The New Creation

January 2, 2023 By admin

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Genesis 1:31.

How beautiful the earth was when it came from the Creator’s hand! God presented before the universe a world in which even His all-seeing eye could find no spot or stain, no defect or crookedness. Each part of His creation occupied the place assigned it and answered the purpose for which it was created. Like the parts of some great machine, part fitted to part, and all was in perfect harmony…. There was no disease … and the vegetable kingdom was without taint of corruption. God looked upon the work of His hands wrought out by Christ and pronounced it “very good.” He looked upon a perfect world, in which there was no trace of sin, no imperfection.

But a change came. Satan tempted Adam, and he fell. He who in heaven had become disloyal and had been cast out made lying reports of God to the beings He had created, and they listened to his reports and believed his lie. And sin entered the world, and death by sin.—Letter 23, 1903 (see also The Review and Herald, July 21, 1904).

When Christ saw that there was no human being able to be humanity’s intercessor, He Himself entered the fierce conflict and battled with Satan. The First Begotten of God was the only one who could liberate those who by Adam’s sin had been brought in subjection to Satan.

The Son of God gave Satan every opportunity to try all his arts upon Him. The enemy had tempted the angels in heaven, and afterward the first Adam. Adam fell, and Satan supposed he could succeed in ensnaring Christ after He assumed humanity. All the fallen host looked upon this engagement as an opportunity to gain the supremacy over Christ. They had longed for a chance to show their enmity against God. When the lips of Christ were sealed in death, Satan and his angels imagined that they had obtained the victory….

In the death struggle the Son of God could rely only upon His heavenly Father. All was by faith. He Himself was a ransom, a gift, given for the freeing of the captives. By His own arm He has brought salvation to humanity; but at what a cost to Himself!—Manuscript 125, 1901 (The Upward Look, 357).

Prayer Requests

—-Please pray for my son Josh. May his pain turn into a need for you. My heart is breaking for him! Louisw
—- Asking for prayer for the mother of four of my grandchildren. Her name is Ana. She is deep into the occult. She has threatened to have me killed many times. She has also made plans to kill two of my sons. My son went over there on Xmas day to see his kids. There was an argument and as my son was walking out of her house holding some of his belongings, she hit him in the back of his head with a hammer. I cannot turn her in. She seems to be able to find out the names of anyone who turns her in to any agency and then they are doomed to her revenge. She really needs prayer. Put her on the prayer group and my grandchildren and son also. Thank you very much. She told me that if I had her prosecuted it would be one of the last things I would ever do. So, I didn’t follow through with going to court against her. I believe it was true. CC

Dear Friends,

When I talked with Esther on the phone some years ago when she was still in college, I knew something was upsetting her. After a few pointed questions, she told me that the first story in her literature book was making God out to be worse than the heathen deities and made them heroes. It sickened her to read such blasphemy. She prayed for wisdom to know what to do. She decided to drop the class and take another one which would still meet the requirement. One other student did the same.

Whether our problem is a small one or an overwhelmingly large one, God invites us, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee” Jer 33:3 Jesus assures us, “If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.” Luke 17:6 He says, “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” John 14:14 I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them t hat ask him?” Luke 11:9-13

James gives another dimension to our prayer being answered, “let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.” James 1:6, 7 John explains, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” 1 John 5:14 Think of it! The Great Creator of the Universe is willing to answer our prayer of faith!

May we come to God, knowing that He loves us with an “everlasting love.” Jer 31:3 May we fulfill the conditions to answered prayer, that God, Who longs to give us that which we ask, may work mightily for us. May we remember to praise God when He answers our petitions is my prayer.

A Seat Upon His Throne

December 24, 2022 By admin

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Revelation 3:21.

We can overcome. Yes; fully, entirely. Jesus died to make a way of escape for us, that we might overcome every fault, resist every temptation, and sit down at last with Him in His throne.

It is our privilege to have faith and salvation. The power of God has not decreased. It would be just as freely bestowed now as formerly; but the church have lost their faith to claim, their energy to wrestle, as did Jacob, crying, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me” (Genesis 32:26). Enduring faith has been dying away. It must be revived in the hearts of God’s people. They must claim the blessing. Faith, living faith, always leads upward to God and glory; unbelief, downward to darkness and death.

Many are so absorbed in their worldly cares and perplexities that they have little time to pray, and feel but little interest in prayer. They may observe the form of worship, but the spirit of true supplication is lacking. Such have departed widely from the Pattern. Jesus our example was much in prayer; and oh, how earnest, how fervent were His petitions! If He, the beloved Son of God, was moved to such earnestness, such agony, in our behalf, how much more need that we, who are dependent upon Heaven for all our strength, have our whole souls stirred to wrestle with God.

