08: From the Stormy Sea to the Clouds of Heaven – Discussion Starters

February 17, 2020 By admin

Story 299341728

  1. The vision of Daniel 7. The vision of Daniel 7 expands on Daniel’s vision presented earlier in Daniel 2. Your lesson guide calls this vision “amazing,” so be on the alert for what makes this vision, not just interesting or enlightening, but “highly symbolic” and descriptive of amazing events that will take place “soon” on the horizon of time.
  2. Four animals. The lion. What city, empire, or country does the lion in this vision represent? Babylon, of course! Since you knew that the lion represents Babylon, what does the bear represent? That’s right. The Medo-Persian Empire. And the leopard? The Greek Empire. And now the surliest, meanest beast of them all. It doesn’t look like any animal. So who is it?
  3. The little horn. This strange creature, Number 4 in the display, seems to emerge from pagan Rome, and as surely as we are reading about it, what three things does this entity accomplish—or try to do? How long does he (or it) have? And for how long does the little horn continue as a part of Rome? Does the reading of this prophecy and its explanation move you to pray to God for protection and guidance?
  4. The court was seated. Now there is a judgment scene. The court is in session. Who is being judged? When does this judgment begin? How does the Day of Atonement fit into the drama of this end-time call to justice? What is the purpose of the pre-Advent judgment in heaven? What does the cross of Christ have to do with the final judgment day?
  5. The coming of the Son of Man. Is it a puzzle to you in any way that the Son of Man is Jesus? The note states that Daniel 7:13 does not refer solely to the second coming as we have imagined it but to the restoration of true worship. How does the false religious leader (the papacy) try to place a human leader as the mediator between God and humanity? Does this attempt succeed?
  6. The holy ones of the Most High. Do you long to be one of the “holy ones” of the Most High? When does the final persecution of the saints begin and end? Can any effort to persecute and destroy God’s people win the battle? How is the victory achieved? Explain the importance to you and me of our refusal to be separate from the love of God. How can we be sure we have the Saviour on our side?

NOTES from the lesson guide. Suggestion: use this passage as a discussion guide at the end (or beginning) of your class.

Look again at all the characteristics of the little horn power that arises from, and remains part of, the fourth beast, Rome. What power alone arose out of pagan Rome many centuries ago and, besides having persecuted God’s people, remains in existence today? Why should this clear identification help protect us from speculation about its identity, including the idea that the little horn refers to a pagan Greek king who disappeared from history more than a century and a half before the first advent of Jesus? How should these clear identifying marks also protect us from the belief that the little horn is some future power yet to arise?

Amen!(0)

Bringing the Community Together

February 17, 2020 By admin

Smiles all around from”full” guests at a monthly Neighbourhood Pancake Breakfast.

The Mountain Andrews All Nations Seventh-day Adventist Church seeks to be a blessing to their community of North End in Winnipeg, Man. Thus our outreach as church members stems from the concept that the primary need of each person is to find God through Jesus Christ.
During the summers church members walk the streets distributing faith-based inspirational materials such as books, magazines, Bible study enrolment cards, and invitation flyers for public evangelism. All this effort is accompanied with much prayer and with hope that many in our neighbourhood would be open to know more about Jesus. Our observation is that most people remain distant.
To overcome that distance, our church has been doing what Jesus did and going to where the people are and ministering to them. The Native Ministry Team arranged for a meeting with a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in which she informed us of the issues and needs of the community. One need is healthful food for poverty-stricken individuals. High substance abuse and drug addiction call for a group recovery program. Vacation Bible School (VBS) is needed to minister to the many children with little to do in the summer.
Teams from Native Ministries, Children’s Ministries, and Women’s Ministries, and other volunteers are working together for two specific outreach activities.
First, the VBS events in the two summers 2018 and 2019 succeeded in reaching more than 95 children from the community: 55 percent non-Adventist and 45 percent from Adventist homes.
Second, regular Neighbourhood Pancake Breakfasts were held on Sundays once each month, beginning in April 2019 (omitting July, during campmeeting). The numbers attending ranged from 20 to 140, with the total served being 350.
We are encouraged by people’s responses as the number of attendees from the community grows. One man said, “Thank you very much for the Neighbourhood Pancake Breakfast. This church has not only blessed its members, but the community people as well.”

