9: Jesus, The Perfect Sacrifice – Teaching Plan

February 21, 2022 By admin

Key Thought: Christ reconciled us to Himself to satisfy the claims of the broken law and bridge the gulf which sin has made.
February 26, 2022

1. Have a volunteer read Genesis 15:6-21.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. What does this text teach us about God’s covenant?
  3. Personal Application: What did walking between the cut-up animals have to do with God’s covenant with Israel? Why did only God walk through the animals? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “That promise was for Israel to receive the land of their enemies. That covenant has nothing to do with Christians today.” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 7:27, 10:10..

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. How is Jesus’ sacrifice described in these passages?
  3. Personal Application: How are we to present ourselves a living sacrifice to God, which is our reasonable service? Share your thoughts
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “What merit do people get by flogging themselves, having themselves nailed to a cross, sacrificing chickens, locking themselves away from people for long periods, or fasting for days at a time?” How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 9:22-28.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
  2. What does this passage tell us about the work of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary?
  3. Personal Application: What would you face if you have to face the just punishment for your sins? How does that help you understand what Christ has done for you? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states: “I don’t think Jesus is doing anything in heaven. Everything ended at the cross. There is no judgment for believers. Jesus offered His blood once forever – so He has no need to be our priest.” How would you respond to your relative?

4. Have a volunteer read Romans 3:21-26, 5:8.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What does redemption at the cross for the forgiveness of sins reveal about God and His character?
  3. Personal Application: Why do the cross and the ministry of Jesus for us suggest we should look confidently toward the judgment with humility and repentance,? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”Ministry of Healing, p. 148).

Amen!(0)

9: Jesus, the Perfect Sacrifice – Singing With Inspiration

February 21, 2022 By admin

The titles of the thirteen Sabbaths of study this quarter give us two hymns to use as the themes
Hymn 593 – In Times Like These and
Hymn 177 – Jesus, Your Blood and Righteousness.

On Sabbath afternoon Paul simply called the gospel “the word of the cross” which points us to
Hymn 159 – The Old Rugged Cross.

Sunday gives us the stark reminder that
Jesus Paid It All – Hymn 184. God’s own sacrifice is complete as in
Hymn 157 – Go To Dark Gethsemane, showing us
The Wonders of Redeeming Love – Hymn 179 from Jesus. Hallelujah!!! I am
Redeemed! – Hymn 337/338
. Yes,
By Christ Redeemed – Hymn 402. Jesus paid the perfect sacrifice for all who accept.

The cross (Wednesday) shows the enormous cost for our redemption:
Hymn 312 – Near the Cross. I am forgiven and will
Come With Joy – Hymn 400 to my Saviour, because
Jesus What a Friend of Sinners – Hymn 187, all because
There Is a Green Hill Far Away – Hymn 164 (verse 3).

Jesus, Your Blood and Righteousness – Hymn 177 is standing and making “an effectual plea in our behalf” (Thursday).

Friday finalises with the fact that Calvary covers all our sins:
Hymn 476 – Burdens Are Lifted At Calvary,
Hymn 317 – Lead Me to Calvary,
Hymn 109 – Marvelous Grace,
Hymn 159 – The Old Rugged Cross, and then
I Will Sing of Jesus’ Love – Hymn 183.

We are bound for The Promised Land! Hallelujah!! –
Hymn 620 – On Jordan’s Stormy Banks. Come, Lord Jesus, come – very soon.

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing, but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Amen!(0)

ATTS PRESENTS: How Headship Theology Distorts the Gospel

February 20, 2022 By admin

20 February 2022  | “Headship theology belongs to an old dispensation in which man plays God and ironically erodes human worth and dignity; for to diminish one half of humanity is to also diminish the other half. We have seen the violence that has been perpetuated by this headship theology of male entitlement to female […] Source: https://atoday.org/atts-presents-how-headship-theology-distorts-the-gospel/

Monday: Diverse Kinds of Sacrifices

February 20, 2022 By admin

Jesus’ death provided forgiveness, or remission, for our sins. The remission of our sins, however, involves much more than the cancellation of the penalty for our transgression of the covenant. It involves other elements as important. That is why the Israelite sacrificial system had five different kinds of sacrifices. Each was necessary to express the richness of the meaning of the cross of Christ.

