Daniel

September 17, 2022 By admin

Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. Daniel 2:48.

A confession of Christ means something more than bearing testimony in social meeting. Daniel is an example to believers as to what it means to confess Christ. He held the responsible position of prime minister in the kingdom of Babylon, and there were those who were envious of Daniel among the great men of the court, and they wanted to find something against him that they might bring an accusation against him to the king. But he was a faithful statesman, and they could find no flaw in his character or life.

“Then said these men, we shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God” (Daniel 6:5). So they agreed together to ask the king to make a decree that no one should ask any petition of any God or man for thirty days save of the king, and if any disobeyed this decree, he was to be cast into the den of lions.

But did Daniel cease to pray because this decree was to go into force? No, that was just the time when he needed to pray. “When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime” Daniel did not seek to hide his loyalty to God. He did not pray in his heart, but with his voice, aloud, with his window open toward Jerusalem, he offered up his petition to heaven….

We may know that if our life is hid with Christ in God, when we are brought into trial because of our faith, Jesus will be with us. When we are brought before rulers and dignitaries to answer for our faith, the Spirit of the Lord will illuminate our understanding, and we shall be able to bear a testimony to the glory of God. And if we are called to suffer for Christ’s sake, we shall be able to go to prison trusting in Him as a little child trusts in its parents. Now is the time to cultivate faith in God.—The Review and Herald, May 3, 1892.

Dear Friends,

Ever since my mother took me to the Cave of the Mounds when I was nine, I have taken cave tours whenever I could. Some years ago, when we were on vacation in South Dakota, Esther suggested that we go to Jewel Cave. I was ready for a wonderful view of God’s handiwork under the earth despite the fact that I had been warned about that cave a few years before. Somehow, I just forgot all about that.

When the person at the ticket counter told us that there were 723 stair-steps in the cave, I asked if the tour guide went slowly and if the stairs were short flights interspersed with level areas. After being assured that was the case, we paid for the tickets. We began the cave tour by joining the rest of the people who were waiting for the tour to begin.

When we descended into the cave, however, I knew I was in trouble. Most of the path was either up or down on metal stairs. The “short flights” of stairs were not short at all. There were few level places to catch our breath. To add to my misery, the tour guide was a young, tough, no-nonsense type girl who could run a marathon without any exertion. She walked so fast, that I felt like a child trying to keep up with the long strides of a tall adult. I asked the guide if they ever had to call the paramedics. She replied, “Not often.” That was no comfort. Even worse was the fact that most of the cave was uninteresting limestone. There were very few crystals, even less flowstone, and only tiny stalactites and stalagmites in one area of the cave. Basically, it had two small areas that were “living.” About half-way through, I felt like I could go no farther. My legs felt like jelly. Thankfully, Esther came to my rescue. She got behind me and literally pushed me up the stairs. Seeing out dilemma, some nice man and his wife helped with the pushing. I was too tired to be too humiliated. I was just thankful when we got out of that place.

How often we need a helping hand spiritually just like I needed one physically in the cave. Paul tells us, “If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Phil 2:1-8 Just as Jesus set aside His Own position as King of the Universe to come to this dark and cave-like world in order to serve mankind because of a love for us, so we must, from a heart of love help others on the path of life. He says to us as He said to His disciples when they were striving amongst themselves who would be the greatest, “Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Matt 20:25-28; John 15:12-14

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

Isaiah

September 14, 2022 By admin

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Isaiah 6:9, 10.

The prophet’s duty was plain; he was to lift his voice in protest against the prevailing evils. But he dreaded to undertake the work without some assurance of hope. “Lord, how long?” (Isaiah 6:11) he inquired. Are none of Thy chosen people ever to understand, and repent, and be healed?

His burden of soul in behalf of erring Judah was not to be borne in vain. His mission was not to be wholly fruitless. Yet the evils that had been multiplying for many generations could not be removed in his day. Throughout his lifetime he must be a patient, courageous teacher—a prophet of hope as well as of doom. The divine purpose finally accomplished, the full fruitage of his efforts, and of the labors of all God’s faithful messengers, would appear. A remnant should be saved. That this might be brought about, the messages of warning and entreaty were to be delivered to the rebellious, the Lord declared, “until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, and the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land” (verses 11, 12).

