Generosity

March 21, 2022 By admin

How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 2 Corinthians 8:2.

It is only when Christian motives are fully acknowledged, and the conscience is awake to duty, when divine light makes impressions upon the heart and character, that selfishness is overcome, and the mind of Christ is exemplified. The Holy Spirit, working upon human hearts and characters, will expel all tendency to covetousness, to deceptive dealing.

When the Lord’s messenger bears a message to the church, God is speaking to the people, awakening the conscience to see that they have not been rendering an honest tithe to the Lord, and that when it was not convenient to give, they have failed to present their offerings to Him. They have used the Lord’s own money for themselves, in building houses, in purchasing horses, carriages, or lands. They do this in the hope of large returns, and every year they have the same excuse. “Will a man rob God?” (Malachi 3:8). Oh, yes, he has done this many times, because he has not been spiritual, to discern the spiritual things.

On some occasions the Lord has moved decidedly upon worldly, selfish men. Their minds were illuminated by the Holy Spirit, their hearts felt its softening, subduing influence. Under a sense of the abundant mercy and grace of God, they felt it their duty to promote His cause, to build up His kingdom. They remembered the requirement, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:19, 20). They felt a desire to have a share in the kingdom of God, and they pledged to give of their means to some of the various enterprises of the Lord’s cause. That pledge was not made to man, but to God in the presence of His angels, who were moving upon the hearts of these selfish, money-loving men.—The Review and Herald, May 23, 1893.

Dear Friends,

When my mother was in her teens, (in the 1930’s) she wanted to be like some of the wilder girls in her school. They seemed so fashionable with their short skirts and makeup acting in ways that my grandmother did not approve. They had many arguments over the matter. It hurt and perplexed my grandmother to think that her daughter desired to be like these girls, but she never bothered to explain the reason why she should not do these things. She just told her that she must obey “because I said so.”

All the contention made my high-strung mother very nervous, but she persisted in her rebellion. One day, she thought of a plan to keep peace and still have her own way. Very carefully she hid a tube of bright red lipstick that she had bought at Van Avery’s Drug Store amongst her schoolbooks. Off to school she went feeling happier than she had in many a week. As soon as she got several blocks away, she entered a telephone booth and rolled her skirt up as high as she dared. The roll of cloth was a little uncomfortable around her waist, but at least she would be “in style.” Then she pulled the lipstick out of its hiding place and applied it. Satisfied that she now could be like the other girls, she continued on her way.

How often we do the same. Our Dear Saviour has given us standards by which we must live. These standards are for our benefit and happiness, Yet how often we desire to act like those around us who do not recognize their Redeemer. He explains the futility of such a plan, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Matt 6:24 John urges, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John 2:15-17

Like my mother tried to hide her rebellion from her mother, we attempt to hide our desires, thoughts, words, and actions from our Heavenly Father; but there is no hiding from Him. “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.” Ps 90:8 He knows us better than we know ourselves. Nothing is hidden from Him for “all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” Heb 4:13 Our Loving Redeemer assures us, “Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD.” Jer 23:23,24 “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Matt 10:29-31 Indeed, our Great Creator was at work creating us, shaping us in our mother’s womb. He says to us as He said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.” Jer 1:5 David prayed, “My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret… Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” Ps 139:15,16

What comfort this gives us! Not only does He see what we do, think, and feel, but He is always near, watching us, guiding us, caring for us, assuring us “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” Ps 32:8 He knows what is happening in our lives. He sees when we stray, yes, but He also sees our problems, our trials, our tears. “Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” Ps 56:8 In seeing these things, He knows what to do to help us. If we ask Him, He will untangle the tangled up messes we get ourselves into. He will comfort our sorrows. He will wipe away our tears and give us hope and strength. Precious Redeemer Who assures us, “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” Jer 29:11-13 May we heed Solomon’s advice when he said, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Ecc 12:13,14

Goodness

March 14, 2022 By admin

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Matthew 12:36, 37.

God would have us individually come into that position where He can bestow His love upon us. He has placed a high value upon man, and has redeemed us by the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, and we are to see in our fellow man the purchase of the blood of Christ. If we have this love one for another, we shall be growing in love for God and the truth. We have been pained at heart to see how little love is cherished in our midst. Love is a plant of heavenly origin, and if we would have it flourish in our hearts, we must cultivate it daily. Mildness, gentleness, long-suffering, not being easily provoked, bearing all things, enduring all things—these are the fruits upon the precious tree of love.

When you are associated together, be guarded in your words. Let your conversation be of such a nature that you will have no need of repentance. “Grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30). “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things” (Matthew 12:35). If the love of the truth is in your heart, you will talk of the truth. You will talk of the blessed hope that you have in Jesus. If you have love in your heart, you will seek to establish and build up your brother in the most holy faith. If a word is dropped that is detrimental to the character of your friend or brother, do not encourage this evil-speaking. It is the work of the enemy. Kindly remind the speaker that the Word of God forbids that kind of conversation.