We should not be satisfied until every known sin is confessed, then it is our privilege and duty to believe that God accepts us. We must not wait for others to press through the darkness and obtain the victory for us to enjoy. Such enjoyment will not be lasting. God must be served from principle instead of from feeling. Morning and evening we should obtain the victory for ourselves, in our own families. Our daily labor should not keep us from this. We must take time to pray, and as we pray, believe that God hears us. We may not at all times feel the immediate answer, but then it is that faith is tried. We are proved to see whether we will trust in God, whether we have living, abiding faith.—The Review and Herald, September 4, 1883.

Dear Friends,

What a time of wonder Christmastime was for me when I was a child. We always had a huge tree that would reach nearly to the ceiling and my grandparents lived in a house with very tall ceilings! I always went with my mother when she would pick out the tree. She would spend a lot of time looking for a perfectly shaped one. She was an artist and only a perfectly proportioned tree would suit her. Then we would drag it home through the snow.

When the ornaments were brought from the attic, where they had been stored all year, I would admire each one. I was not allowed to touch them as they were very old, but I would stand there and look. I spent hours studying each item that had been placed on that tree. They do not make Christmas decorations like those anymore. There were glass bells painted with scrollwork of various colors, balls glitter painted with many designs, delicate ornaments shaped like birds, candles, streetlights, icicles, and snowflakes. My mother would carefully arrange them all until the tree became a work of art under her artistic hand.

As I think of the delight I had looking at those Christmas ornaments, I think of the delight we should get reading God’s Holy Word. Think of it! We have in our hands a letter from the Creator of the Universe! He has put everything in its pages that we need to know in order to obtain salvation. “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.” Deut 29:29 “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.” 1 Cor 15:1,2 “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Tim 2:15

Jesus tells us, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39 From the first chapter of Genesis to the last chapter of Revelation the love of God is revealed. We read of the One Who was willing to give “his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 We learn of a Saviour “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Phil 2:6-8

As we read God’s Word over and over again, we discover new things that we had not noticed before. Truths that were always there, but the Holy Spirit waits until we are ready to receive them before He drives them home to our mind. We experience the truth of the parable Jesus taught, “Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” Matt 13:52 The Bible is God’s voice speaking of His love and care for us! What joy we have as the Holy Spirit instructs us in the way of the Lord!

May we take even greater delight over each discovery He reveals to us in His Holy Word than I did over those Christmas ornaments of long ago.

Victory on the Battlefield

December 17, 2022 By admin

I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. John 17:14, 15.

The Christian has duties to do in the world, and God holds him responsible for their faithful performance. He is not to confine himself in monastic walls, nor to avoid all association with worldlings. It is true that his principles will be put to the severest test, and he will be pained by what his eyes see and his ears hear. But he must not, by becoming familiar with these sights and sounds, learn to love them. By association with the world, we incline to catch the spirit of the world, and to adopt their customs, tastes, and preferences. But we are commanded, “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters” (2 Corinthians 6:17, 18).

Never let the world say that worldlings and Christ’s followers are alike in their tastes and pursuits; for God has drawn a line between His people and the world. This line of demarcation is broad and deep and clear; it is not so blended with the world that it is not discernible. “The Lord knoweth them that are his” (2 Timothy 2:19). “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20).

It is only by watching unto prayer, and the exercise of living faith, that the Christian can preserve his integrity in the midst of the temptations that Satan brings to bear upon him. But “whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4). Talk to your heart constantly the language of faith:“Jesus said He would receive me, and I believe His word. I will praise Him; I will glorify His name.” Satan will be close by your side to suggest that you do not feel any joy. Answer him, “‘This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.’ I have everything to be glad of; for I am a child of God. I am trusting in Jesus. The law of God is in my heart; none of my steps shall slide.”—The Signs of the Times, May 15, 1884.

Dear Friends,

Some years ago, Ronnie Jay and a friend of Esther’s went out for a hike in a nearby wilderness area. The wind was bitterly cold but that did not deter them. Ronnie Jay had his camera so he could get photos of the various animals inhabiting the area. He especially wanted pictures of porcupines. As they were walking and looking up in the trees, he spotted six or seven bald eagles up in some nearby trees. As he was focusing his camera, the friend loudly exclaimed, “There’s more!” At that, the eagles all flew away.

Just as the eagles were chased away by the sound of a human voice, so we can so easily chase away someone who is beginning to be interested in the good news of salvation. How many times, well-meaning members have spoiled that interest by their critical words or disapproving looks. What a tragedy when those who were turning toward the Saviour turn away because of our words or actions.

