Lesson 10.Lessons of the Past | 10.1 The Lord’s Unstoppable Faithfulness

March 2, 2024 By admin

Lesson 10.Lessons of the Past
Reflection and Insight: Lessons from the Past
The Bible is full of narratives about God’s faithful leadership, His intervention in human affairs, and the life-changing events that have shaped the history of His people. Through studying these stories, we not only gain insight into God’s character and His actions but also valuable lessons and principles that can help strengthen our faith and deepen our relationship with God.
In this lesson, we will explore how to remember the past and its significance for our faith and daily lives. We will examine how the Psalms and other biblical texts reflect the history of God’s people and encourage us to trust in God’s guidance even when we don’t always understand the reasons for His actions.
Furthermore, we will reflect on how we, as individuals and as a community, can apply the lessons from the past in practical ways. How can we ensure that we remember God’s faithfulness and not ignore the lessons of the past? How can we recognize God’s providential care in our lives and trust in it even when circumstances seem challenging?
This lesson invites us to ponder the importance of the past and recognize how it shapes our present understanding and relationship with God. May our study of the history of God’s people help us to grow in our faith and encourage us to trust in God’s guidance and care as we prepare for the future He has in store for us.

10.1 God’s Unfailing Faithfulness
The Unwavering Hand of God Throughout the Ages
Read Psalm 78. Which three important historical epochs are highlighted in this psalm? What recurring lessons does Asaph draw from each period?
Psalm 78 is a powerful retrospective on the history of Israel, showcasing God’s unwavering faithfulness to His people alongside their repeated missteps. In this poignant psalm, three significant historical epochs are highlighted: the exodus from Egypt, the settlement of Canaan, and the time of David.
The psalm begins with a compelling exhortation to listen to the words and pass them on to our children, so they do not forget God’s deeds (verses 4-8). Here, the history of Israel serves as a lesson to encourage future generations not to tread the same path of unfaithfulness.
It is fascinating to observe how Psalm 78 describes God’s deeds in the exodus from Egypt, His guidance through the wilderness, and the miracles He performed for His people. Yet, despite all these revelations of divine intervention, the people repeatedly fell into disbelief and rebellion.
The settlement of Canaan is also illuminated, but here too, we see the people’s inconsistency and lack of trust in God’s promises. Even in the time of David, when the monarchy was established, the people’s faithfulness wavered.
The psalmist emphasizes that the central cause of Israel’s unfaithfulness was their failure to trust God. This root of unfaithfulness is evident in their forgetfulness of God’s deeds, their lack of trust, and their disproportionate pursuit of self-will.
It is disheartening to realize that despite the obvious wonders and evidence of God’s goodness, each new generation of Israelites made the same mistakes. Yet, instead of condemning past generations, the psalm reminds us that we are all susceptible to spiritual blindness and forgetfulness. We must constantly remember to praise God’s deeds and honor His covenant.
Ultimately, Psalm 78 underscores the limitation of human efforts without the foundation of trust in God’s faithfulness and grace. It encourages us not to rely on our own works but on the unwavering hand of God, which guides and sustains us even when we turn away. This psalm is a solemn reminder of the importance of remaining faithful to God and never forgetting His work in our lives.

The connection between our daily lives and our faith, as illustrated by Psalm 78, is of central importance to our spiritual journey and personal development. Here are some key aspects of this connection:
  1. Memory and gratitude: Psalm 78 reminds us of the importance of reflecting on history and remembering God’s deeds in our lives. In daily life, we can easily get lost in the challenges and demands of life, forgetting how God has guided and blessed us in the past. By consciously remembering God’s faithfulness and grace, we can cultivate gratitude and develop a deeper understanding of His ongoing care.
  2. Trust and obedience: A central aspect of faith is trusting in God’s guidance and being willing to obey His will. Psalm 78 shows that Israel’s disobedience and unbelief led to their mistakes. Similarly, in daily life, we can learn to trust in God’s guidance and obey His commandments, even when it is difficult to set aside our own plans and desires.
  3. Learning from the past: By reflecting on the mistakes and triumphs of the past, we can learn from them and adjust our behavior accordingly. Psalm 78 warns against repeating the same mistakes that Israel made by forgetting God and not remaining faithful to His path. In daily life, we can recognize similar patterns and strive to break them by consciously choosing God’s way and learning from the experiences of others and our own history.
  4. Dependency on God’s grace: Finally, Psalm 78 reminds us that our own efforts and endeavors are limited and ultimately rely on God’s faithfulness and grace. In daily life, we can easily be deceived into believing that we can achieve everything on our own. However, Psalm 78 reminds us that our trust should ultimately rest on God alone, who carries us in His boundless love and care.
Overall, Psalm 78 shows us how closely connected our daily lives are to our faith and how important it is to consciously nurture and strengthen this connection. By remembering God’s faithfulness, trusting Him, and learning from the past, we can lead a fulfilled and meaningful life shaped by our faith.

