truth that the book of Job as a whole makes clear.

Elihu urges Job to consider God’s greatness. No one is a teacher like God. No human being can command Him or accuse Him of doing wrong. God’s ways surpass human understanding.

In the second part of the chapter, Elihu directs attention toward nature. He describes the water cycle: God causes water to evaporate, gathers it in the clouds, and sends rain at the proper time. Storms, rain, and clouds reveal His power and wisdom. Many of these processes remain mysterious to human beings.

Through these images, Elihu prepares the reader for what will soon happen. Before long, God Himself will speak to Job out of the storm. Elihu’s description of creation points toward the Creator, whose wisdom is immeasurable.

Although Elihu does not know all the answers, he leads Job one important step further: Instead of focusing only on his own suffering, he directs his eyes toward the greatness of God. It is there that new trust begins to grow.

Job chapter 36 reminds us that God is at work even when we do not understand His ways. His instruction flows from His love, His power is revealed in creation, and His wisdom remains far greater than our own understanding.

Devotional for the Day

The month of August begins with a deeply personal question: What effect does the hope of Jesus’ return have on my life? The Bible does not merely tell us to wait for Jesus. It also shows us that this hope transforms our hearts. Those who truly believe that Jesus is coming again live differently—not out of fear, but out of love; not under pressure, but with longing; not in their own strength, but through the grace of God.

John writes: “Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself.” This means that the hope of Jesus does not remain theoretical. It touches our thoughts, words, decisions, relationships, and inner motives. Those who expect the coming King do not want to hold on to anything that separates them from Christ. The return of Jesus is therefore not only a future event, but also a present power for sanctification.

Sanctification does not mean that human beings improve themselves until they are able to stand before God. Sanctification is God’s work in the heart of a person who surrenders to Christ. God purifies what we cannot purify ourselves. He changes what is deeply rooted within us. He forms a character that increasingly reflects Jesus.

This purification often takes place quietly and daily. It happens when we stand honestly before God in prayer. It happens when we read His Word and not only understand it, but accept it. It happens when we forgive even though it is difficult. It happens when we resist temptation, not because we are strong, but because Christ holds us. It happens when we learn to surrender our thoughts, words, and decisions to Jesus.

Being ready when Jesus comes does not mean creating an outward appearance of righteousness. It means living before God with an open heart. It means growing spiritually every day. It means becoming more like Christ because His Spirit is working within us. The hope of His return purifies the heart because it repeatedly asks us: Does my life truly belong to the coming King?

Hope Transforms the Heart

Biblical hope is not merely a beautiful thought about the future. It is a power that works today. Those who expect Jesus do not want to spend their lives in indifference. The hope of Christ makes us watchful, humble, and willing to be changed.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“Only those who are becoming like Christ will be able to stand when He appears.”

(Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 413)

This statement shows what the month of August is about. God does not merely want to prepare people who know much about the Second Coming. He desires to prepare people whose characters have been shaped by Christ.

Purification Through Daily Surrender

The purification of the heart does not take place through occasional religious feelings, but through daily surrender. Every day, we may invite Christ anew to order our thoughts, examine our motives, and renew our hearts.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“We cannot change our hearts ourselves; but when we surrender ourselves to Christ, His grace works renewal within us.”

(Steps to Christ, p. 18)

This removes the burden of trying to save ourselves. We do not have to make ourselves holy. But we may open our hearts to the One who is able to sanctify, purify, and transform us.

Being Ready Means Growing

Readiness for the return of Jesus does not develop in a single moment. It grows day by day. Every day is an opportunity to draw closer to Christ. Every day is an opportunity to let go of an old attitude, make a new decision in faith, and grow in the character of Jesus.

Sometimes we can hardly see this growth. We may notice our weaknesses more readily than our progress. Yet God works faithfully. When we remain in Christ, He will complete the work He has begun. Character development is preparation for eternity, and this preparation takes place in the midst of everyday life.

Therefore, this month begins with hope—not with fear of our own failure, but with trust in Christ. He calls us, purifies us, transforms us, and prepares us for His coming. Soon the King will come—and today is a good day to draw closer to Him.

Dear Father in Heaven,

thank You for the hope of Jesus’ return.

Help me not only to know this hope, but also to be transformed by it.

Purify my heart from everything that draws me away from Christ.

Shape my character through Your Word, Your grace, and Your Holy Spirit.

Help me to grow spiritually today and to be ready when Jesus comes.