We are to empty the heart of everything that defiles the soul temple, that Christ may dwell within. Our Redeemer has told us how we may reveal Him to the world. If we cherish His Spirit, if we manifest His love to others, if we guard one another’s interest, if we are kind, patient, forbearing, the world will have an evidence by the fruits we bear that we are the children of God. It is the unity in the church that enables it to exert a conscious influence upon unbelievers and worldlings.—The Review and Herald, June 5, 1888

Dear Friends,
One time some years ago, I shared with a lady about the fun time we had had with our children as they had all come for the Thanksgiving holiday. As soon as I had, I was sorry as a look of longing came over her face. Sadly, she told me how she wished that her boys would come for a visit or even call her. It had been many months since she had heard from them. When I asked why she didn’t call them, she said that every time she does, they act as if she is interrupting something. She looked as if she would cry at any moment.
How often we treat our Heavenly Father like those boys treated their mother. How many times we break His Great Heart of Love. Think of it! The Great King of the Universe, the Creator of all things looks forward to hearing from us. He longs to have us talk to Him, to bring Him all our perplexities, to share with Him our joys, to ask His advice, to listen as He speaks to us through His Word and through that “still small voice.”
David said, “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” Ps 55:17 Paul advises, “Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thes 5:17 As we go through the day, our Dear Saviour longs for us to be conscious of His presence. He desires to be part of all we do, all we say, all we think. How often He waits for us to think of Him, but we often go through our daily routine with scarcely a thought Heavenward.
“I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found…Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” Ps 32:5-8 As we pray, He instructs us. As we meditate on His Word, He enlightens us. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.” Ps 119:11-16
May we continually draw near to our Loving Saviour. May our sweetest thoughts be of Him, our words be words of praise for His goodness. May we so live that we can invite Him to go with us in all that we do, in every place where we go is my prayer.
Rose

Love

March 3, 2022 By admin

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 1 John 3:1.

John says, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.” No language can express this love; we can describe but a faint degree of love that passeth knowledge. It would require the language of the Infinite to express the love that has made it possible for us to be called the sons of God. In becoming a Christian, a man does not step down. There is no shame in having connection with the living God.

Jesus bore the humiliation and shame and reproach that justly belonged to the sinner. He was the Majesty of heaven, He was the King of glory, He was equal with the Father; and yet He clothed His divinity with humanity, that humanity might touch humanity, that divinity might lay hold of divinity. Had He come as an angel, He could not have been a partaker with us of our sufferings, could not have been tempted in all points like as we are, He could not have sympathized with our sorrows; but He came in the garb of our humanity, that as our substitute and surety, He might overcome the prince of darkness in our behalf, and make us victors through His merits.

[As we stand] under the shadow of the cross of Calvary, the inspiration of His love fills our hearts. When I look upon Him whom my sins have pierced, the inspiration from on high comes upon me; and this inspiration may come upon each one of you through the Holy Spirit. Unless you receive the Holy Spirit, you cannot have the love of God in the soul; but through a living connection with Christ, we are inspired with love and zeal and earnestness.

We are not as a block of marble, which may reflect the light of the sun, but cannot be imbued with life. We are capable of responding to the bright beams of the Sun of righteousness; for as Christ illuminates our souls, He gives light and life. We drink in the love of Christ as the branch draws nourishment from the vine. If we are grafted into Christ, if fiber by fiber we have been united with the living Vine, we shall give evidence of this fact by bearing rich clusters of fruit.—The Review and Herald, September 27, 1892.

Resting in Him

February 23, 2022 By admin

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:29.

While you have been walking in meekness and lowliness of heart, a work has been going on for you, a work which only God could do; for it is God that worketh in you, both to will and to do of His good pleasure. And that good pleasure is to have you abide in Christ, rest in His love. You must not let anything rob your soul of peace, of restfulness, of the assurance that you are accepted just now. Appropriate every promise; all are yours on condition of your complying with the Lord’s prescribed terms. Entire surrender of your ways, which seem so very wise, and taking Christ’s ways, is the secret of perfect rest in His love.

Giving up one’s life to Him means much more than we suppose. We must learn His meekness and lowliness before we realize the fulfillment of the promise “Ye shall find rest unto your souls.” It is by learning the habits of Christ, His meekness, His lowliness, that self becomes transformed—by taking Christ’s yoke upon you and then submitting to learn. There is no one who has not much to learn. All must come under training by Jesus Christ. When they fall upon Christ, their own hereditary and cultivated traits of character are taken away as hindrances to their being partakers of the divine nature. When self dies, then Christ lives in the human agent. He abides in Christ, and Christ lives in him.

Christ desires all to become His students. He says, Yield yourselves to My training; submit your souls unto Me. I will not extinguish you, but will work out for you such a character that you shall be transferred from the lower school to the higher grade. Submit all things to Me. Let My life, My patience, My longsuffering, My forbearance, My meekness, My lowliness, be worked out in your character, as one that abides in Me…. Then you have the promise not only “I will give,” but “Ye shall find rest unto your souls.”—Bible Training School, August 1, 1903.