Our Dear Saviour, Who draws us to Himself with everlasting kindness, (Jer 31:3) wants us to be so careful as we deal with the baby Christians who are taking their first tottering steps toward Him. As we deal with those who are beginning to have an interest in our Dear Saviour’s message for these last days, it is good to remember that we, too, have needed time to change from what we were before we accepted Him to what He desires us to be. We, too, are walking on the upward path. The warning Jesus gave His disciples of old, surely apply in this situation as well, “At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences!” Matt 18:1-7

May we keep in mind in our dealings with others the words of our Kind Master, “Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” Matt 12:36, 37

Closer to Jesus

December 14, 2022 By admin

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. James 4:7, 8.
When temptation comes upon us, we need spiritual discernment, that we may detect Satan’s agency, and draw close to Jesus. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Every moment it is necessary to fight the good fight of faith; for doubt must be resisted, and faith must be encouraged. In temptation, inclination must be overruled by reason. Self will clamor for indulgence, but inclination must be resisted, and temptation overcome.
The Lord has given warnings, He has presented principles that it is necessary for every Christian to heed, and bring into his practical life. Those who pass on in indifference to the light and warning which God has been pleased to give will grow more and more egotistical and self-sufficient. Those who do not place their dependence upon God will certainly be overthrown by the enemy. Satan is working by every conceivable device to keep in his own ranks those who claim to be on the Lord’s side. He can blind their eyes until they will call light darkness, and darkness light….
Though the light of God is shining in more distinct rays than ever before, and will shine more and more clearly as we near the close of earth’s history, those who will be able to discern truth from error will be men who are often upon their knees, seeking wisdom from God. The bright beams of the Sun of righteousness can alone reveal the numerous and varied plottings of the enemy. The wicked one is at work with all deceivableness of unrighteousness; and while we are not to keep our eyes upon the powers of darkness, we cannot be ignorant of their devices.
But our faith must center in Jesus Christ. Looking unto Him, clinging to His strength as sufficient for every emergency, our heart joins His heart, our life is knit by hidden links to His life, and because He lives, we shall live also. This is practical religion; for we are to be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. No one of us can be safe save as we join the Lord in a perpetual covenant, that shall not be forgotten by us.—The Review and Herald, March 14, 1893.

Dear Friends,
When Ronnie Jay was eight years old, I wanted to buy him something special for Christmas, so I went to town to get some ideas. As I passed a pet store, I thought I’d check in there. I saw cages filled with hamsters and gerbils. There was the perfect pet for my son! These gerbils came in a variety of colors. I chose a tiny black and white one that had just been weaned.
Ronnie Jay was delighted! He took such good care of him, that Gerbily-erbily lived to be nearly five years old. To soothe Ronnie Jay’s sadness at the death of his pet, we went that very day and bought another one. The next one didn’t last as long, nor did the next, nor the next, each living the customary year or two in captivity.
Each of these little rodents has some common traits that gave us enjoyment. They were gentile and didn’t bite, which made them fun to handle. They liked to run in their wheel as well as in this little ball that they could get inside and explore the house to their “heart’s content.” One of the funniest things they did that made us laugh was the way they would eat M&M’s. When given one of these coated chocolate candies, they would carefully shell it and eat the chocolate inside. Not one of the gerbils we had had would eat the outside of the candy. They must have thought that candy coating was the shell of a very sweet seed.
Their approach to life is the way they had been taught, but it caused them to miss out on part of the treat. So it is with us. Our thought patterns, our actions, our words are largely developed from what we have been taught and the experiences we have gone through. They do not always make sense, but we stick to them because they are familiar: they are comfortable. They are full of self, pride, and sin.
Often, deep within us, we long for something better. We have a desire for a change, yet day after day, year after year, we think the same thoughts, do the same things, react the same way. We become discontented and try to fill the void we are feeling by tasting the pleasures of this world, but they leave us unsatisfied. Those fleeting pleasures last but a moment. When they are over, we are must look for something else to satisfy that emptiness within us.
Each of us have within our reach the answer that can break us out of our routine. Each can find the fulfillment we crave. True joy and happiness is found in God’s Word. “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat” Isa 55:1 How much we need that water of life! How much we need a way to receive it. Jesus says to us, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
Our Dear Saviour is the fulfillment of all our desire for happiness and peace, but it costs us something to accept His great offer of salvation. It costs us our preconceived ideas, the fleeting pleasures of sin, our cherished sin, our self-centeredness. Sometimes it will even cause us to be hated by the very ones we love the most. Yet all is worth giving up for the One Who loves us so. Jesus told a parable to illustrate this fact. “the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.” Matt 13:44-46
The way that the Good Shepherd leads will open to us new avenues of thought, new ways of doing things, new ways of speaking. He will lead us in the way in which we should go both here in this world and in the earth made new. “For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” Rev 7:17 What an experience can be ours!
May we set aside everything that distracts and follow our Loving Redeemer today. May we allow Him to have complete control of our thoughts, our words, and our actions. May we find our greatest happiness in the One Who left the glories of Heaven and died upon the cruel cross that we might spend eternity in close fellowship with Him is my prayer.