The heavy judgments that were to befall the impenitent—war, exile, oppression, the loss of power and prestige among the nations—all these were to come in order that those who would recognize in them the hand of an offended God might be led to repent. The ten tribes of the northern kingdom were soon to be scattered among the nations, and their cities left desolate; the destroying armies of hostile nations were to sweep over their land again and again; even Jerusalem was finally to fall, and Judah was to be carried away captive; yet the Promised Land was not to remain wholly forsaken forever.—The Review and Herald, March 11, 1915.

Dear Friends,

The other day I was talking with someone who was adopted and in the course of the conversation, I told the story of Mrs. Russell and a baby that was literally left in her lap by a young lady who had struck up a conversation with her while they were riding on a train. This took place in the 1800s, so she was able to take the baby home and raise him as her son. She named him James. She loved him as her own son. She made one big mistake, however. In all his childhood and all through his teen years, she never told him that she was not his birth mother.

When he was 21, Mrs. Russell told him the story about the young girl on the train and how she chose Mrs. Russell to raise him as her own. She explained that the note the young woman had pinned to her baby said that on his twenty-first birthday, he was to go to a certain bank and it would be told him who he was and be given a large sum of money to go to college or to start a business. Poor James was shocked and horrified. He was repulsed by the whole situation. All the security of home vanished. How could this woman who had raised him NOT be his mother! She had never even hinted that he was not her own son. He felt deceived and forsaken.

After thinking about it for a few days, he decided that he did not want to know who he was. He did not want his real mother’s money no matter how much or how willingly it was offered. Mrs. Russell had loved him, and he loved her. She had raised him as her son. She was his mother: not the one who gave him birth.

When my mother was a little girl, she lived next door to James. He was a bent-over, white-haired old man who walked on crutches because he had arthritis so badly. Because of his decision, he had lived his life as a common laborer, owned only a small house, when he could have had a good education and great riches.

When I was a little girl, I used to look at his picture. He and his wife (a squat little woman with her hair drawn up in a strange-looking knot on the very top of her head) were standing on the steps of their very tiny wooden house. I would think of the life he could have had. It was within his reach. All he had to do was ask for it. But he would not.

I often thought, too, of his birth mother. She must have been at the bank on James’ birthday. She must have been searching the face of every young man as he entered and wondering if this could be her son. Long years, she had waited for this moment. All her desires were to hold in her arms that baby she was forced to abandon. As the day came and went, her heart broke even more than it had that far-off day. Had her son died? Had she chosen the wrong woman and she had taken him to an orphanage? Had she failed to tell him of the good news, the new life that was waiting for him? That evening, when the bank closed, a tearful, heartbroken woman left the bank never to know the answers to her questions……..

Even so, our Heavenly Father has provided everlasting life for us, but we must claim it as ours. All that can be done for mankind’s salvation has been done, but if we do not reach out and take it, it does us no good. How our Dear Saviour longs for us to accept His great provision. How He desires us to put our hand in His and allow Him to lead in our life. How much desire He has to give us His great gifts of love. He will not force us, however. He does all He can to draw us to Himself. As He tells us through the prophet Jeremiah, “I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” Jer 31:3 He assures us, “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” Isa 49:15,16 With longing desire in His voice, He pleads, “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” Isa 45:22

How our Great Redeemer’s heart of love breaks when we do not accept His grace. He says to us as He said to Jerusalem of old, “how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” Matt 23:37 “As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die?” Eze 33:11

May we never turn away from His great love. May we reach out and accept His Great Gift. May we love Him with all of our heart, all of our mind, all of our strength is my prayer.

David

September 10, 2022 By admin

Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, The spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. 2 Samuel 23:1, 2.

Who can measure the results of those years of toil and wandering among the lonely hills? The communion with nature and with God, the care of his flocks, the perils and deliverances, the griefs and joys, of his lowly lot, were not only to mold the character of David and to influence his future life, but through the psalms of Israel’s sweet singer they were in all coming ages to kindle love and faith in the hearts of God’s people, bringing them nearer to the ever-loving heart of Him in whom all His creatures live.

David, in the beauty and vigor of his young manhood, was preparing to take a high position with the noblest of the earth. His talents, as precious gifts from God, were employed to extol the glory of the divine Giver. His opportunities of contemplation and meditation served to enrich him with that wisdom and piety that made him beloved of God and angels. As he contemplated the perfections of his Creator, clearer conceptions of God opened before his soul. Obscure themes were illuminated, difficulties were made plain, perplexities were harmonized, and each ray of new light called forth fresh bursts of rapture, and sweeter anthems of devotion, to the glory of God and the Redeemer.

