The spirits were furious with Ranja 's decision to follow Jesus and forewarned her of dire consequences. Ranja , nevertheless, chose to stand by her choice. The spirits made good on their threat, and her house was consumed by fire, leaving her with nothing. Her neighbors, irate and fearful, accused her of bringing misfortune upon herself and the entire village. The spirits tormented her relentlessly, their power so overwhelming that Ranja contemplated surrendering to them and resuming her life as a witch.
