No Peace at Any Price

June 29, 2020 By admin

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. Matthew 10:34.

The peace that Christ calls His peace, and which He bequeathed to His disciples, is not a peace which prevents all divisions; but it is a peace which is given and enjoyed in the midst of divisions. The peace that the faithful defender of the cause of Christ has is the consciousness that he is doing the will of God and reflecting His glory in good works. It is an internal rather than an external peace. Without are wars and fightings through the opposition of avowed enemies, and the coldness and suspicion of those even who claim to be friends.

Christ enjoins upon His followers to “love your enemies, … do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). He would have us love those who oppress us and do us harm. We must not express in words and acts the spirit they manifest, but improve every opportunity to do them good.

But while we are required to be Christlike toward those who are our enemies, we must not, in order to have peace, cover up the faults of those we see in error. Jesus, the world’s Redeemer, never purchased peace by covering iniquity, or by anything like compromise. Though His heart was constantly overflowing with love for the whole human race, He was never indulgent to their sins. He was too much their friend to remain silent while they were pursuing a course which would ruin their souls—the souls He had purchased with His own blood. He was a stern reprover of all vice, and His peace was the consciousness of having done the will of His Father, rather than a condition of things that existed as the result of having done His duty.

He labored that man should be true to himself in being all that God would have him, and true to his higher and eternal interest. Living in a world marred and seared with the curse brought upon it by disobedience, he [man] could not be at peace with it unless he left it unwarned, uninstructed, and unrebuked. This would be to purchase peace at the neglect of duty.

Everyone who loves Jesus and the souls for whom He died will follow after the things that make for peace. But His followers are to take special care lest in their efforts to prevent discord, the truth is surrendered, lest in warding off divisions, they make a sacrifice of its principles. True brotherhood can never be maintained by compromising principle. As surely as Christians approach the Christlike model, … so surely will they experience the strength and venom of that old serpent the devil.—Manuscript 23b, July 25, 1896, “How to Secure Peace.”

Dear Friends,
Before my great-great-aunt Allie was married, she taught grade school for many years. Here is part of one of the poems she wrote about one of her students.
The Confession
by Aletha Phillips-Spoor
Years ago I used to teach
In a little red brick school,
To forty little girls and boys
I taught the golden rule.
I did the best I could, but then
You know as well as I,
You can’t make all things perfect
However hard you try.
Most of my cares and worries
Were caused by two small boys,
Who teased the girls and came in late
And made a lot of noise.
In every barrel of apples,
You’ll always find a few
That contaminate the others’
So with children this is true.
One day these boys came tumbling in
At the last stroke of the bell,
Then from that old wall register
There came a dreadful smell.
“Limburger cheese!” cried Mary,
“Ray put it in,” said she;
Indignantly he shouted,
“‘Twas Jay—it wasn’t me!”
Now which of these two lads it was
I really couldn’t tell;
My first thought was to rid the room
Of that terrific smell.
I threw the windows open wide,
Thanked heaven for the breeze,
I shut the old wall register
But still we smelled that cheese.
I thought what if the principal
Should chance to happen in;
If she should smell that odor
And hear that awful din.
I found the problem hard to solve,
I couldn’t even guess,
For both lads looked so innocent
And neither would confess.
I threatened, coaxed, and scolded,
But in spite of all my pleas,
I couldn’t tell who brought to school
That awful smelling cheese.
Just as that limburger cheese permeated the schoolroom that long-ago day, so our influence impacts for good of for ill all with whom we come in contact. We might try to seem as innocent as Ray and Jay did so long ago, but others soon find out who we really are inside. By this influence we can lead those around us to stay on the right path or to stray from it. One little word can cause someone to start down the path that leads to destruction. Solomon’s proverb is as true today as it was when he uttered it. “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savor.” Ecc 10:1
Our words and actions tell what is in our heart. Our Dear Saviour says, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” Matt 12:34-37
How important it is, then, that we give our heart to Jesus each morning, that we may exert a right influence on those with whom we come in contact. Jesus, when He was upon this earth, had an attraction the drew people to Him. “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” Acts 10:38 When He was near, people felt loved, they felt accepted, they felt convicted of their sins, and desired to change for the better that they might do those things which pleased Him. (1 John 3:22)
Our Dear Saviour’s loving and kind influence was in direct contrast to that of the religious leaders who bound “heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and laid them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves would not move them with one of their fingers.” Matt 23:4 Jesus visited people in their homes, as well as on the mountainside, bringing them both physical and spiritual healing. He walked their streets pressed in by crowds of people all wanting to see Him, all wanting to touch Him. Even though most were there only for the excitement, or for the blessings He could bestow, He never turned them away. His influence even caused His enemies to marvel. When spies were sent to catch Him in His words, they declared, ” ‘Master, thou hast well said.’ And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.” Luke 20:39,40 When officers were sent to arrest Him, they returned to the Pharisees with the report, “Never man spake like this man.” John 7:46
May our influence lead others to our Dear Redeemer, drawing them closer to Him, that they may accept His free gift of salvation. May we daily pray, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Ps 19:14

Forgiveness Full and Free

June 26, 2020 By admin

But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. Psalm 130:4, 5.