            An
elderly man sent a three-page handwritten letter, from which are a few quotes, “Thank
you for caring … We love you … Food is love, bringing people together … We
are searchers, seekers, and finders …We search for the kindness of strangers …
You exist, you are here, we are alive, you reach out to people … You are the
sunshine that lights other people’s lives … You love our people, you are part
of the Canadian dream … You have made a difference in our spiritual lives.”

            Two
men approached Pastor Neil Tagarao after the meal on BBQ Day on Aug. 4. One man
said, “Thank you very much for this
BBQ Day. It is becoming a community fellowship. You see, if not for this event,
the two of us would not be reconciled. I have been wrongly suspecting my
neighbour of dumping snow on my yard, only to find out that it was not him. The
guilty person is already in jail. So, in learning the truth, we are now friends
again. Thank you so much for this event that brings the community together.”

            That
same day (Aug. 4), a couple came to Tagarao and expressed their interest in
Bible study, and eagerness to join the First Nation Adventist Training (FNAT)
at Camp Hope, B.C.

While our church is reaching out to the community through providing food and fellowship for their physical and social needs, we also continually offer material for their spiritual needs in our sanctuary. A table at the entrance of the church displays free books, magazines, and DVDs. We pray that the many who take these items will discover the most essential food in life—Jesus, the Bread of life (see John 6:32, 33.)

Christ Calls for Unity

February 17, 2020 By admin

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. John 17:21.
We each need the help we can receive from other minds. God will work in other minds than ours. The various gifts given to different ones are to blend for the “perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12)….
The Lord Jesus Christ will heal our infirmities and our weaknesses. He owns us. We are His by creation and by redemption. We must all be united in Him. He is the only source of healing. All restoring power comes from Him. He has opened a fountain “to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.” He gives each one an invitation to come and be healed, and to drink of the water of life. Let us not trust in ourselves, but in Jesus.
There will always be obstacles before us, but we are to follow our Leader, and meet our difficulties unitedly, hand in hand. There is only one way to heaven. We must walk in the footsteps of Jesus, doing His works, even as He did the works of His Father. We must study His ways, not man’s ways; we must obey His will, not our own. Walk carefully. Do not go ahead of Christ. Make no move without consulting your Leader. Ask in humble prayer, and “ye shall receive.” He is the Way, the Truth, the Life.
Read and study carefully the prayer that Christ offered just before His trial, recorded in the seventeenth chapter of John. Follow its teachings, and you will be brought into unity. Our only hope of reaching heaven is to be one with Christ, and then, in and through Christ, we shall be one with one another. No one is called to walk alone. In Christ life and immortality are brought to light. He has opened the way to the kingdom of heaven to those who believe in Him, but He assigns to no one a path different to that which all must travel. He calls for unity, and unity we must have. God asks us to sink self in Christ. For the natural man this is not easy. But through the power of the incarnation of Christ, God manifest in the flesh, the strength of God is revealed in gentleness and beauty. To “as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.” By this power we may overcome our evil tendencies and so modify our imperfect dispositions that the will of God may be fulfilled in us.—Letter 79, May 7, 1903, to J. A. Burden and wife. (Elder Burden was engaged in sanitarium work in Australia.)

Dear Friends,
Since he was in his teen years, Ron has had an interest in astronomy. When we lived out in the country in Washington state, he bought a used telescope. The skies were spectacular on cold, clear nights, so he would bundle up and spend many hours looking at planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies.
When the atmosphere was not good for stargazing, he would read astronomy magazines by the hour. One day, he showed me an article that explained how a reflecting telescope works. The picture I remember the clearest was one of several men polishing a huge mirror for some observatory. Ron explained that in order to reflect the image perfectly, ever flaw had to be rubbed out.
How often we feel as if we are a mirror being polished as our Maker rubs and polishes our character to remove our flaws. Many times during this process, we feel as did David when he sang, “LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people.” Ps 3
The experiences that we must pass through to make our reflection of His character clearer, are not pleasant. Our Loving Saviour rubs and polishes us until we are molded into His likeness. He says, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” Rev 3:19 “Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.” Isa 48:10
Paul advises, “My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Heb. 12:5-11
Through these trials that our Merciful Creator uses to polish us, we become a light to the world, reflecting the True Light even more clearly than a telescope mirror reflects the light of some distant star. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” John 8:12; Mat 5:14-16
May we “shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life.” Phil 2:15,16 May we say like Job, “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” Job 23:10 May Daniel’s prophecy be fulfilled in us, “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever” is my prayer. Dan 12:3