10: Lessons of the Past – Singing with Inspiration

March 2, 2024 By admin

The beautiful picture on the front of our lesson pamphlet brings us our theme hymn for this quarter with its two variations in melody:
Hymn 552/546 – The Lord’s My Shepherd.

Psalm 57:9 “I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing to You among the nations”.

“In numerous psalms, praise takes the form of narrating the Lord’s mighty acts of salvation” as do
Hymn 646 – To The Name That Brings Salvation and
Hymn 339 – God Is My Strong Salvation. Just as the people in the past needed God’s help, we also can request
O God, Our Help – Hymn 103.

Sunday gives us the wonderful hymn
Great Is Thy Faithfulness – Hymn 100 which helps to sum up the study of the day.

Monday’s study commences with the inspiration of being faithful:
Hymn 602 – O Brother, Be Faithful and takes us on a small journey of our Shepherd’s leading in
He Leadeth Me – Hymn 537 and then shows our growth in
I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus – Hymn 535.

Our repentance transforms our past story in the
Marvelous Grace – Hymn 109 of our Loving Lord throughout Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday’s study times. Then, with our hearts overwhelmed by His marvellous grace, “the psalm demonstrates that God is to be praised as both Creator and Savior of His people”:
The God of Abraham Praise – Hymn 11

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org/Search and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

10: Lessons of the Past – Teaching Plan

March 2, 2024 By admin

Key Thought: Some of the psalms are called historical psalms. They help us see our lives as a part of the history of God’s people and claim the past as our own.
March 9, 2024

1. Have a volunteer read Psalm 105.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. How should we, as Seventh-day Adventists, see ourselves in this line of people from Abraham on? What lessons should we learn from this history?
  3. Personal Application: What lessons have you learned, or should have learned, from your past mistakes? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “.Why should we study the Old Testament and the history of the Jews? We are New Testament Christians and Jewish history is a thing of the past and doesn’t apply to Christians today.” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Psalm 80.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. How are God’s people portrayed, and what great hope do they plead for?
  3. Personal Application: How have you experienced repentance and a return to God? Share your thoughts
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “I think I’ve done too much bad stuff for God to forgive me and save me. I don’t know if I could ever believe that I could be forgiven or change my life.” How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read Psalm 135.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What historical events are highlighted here? What lessons does the psalmist draw from them?
  3. Personal Application: How can we make sure that we don’t have idols in our lives? Why might idolatry be wasier to do that we realize? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “How has God lead you in the past? Is it easy to forget or ignore the lessons of the past? Why is it important to remember how God has guided and worked for you in the past?” How would you respond to your neighbor?

4. Have a volunteer read Psalm 106.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What historical events and their lessons are highlighted in this psalm?
  3. Personal Application: How often do we remember God’s works and don’t wait to ask for God’s direction when we make decisions? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”Ministry of Healing, p. 148).