Read Ephesians 3:14-19. What was the prayer request of Paul in behalf of believers?

The holocaust offering (or burnt offering) required that the whole animal be consumed on the altar (Leviticus 1:1-17). It represented Jesus, whose life was consumed for us. Expiation required Jesus’ total commitment to us. Even though He was equal with God, Jesus “emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:5-8, ESV).

The grain offering was a gift of gratitude for God’s provision of sustenance for His people (Leviticus 2:1-16). It also represents Jesus, “the bread of life” (John 6:35, John 6:48), through whom we have eternal life.

The peace or fellowship offering implied a communal meal with friends and family to celebrate the well-being provided by God (Leviticus 3:1-17). It represented Christ, whose sacrifice provided peace for us (Isaiah 53:5, Romans 5:1, Ephesians 2:14). It also emphasizes that we need to participate in Jesus’ sacrifice by eating of His flesh and drinking of His blood (John 6:51-56).

The sin or purification offering provided expiation for sins (Leviticus 4:1-5:13). This sacrifice emphasized the role of the blood of the animal — which represented its life — to provide redemption from sins (Leviticus 17:11) and pointed forward to the blood of Jesus who redeems us from our sins (Matthew 26:28, Romans 3:25, Hebrews 9:14).

The guilt or reparation offering (Leviticus 5:14-6:7) provided forgiveness in cases where reparation or restitution was possible. It tells us that God’s forgiveness does not free us from the responsibility to provide reparation or restitution, where possible, to those whom we have wronged.

The sanctuary sacrifices teach us that the experience of salvation is more than just accepting Jesus as our Substitute. We also need to “feed” on Him, share His benefits with others, and provide reparation to those whom we have wronged.

Sunday: Why Were Sacrifices Needed?

February 19, 2022 By admin

Hebrews 9:15 explains that the death of Jesus as a sacrifice had the purpose of providing “redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant,” in order that the people of God might “receive the promise of the eternal inheritance” (NASB).

In the ancient Near East, a covenant between two persons or nations was a serious matter. It involved an exchange of promises under oath. It implied the assumption that the gods would punish those who broke the oath. Often, these covenants were ratified through the sacrifice of an animal.

For example, when God made a covenant with Abraham, the ceremony involved cutting animals in half (Genesis 15:6-21). The parties would walk between the parts as an acknowledgment that those animals represented the fate of the party who broke the covenant. Significantly, only God walked between the animals, for the purpose of communicating to Abraham that He will not break His promise.

Compare Genesis 15:6-21 and Jeremiah 34:8-22. What do these texts teach about the covenant?

The covenant with God gave Israel access to the Promised Land as their inheritance. It involved, however, a set of commandments and the sprinkling of blood upon an altar. This sprinkling implied the destiny of the party who broke the covenant. This is why Hebrews says that “without the shedding of blood there is no remission [of sins]” (Hebrews 9:22, literal translation).

When Israel broke the covenant, God faced a painful dilemma. The covenant demanded the death of the transgressors, but God loved His people. If God should simply look the other way or refuse to punish the transgressors, His commandments would never be enforceable, and this world would descend into chaos.

The Son of God, however, offered Himself as a Substitute. He died in our place so that we “may receive the promised eternal inheritance” (Hebrews 9:15, Hebrews 9:26, ESV; Romans 3:21-26). That is, He was going to uphold the sanctity of His law while at the same time saving those who broke that law. And He could do this only through the cross.

How can we see here why the law is so central to the gospel message?