The love that moved him, the sorrows that beset him, the triumphs that attended him, were all themes for his active thought; and as he beheld the love of God in all the providences of his life, his heart throbbed with more fervent adoration and gratitude, his voice rang out in a richer melody, his harp was swept with more exultant joy; and the shepherd boy proceeded from strength to strength, from knowledge to knowledge; for the Spirit of the Lord was upon him.—Patriarchs and Prophets, 642.

Encouragement for the Erring

August 27, 2022 By admin

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 1:5-7.

For half a century I have been the Lord’s messenger, and as long as my life shall last I shall continue to bear the messages that God gives me for His people. I take no glory to myself; in my youth the Lord made me His messenger, to communicate to His people testimonies of encouragement, warning, and reproof. For sixty years I have been in communication with heavenly messengers, and I have been constantly learning in reference to divine things, and in reference to the way in which God is constantly working to bring souls from the error of their ways to the light in God’s light.

Many souls have been helped because they have believed that the messages given me were sent in mercy to the erring. When I have seen those who needed a different phase of Christian experience, I have told them so, for their present and eternal good. And so long as the Lord spares my life, I will do my work faithfully, whether or not men and women shall hear and receive and obey. My work is clearly given me to do, and I shall receive grace in being obedient.

I love God. I love Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and I feel an intense interest in every soul who claims to be a child of God. I am determined to be a faithful steward so long as the Lord shall spare my life. I will not fail nor be discouraged….

I love the Lord; I love my Saviour, and my life is wholly in the hands of God. As long as He sustains me, I shall bear a decided testimony.—Manuscript Releases 5:152, 153.

Dear Friends,
Solomon said, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Prov 22:6 Over the years, millions of parents, who have carefully raised their children, have claimed this promise when those very children have strayed from the fold. Often times, after a period of rebellion their children have, indeed, returned to the Lord.
Yet, Solomon’s statement actually works both ways. Parents, who have by precept and example, been careless in the raising of their children, scarred them emotionally or physically, or who have neglected to bring them to a knowledge of the truth; have wounded their offspring to the point where it is very difficult for them to overcome their hereditary or cultivated tendencies.
Years ago, I was looking through one of our church’s magazines and happened to notice a book authored by a woman who had been a friend of ours when we still lived in Michigan, but after we had moved we eventually lost track of her and her husband. In fact, the friendship went back even farther than that. Ron had gone to school with this girl. We had many of the same interests and they would often come over just to study the Bible and talk of spiritual things. It was wonderful to have such friends for that type of friendship is rare.
One day, as they were visiting, this young woman began to talk about some of the difficulties she had because of the treatment she had received at her father’s hand. He never allowed his children to cry. Even if they cried when he spanked them, he would spank them even harder until they sunk into a type of unnatural silence. (This reminded me of the abuse my grandfather had endured at his father’s hand.) Because of the emotional scars from his abuse, she had a great difficulty showing any kind of emotion other than laughter.
That natural release of tears and emotions that our Great Creator built within us to keep the pressure from building her father had beaten out of her. No matter how sad or how hurt she was, she could not cry. Sometimes she felt like she was going to explode.
Many years have passed since we got to talk of old times when we went to Michigan campmeeting in 2004. We had a wonderful time catching up on all that had transpired in the years we were apart. We did not mention her father nor did she, but I couldn’t help wondering if she has problems with her blood pressure or other stress related health condition that stems from her father’s unreasonableness.
How careful we should be in our dealings with children. Our Dear Saviour warns, “whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” Matt 18:6 “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not.” Luke 18:16 How easily that sweet, humble, trusting, loving nature of an unspoiled child can be wounded. How soon they take on the impress of that which they see and hear from those they love the most. Soon, even in their play, they are mimicking our tone of voice, our actions, and our attitudes. It can be a humbling experience to listen to your four-year-old child playing house.
How vital it is to “provoke not [our] children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Eph 6:4 Teasing and tormenting a child until he becomes embarrassed or anger wells up from within him, will bear unwanted fruit later on. That child will often exhibit the same behavior, teasing and tormenting playmates and even their pets. As that habit grows, they become rebellious and frustrated teens. When they become adults, they do the same to their children and the cycle lives on. Because of the treatment they have received, they have a difficult time accepting the love and forgiveness our Great Redeemer so freely offers.
Conversely, as we carefully raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, they respond with the loving trust and simplicity of an unspoiled child. Our little ones are able to love Jesus with all of their heart and soul for we have, through precept and example. exhibited the love and care that our Heavenly Father has for us. This does not mean that we fail to discipline them. No! Instead of striking in anger, we discipline them in love, praying with them, explaining why we must spank them and then taking our little one in our arms and assuring them of our continued love and care. How important it is to guard carefully what our little ones see and hear on television, in the books we read to them, in the other children with whom they play, in every aspect of their life. How seriously we should take Paul’s admonition, “whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Phil 4:8
May we be faithful and wise stewards over the children our Great Creator has given us. May we receive from our Heavenly Father the wisdom to raise our children aright, claiming the promise, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5 May we take hope and courage in God’s promise “I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.” Isa 49:25