Psalms – Lesson 10.Lessons of the Past | Sabbath School with Pastor Mark Finley

March 2, 2024 By admin

Series PSALMS with Pastor Mark Finley  |
Lesson 10.Lessons of the Past  |
Looking Back and Gaining Insight: Lessons from the Past
Lesson 10 takes us through a profound reflection on the past and invites us to learn from the lessons of history. Through a series of Psalms – Psalm 78, 105, 106, 80, and 135 – we explore God’s unwavering faithfulness to His people, despite their disobedience and failures. These Psalms remind us of the importance of remembering God’s deeds in the past, praising Him, and turning away from our sins. They also illustrate God’s unparalleled sovereignty in history and invite us to remain faithful to Him and worship Him alone. This lesson encourages us to maintain confidence in God’s actions amidst the tumult of history.
Memory Text: Psalm 78:3.4 – “Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.”
Content:
10.1 The Lord’s Unstoppable Faithfulness

God’s Steadfast Hand Through the Ages
God’s unwavering faithfulness, as described in Psalm 78, reminds us of the central role God plays in the history of His people. The Psalm highlights three crucial historical epochs: the Exodus from Egypt, the settlement of Canaan, and the time of David. Through these retrospects, God’s tireless faithfulness is revealed despite His people’s constant unfaithfulness. The repeated lessons Asaph draws from each period emphasize the importance of trusting in God and remaining faithful to His covenant. The Psalm admonishes us to recognize the mistakes of the past and not to repeat them but to trust in God’s faithfulness and grace. Ultimately, the Psalm teaches us the limitations of human endeavors without the foundation of trust in God’s faithfulness.
10.2 Remembering History and the Praise of God
The Narrative of Faithfulness: God’s Hand in Israel’s History
Psalm 105 recalls the significant historical events that have shaped the relationship between God and His people Israel. The focus is on God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants, as well as the ways in which God has fulfilled His promises. Unlike Psalm 78, this Psalm does not emphasize the faults of the people but narrates the story to underscore God’s faithfulness and guidance. Through the history of the patriarchs, God’s patience and the reward for their faith are highlighted, encouraging us to follow their example. Psalm 105 shows that knowing about God’s actions in the past helps us praise Him and trust that He will remain faithful in the future.
10.3 Remembering History and Repentance
Reflecting on the Past, Shaping the Future: Lessons from Psalm 106
Psalm 106 reminds us of the significant events in Israel’s history and emphasizes God’s unwavering faithfulness to His people despite their sins. It shows the consequences of the rebellion and disobedience of Israel’s forefathers, which ultimately led to exile. The Psalm was most likely written when the people were in Babylon or after their return, and it calls the people to learn from history and turn to God in repentance. Despite human failure, God’s love and grace ultimately triumph over their sins. This Psalm reminds us that personal experience of God’s grace enables us to change our own story and turn to Him.
10.4 The Parable of the Lord’s Vine
Returning to the Origin: A Spiritual Journey through Psalm 80
Psalm 80 portrays Israel as a vineyard that God liberated from the oppression of Egypt and led into the promised land. Despite its election, Israel suffers under God’s wrath as the vineyard is corrupted. The Psalmist expresses astonishment at God’s restraint and pleads for the restoration of His people. The repeated blessing from Numbers 6:22–27 is used to emphasize hope in God’s grace and salvation when the people turn from their ways and return to Him. This Psalm encourages us to turn away from our sin and return to God to experience His restoration and blessing.
10.5 The Lord’s Supremacy in History
The Unshakable Rule of God: A Reflection on Psalm 135
Psalm 135 reminds God’s people of God’s unparalleled supremacy in history. It emphasizes God’s acts of creation, the redemption of Israel from Egypt, and the conquest of the Promised Land. Israel’s election by God is based on His sovereign will and should lead to humility. The Psalmist calls for recognizing God as the sole Savior and Creator and not relying on idols. Psalm 135 reminds us that our worship belongs solely to God, the sovereign Lord over history and creation.
10.6 Summary
The Lessons of the Past: An Invitation to Faithfulness and Worship
The lessons from the past, as depicted in Psalms 78, 105, 106, 80, and 135, highlight God’s unwavering faithfulness to His people despite their constant unfaithfulness. These Psalms remind us of the importance of remembering history and praising God for His faithfulness and guidance. They also show the need for repentance and turning back to God when we deviate from His ways. Despite human failure, God’s love and grace ultimately triumph over our sins. By remembering God’s deeds in the past and acknowledging His supremacy, we are encouraged to remain faithful to Him and worship Him alone.
