I’ve always believed that there is some kind of satisfaction continuum on which one lives their life. Doom and despair are at one end and joy and exhilaration are at the other. Most of us live somewhere in the middle with our negatives only swinging as low as tedium or boredom and our highs rating somewhere around contentment or excitement but not often reaching much higher than that. How can one spend more time at the higher end of that spectrum and experience real joy? A quick survey of Jesus’ use of this word shows that it is closely related to soul-winning. Those who use their talents to serve the Lord enter into His joy (Matthew 25:21, 23). Heaven itself rejoices when one sinner returns to the Lord, when one lost sheep or son returns to the fold (Luke 15:7, 10). Efforts we make for Jesus that result in another's conversion are celebrated with joy. This joy does not have to wait for someone’s ultimate redemption; there can be joy all along the journey as one sees another’s understanding open as we open the scriptures to them. We can experience joy when we see someone’s skepticism turn to curiosity, when their curiosity turns to interest, when their interest turns to enlightenment and their enlightenment to a life-changing passion.