The Eyewitness: Inspired to Give Testimony

August 8, 2022 By admin

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:3.

The work begun in feebleness and obscurity has continued to increase and strengthen. Publishing houses and missions in many lands attest its growth. In place of the edition of our first paper carried to the post office in a carpetbag, many hundreds of thousands of copies of our various periodicals are now sent out monthly from the offices of publication. The hand of God has been with His work to prosper and build it up.

The later history of my life would involve the history of many of the enterprises which have arisen among us, and with which my lifework has been closely intermingled. For the upbuilding of these institutions, my husband and [I] labored with pen and voice. To notice, even briefly, the experiences of these active and busy years would far exceed the limits of this sketch. Satan’s efforts to hinder the work and to destroy the workmen have not ceased; but God has had a care for His servants and for His work.

In reviewing our past history, having traveled over every step of advance to our present standing, I can say, Praise God! As I see what the Lord has wrought, I am filled with astonishment, and with confidence in Christ as leader. We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.

We are debtors to God to use every advantage He has entrusted to us to beautify the truth by holiness of character, and to send the messages of warning, and of comfort, of hope and love, to those who are in the darkness of error and sin.—Life Sketches, 195, 196.

Dear Friends,
One of the most well-loved of Jesus’ parables is found in Luke chapter fifteen. It is a perfect illustration of our Heavenly Father’s great love for us! “A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.” Luke 15:11-24
How much like that prodigal son we are for “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Rom 3:23 All have broken our Redeemer’s Great Heart of Love just as the son in this story broke his father’s heart. No, we have broken our Loving Creator’s heart even more than did he. For God so loved us that He gave Himself for us that we might be saved, yet, how often we turn away from His Great Provision by the thoughts we think, the things we watch, the words that come out of our mouth, the things that we do. How many times we go our own way, do our own thing with scarcely a thought heavenward. How often we take His Great Love for granted thinking that we can return to Him whenever we feel like it. Dangerous “game” we play!
We soon find ourselves in a “far country” full of uncleanness and as helpless to cleanse ourselves as was the prodigal when he was caring for the pigs. “We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” “The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.” Isa 64:6; 1:6
Day after day, our Heavenly Father yearns over us, watching with intense desire for us to make our first faltering steps toward Home. Indeed, He runs toward us with arms outstretched ready to embrace us, to welcome us, to cleanse us of our filth, and finally to lead us to His Home. “Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.” “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” 1 John 3:1; 4:9,10
The love of God, how great it is! It is beyond comprehension! It is beyond measure! The Great King of the Universe, the Creator of all loves us so much more than we can even understand. His love far surpasses the love of a mother for her precious babe. He assures us, “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” Isa 49:15,16 Think of it! Our Loving Creator is longsuffering toward us, not willing that we should perish, but that we should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
Let us give ourselves to the One Who gave Himself for us. When we give Him ourselves, what are we giving Him?—a weak, erring, self-centered person who is totally unworthy of His salvation. Yet, despite of what we are, despite what we have done, He offers us complete forgiveness. He offers us perfect cleansing from our sins, perfect restoration. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well.” Isa 1:18, 16,17 Let us “praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” Ps 107: 8,9 Let us serve Him always with our whole heart and soul and mind and being from this day forth and forevermore. Amen!
