God’s Work—Our Commitment

November 11, 2019 By admin

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:19.
However large may be a man’s claim to knowledge, to wisdom, unless he is under the teaching of the Holy Spirit, he is exceedingly ignorant of spiritual things. He may handle truth in such a way that little understanding is imparted to his inner heart life….
Place your entire dependence on the One who is able to keep the souls committed to His trust, able to imbue them with His Spirit, able to fill them with unselfish love for one another, thus enabling them to bear witness that He has sent His Son into the world to save sinners….
The root of all true self-sacrifice is an affection for the Lord Jesus so strong that it makes the wearing of His yoke easy and pleasant, and leads men to choose to learn His meekness and lowliness….
God’s servants have one common work. Their aim is to be to convert people to the pure truth of the Word of God. They are not to attach men to themselves, so that they will echo everything they may say, and carry out all the suggestions they may make. UL 85.5
Christ is the foundation of every true church. All who are brought to a new faith are to be established on Him. The plain, simple truths of the gospel are to be kept before minds. Christ crucified as the atonement for sin is the great central truth of the gospel, round which all truths cluster. To this great truth all other truths are tributary.
All truths, rightly understood, derive their value and importance from their connection with this truth. The apostle Paul makes this fact stand out in royal dignity. He calls the minds of all teachers of the Word to the importance of pointing souls to Christ as the only means of salvation. “God forbid that I should glory,” he says, “save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Galatians 6:14)….
Let not man seek to fasten minds to himself. God Himself is the Founder of His church, and we have His unalterable promise that His presence and protection will be given to His faithful ones, who walk in His counsel. To the end of time, Christ is to be first. He is the source of life and strength and righteousness and holiness. All this He is to those who wear His yoke, and learn of Him how to be meek and lowly. He will not tolerate self-exaltation.—Letter 39, March 12, 1902, to Elder E. E. Franke, an evangelist.

Dear Friends,
Little children copy all that they see and hear. To their surprise, new parents soon find that the very way in which they deal with their little one is the way that child deals with her toy “children” or pets. It is a humbling experience to hear your words and attitudes coming out of your child’s mouth. How important that we lead our children in the right path. How vital that we guard what they see and hear on television. Their future happiness depends on the example we give them.
So it is with all of us. We are constantly exposed to many examples from friends, family, the media, that mold us and change us almost imperceptibly. Our only safety lies in following our True Example, the Lord Jesus Christ. Copying Him in all things will transform us as He would have us to be. Peter tells us, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” 1 Pet 2:21-25
Jesus prayed, “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” John 17:4 Just as the Son revealed His Father’s love to a perishing world, so we are to glorify Him by our good works and finish His work by spreading His message of deliverance to a world steeped in sin. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Eph 2:10 Peter reminds us, “ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” 1 Peter 2:9
Paul gives the key to showing forth His praises, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Tim 3:16-17 Through God’s Holy Word, we find His will for our life. By daily Bible study we become changed into His likeness. “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2Co 3:18 As we meditate upon His precepts, we are filled with love for our Great Creator. And the more we love, the more we want to please Him in all that we do or say or think. Jesus’ words, “as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” take on new meaning. Luke 6:31 The more we love Him, the more we want to share that love with others, the more we will want to see them saved, not only for their sake, but because they are precious in His sight.
May we declare as did David, “my mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day.” Ps 71:15 May we pray, “Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. Psa 86:11,12 May we “with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Rom 15:6

Monday: Beginning of Prayer

November 10, 2019 By admin

The response of the people to the Bible reading was a long prayer that recounted the goodness of God in contrast to the history of the Israel’s faithlessness. One can observe that the reply is more like a sermon than a prayer, because almost every verse has a parallel somewhere in the Bible.

Read Nehemiah 9:4-8. What are the main topics the prayer focused on in these beginning verses, and why?

Nehemiah’s Prayer

In the first part of the prayer, the people bless God, and specifically His name. In the Hebrew culture, a name was not just what people called someone, but it gave a person his/her identity. Thus, the praise of God’s name is significant because it demonstrates to the world that this is a name worthy of praise and honor. This is the name of the Creator of the Universe. The prayer begins with worship to God as the Creator and as the One who “preserves” everything (Neh. 9:6 see also Col. 1:16-17). The word “preserves” comes from a Hebrew verb that means to “keep alive”.

The One who created everything is the One who chose Abraham, a human being, who was not in any way special other than that “his heart” was “faithful”. Abraham may seem to have lacked faith on many occasions, but when asked to give up his son, he didn’t falter (see Genesis 22:1-24). He learned to be faithful — not overnight, but over his long walk with God. In Hebrew thinking, the “heart” refers to the mind. In other words, Abraham developed faithfulness in thought and action and was acknowledged for it by God.

The first few phrases of the prayer focus on God as 1. Creator, 2. Preserver, and 3. Promise Keeper. The people first remind themselves of who God is: He is the faithful One who has created us, preserves us, and always keeps His promises to us. Having that in mind helps us to keep our own lives in perspective and to learn to trust Him even in the most difficult of situations, when it might seem that He is distant from us and unconcerned with our challenges.

Why is the doctrine of God as our Creator so central to our faith? After all, what other teaching is so important compared to this one, in which we are commanded by God to spend one-seventh of our lives every week in remembering Him as our Creator?
Amen!(3)

When the Church Leaves You

November 10, 2019 By admin

by Mark B. Johnson  |  10 November 2019  | I have always been an Adventist. When our denomination’s current president was a child playing on the banks of the Nile River in Egypt, I was born upstream in an Adventist mission hospital in Ethiopia. My family was a “real” Adventist family. Medical missions, vegetarian diets, […] Source: https://atoday.org/when-the-church-leaves-you/