Dear Friends,
My grandfather, Edwin Harmon, always had a love for trains. Because he could stand the abuse he suffered at his father’s hand no longer, he had left home at the age of ten and wandered up and down the east coast of the United States. He had not been gone long, when he came upon a group of homeless men. These men shared their food with him and taught him how to travel by riding in boxcars. This was great adventure! As he would ride along, he would pretend that he was the engineer driving the huge, steam-puffing engine. From that moment, he determined to one day drive a locomotive.
Sadly for him, it was not to be. One day a few years later,as he was back in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, to visit his mother whom he adored, his father came home from work at an odd time and immediately sent him to Lancaster Academy to finish his education. There he was watched continuously and although he almost “escaped” once, he was there until his father got him into an apprenticeship in the family trade of bookbinding. My grandfather didn’t want to do it, but somehow his father was able to force him into it. All of his life, he worked as a bookbinder. His workmanship was perfect and in great demand, but he hated every minute of it. As he worked long hours, he dreamed of being behind the throttle of a gigantic locomotive, traveling to distant places, being free.
When I was a little girl, he used to take me to the train station and we would watch the trains together. He often talked about trains when I would ask him for a story. He looked upon the time that he spent “riding the rails” as the happiest time of his life.
How often we do the same in our Christian walk. We think about being a Christian, we talk about religion, we dream of the reward at the end; but do we wholeheartedly take hold of the free gift of salvation that has been so freely provided? It is not forced upon us. God never forces. We have to ask for it. We must reach out and take it. We must have a daily experience, a daily conversion.
Peter advises, “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.” 2 Peter 1:10 John adds, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the
world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John 2:15-17 “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification.” 1 Thes 4:3
How are we sanctified? In that great prayer of Jesus, we find the key. Our Dear Saviour prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17 David of this, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Ps 119:9-11 Solomon adds, “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecc 12:13 May we reach out and accept God’s Great Provision, serve Him in singleness of heart by doing those things which please Him, and never look wistfully upon this sinful, old world as a thing to be desired is my prayer. (Luke 9:62)

Tastes Are Changed

February 14, 2022 By admin

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. Ephesians 4:22.
John says, “The light”—Christ—“shineth in darkness,” that is, in the world, “and the darkness comprehended it not…. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:5-13). The reason why the unbelieving world is not saved is that they do not choose to be enlightened. The old nature, born of blood and the will of the flesh, cannot inherit the kingdom of God. The old ways, the hereditary tendencies, the former habits, must be given up; for grace is not inherited. The new birth consists in having new motives, new tastes, new tendencies.
Those who are begotten unto a new life by the Holy Spirit have become partakers of the divine nature, and in all their habits and practices, they will give evidence of their relationship to Christ. When men who claim to be Christians retain all their natural defects of character and disposition, in what does their position differ from that of the worldling? They do not appreciate the truth as a sanctifier, a refiner. They have not been born again….
Let none feel that their way needs no changing. Those who decide thus are not fitted to engage in the work of God, for they will not feel the necessity of pressing constantly toward a higher standard, making continual improvement. None can walk safely unless they are distrustful of self, and are constantly looking to the work of God, studying it with willing heart to see their own errors, and to learn the will of Christ, and praying that it may be done in and by and through them. They show that their confidence is not in themselves, but in Christ. They hold the truth as a sacred treasure, able to sanctify and refine, and they are constantly seeking to bring their words and ways into harmony with its principles. They fear and tremble lest something savoring of self shall be idolized, and thus their defects be reproduced in others who confide in them. They are always seeking to subdue self, to put away everything that savors of it, and to supply the place with the meekness and lowliness of Christ. They are looking unto Jesus, growing up into Him, gathering from Him light and grace, that they may diffuse the same to others.—The Review and Herald, April 12, 1892.

Dear Friends,
Many years ago, my grandmother was doing her housework when, suddenly, she felt a very strange sensation inside her nose. She felt like something was crawling around inside of it. With horror, she realized that she must have breathed in a bug that had been flying by. She started sneezing and sneezing, but instead of being sneezed out, that bug was drawn up into her sinuses. My grandmother, who had felt fine just moments before, now felt like she had a terrible cold as her body tried to rid itself of the creature. That bug must have held on tightly, because he stayed inside no matter what my grandmother did.
After a few days of trying various remedies, my grandmother went to the doctor. After trying to flush that bug out with water, he finally had to remove it surgically. At last my grandmother was rid of that offending creature. Then she could heal from
the infection it had caused.
How foolish my grandmother would have been if she had refused to go to her physician for the help that only he could give. It would have had a far different outcome in those days before penicillin. We are all infected with the bug of sin, yet how few will go to the Great Physician Who is is waiting to help us. Indeed, He longs to save us from our sins. He greatly desires to cleanse us from the sin bug within us before it is too late. He pleads, “As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die?” Eze 33:11 “Turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness. Joel 2:12,13
How many attempt to rid themselves from the sin-bug by cleaning up the outside. This does no good as the problem is deep within. Our Loving Saviour promises, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” “I will put my laws into [your] heart, and in [your] mind will I write them and [your] sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” Eze 36:26, 27; Heb 10:16, 17
May we, this day, receive the cleansing and healing from Him Who “gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Gal 1:4