The Enemy Does Not Give Up Easily

December 5, 2022 By admin

Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. Revelation 12:12.

Those who consecrate their all to God will not be left unmolested by the enemy of souls. Satan will come to them with his specious temptations, designing to allure them from their loyalty to God. He will present to them his bribe, as he did to Christ in the wilderness of temptation, saying, “All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me” (Matthew 4:9).

But what should be the answer of the Christian to all the temptations of the evil one? He should say, “I will not lend my influence in any way to the advancement of anything save the cause of Christ. I am not my own; I have been bought with a price. I am not to live to please myself; for I have been purchased, ransomed by the blood of Christ. It is not possible for me to give to Christ more than that which belongs to Him; for every moment of my life belongs to Him. I am His possession, a servant employed to do the will of my Master.”

This is the only position that is safe for us to occupy; and if the individual members of the church felt in this way, what a power would the church exert to draw and win souls to Christ. It is this halfhearted work, the effort to serve God and the devil at the same time, that leaves the church so destitute of the Spirit of God.

Were the members of the church consecrated to God, were they in the unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace, were they organized for the purpose of imparting to others an influence of good, the church would be indeed the light of the world. Should the individual members seek to represent Christ to the world in character and life, thousands would be attracted to the Saviour, who now have reason to criticize the words and works of those who profess the name of Christ.

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:6, 7).—Home Missionary, October 1, 1892, par. 3.

Dear Friends,

Every evening when I was a child, I would sit on my grandfather’s daybed and listen to the stories of his youthful adventures. He would tell of the many times that he would wade out into a stream and sleep on large, flat rocks that stuck out above the surface of the water. There were still vast areas of woods and wild animals that roamed the Pennsylvanian countryside in those far-off days, so by sleeping in the middle of a river, he could keep away from the mountain lions that prowled about. I had always lived in Michigan, so some of the things my grandfather described were difficult for me to visualize. I had never seen rocks large enough or flat enough to sleep on.

Because my grandfather was an artist, he paid close attention to detail and was able to describe the scenes of his stories so well, I felt as if I were there. One of these places was a valley between two mountains. Trains stopped for water there and huge, flat rocks sat in the river that ran along side of the tracks. As I listened to the story about this place, I could visualize it, but still it seemed so unreal to a girl who had never seen such things.

Eventually, I grew up, got married, and had a child. The story of the sleeping rocks was crowded into a corner of my mind. In the process of time, we moved to Pennsylvania. Some of Grandfather’s stories began to come to my mind as we explored our new area. After having lived in a crowded city for a few months, we moved to Tank, a tiny community of five houses. As we were visiting with our neighbors, one day, we commented on the strange name of our new home. They explained that it was named Tank because trains used to stop at a water tank to fill their reservoir with water in order to make the steam that was needed to continue along its way.

As we took a walk one day, we saw the remains of that old, crumbling water tank alongside an old abandoned railroad track. The track ran alongside a river through this narrow valley in the Nescopeck mountains. As we stood on the bridge looking down into that river, I suddenly noticed the large, flat rocks sticking out above the surface of the water. They were, indeed, large enough and flat enough to sleep on with enough room that one would not have to worry about falling off. With delight I realized that I was looking upon the very rocks that my grandfather had slept on so long ago. I wanted to stay there forever to feel close to the only person who took time for me when I was a little girl.

Although nearly a century had passed, those rocks had not changed. Although the waters of time were flowing by, they had remained. So it is with our Dear Saviour. He reminds us, “I am the LORD, I change not.” Mal 3:6 Truly He is the Rock of Ages. He is the Eternal, Enduring One, “the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He.” Deut 32:4

Jesus declared, “Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6:47-49 How He longs for us to build our life on the Rock, that the storms of life that are crashing all around us will not destroy us for our lives are founded upon His Life.

*The Lord’s our Rock, in Him we hide, A Shelter in the time of storm; Secure whatever ill betide,
A Shelter in the time of storm. A shade by day, defense by night, A Shelter in the time of storm; No fears alarm, no foes afright, A Shelter in the time of storm.

The raging storms may round us beat, A Shelter in the time of storm We’ll never leave our safe retreat,
A Shelter in the time of storm. O Rock divine, O Refuge dear, A Shelter in the time of storm; Be Thou our Helper ever near, A Shelter in the time of storm.

May we declare as did David, “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.” Ps 62:5-8 May we find the comfort and shelter in the Rock, Christ Jesus that we so much need today.