There have been sins among us as among ancient Israel, but thank God we have had an open door which no man can shut. Men may say, “I forgive all the injuries you have done to me,” but their forgiveness would not blot out one sin. But the Voice sounding from Calvary—“My son, my daughter, thy sins be forgiven thee”—is all-efficacious. That word alone has power and awakens the gratitude in the grateful heart. We have a Mediator. There is but one channel of forgiveness and that channel is ever open, and through that channel a rich flood of divine mercy and forgiveness comes pouring down to us….

Many have expressed wonder that God demanded so many slain victims in sacrificial offerings of the Jews, but it was to rivet in their minds the great and solemn truth that without shedding of blood there was no remission of sins. A lesson was embodied in every sacrifice, impressed in every ceremony, solemnly preached by their priests in holy office and inculcated by God Himself—this great truth that through the blood of Christ alone there is forgiveness of sins….

I wish I could present this matter before our people just as I view it—the great offering made in behalf of man. Justice asked for the sufferings of a man. Christ, equal with God, gave the sufferings of a God. He needed no atonement Himself. It was for man—all for man…. His depth of agony was proportionate to the dignity and grandeur of His character. Never shall we see and comprehend the intense anguish of the sufferings of the spotless Lamb of God until we feel how deep is the pit from which we have been delivered, how grievous the sin of which humanity is guilty, and by faith grasp the full and entire pardon.

Here is where thousands are failing. They do not really believe that Jesus pardons them individually. They fail to take God at His word. He has assured us that He is faithful that hath promised to forgive us and be just to His own law. His mercy is not wanting in anything. Were there one defective link in the chain, then we are hopelessly ruined in our sins…. There is not one flaw in it, not one missing link. Oh, precious redemption! Why do we not bring this great truth more fully into our lives? How broad it is, that God for Christ’s sake forgives us—me, even me—the moment we ask Him to, in living faith, believing that He is fully able to do this.—Letter 85, July 24, 1886, to Uriah Smith, editor of the Review and Herald.

Dear Friends,
One time, while our children were still living at home, Esther got in the mood to rearrange the living room. She had been begging to do it for several months. Finally, I gave her permission. It was a good thing I did. As the four of us moved the furniture, we discovered many things had found their way underand behind the sofa. Jokingly, we called our sofa “the black hole” because so many items had ended up behind and under it.
For awhile the living room looked really messy. When it looked its worse, Ronnie Jay snuck to the front door, knocked, opened it, and pretended that someone was coming to visit us. “Oh no!” I thought, “I don’t want anyone to see the house in this condition.” Soon we discovered that there was no one there as Ronnie Jay began laughing heartily. After the startled feeling wore off, we all joined him. By the time Ron got home, everything was clean and orderly. We all agreed that the new arrangement made our old, worn out furniture look better.
Just as our house needed to be “stirred up” and rearranged, so it is good to do a little spiritual housecleaning from time to time. How many times, things need rearranging inside us. Our heart often becomes cluttered with the “junk” of this world. How often we need to pray as did David, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Ps 139:23, 24 Paul urged us to do this spiritual housecleaning when he said, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Then he puts his advice in perspective. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Phil 2:12, 13
Jesus is coming soon! Now is the time to rearrange the “furniture” in our mind that no “clutter” will be found there at His appearing, for then it will be too late to make it right. Now is the time to clean out from under the “sofa” in our heart. Now is the time to make the necessary preparations that we “may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” 2 Peter 3:14 And if we find things within us that must be put out of our heart, we have the promise, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”1 John 1:9-2:2 Praise God! He offers us the forgiveness we need! We can be cleansed from all iniquity! Our Great Redeemer “shall supply all [our] need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:19,20
Today, He is knocking at your heart’s door pleading for entrance therein. “To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.” Heb 3:15 “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Precious promise! “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:10,11
May we allow our Loving Saviour to clean us up inside and do the rearranging necessary to make us ready for that Great Day of His Appearing is my prayer.

Christian Perfection

June 25, 2020 By admin

There is a real work to be wrought in us. Constantly we must submit our will to God’s will, our way to God’s way. Our peculiar ideas will strive constantly for the supremacy, but we must make God all and in all. We are not free from the failings of humanity, but we must constantly strive to be free from these failings, not to be perfect in our own eyes, but perfect in every good work. We must not dwell on the dark side. Our souls must not rest in self, but in the One who is all and in all.

By beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, we are actually to be changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. We expect too little, and we receive according to our faith. We are not to cling to our own ways, our own plans, our own ideas; we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Besetting sins are to be conquered, and evil habits overcome. Wrong dispositions and feelings are to be rooted out, and holy tempers and emotions begotten in us by the Spirit of God.

This the Word of God explicitly teaches, but the Lord cannot work in us to will and to do of His good pleasure unless we crucify self, with the affections and lusts, at every step. If we try to work in our own way, we shall grievously fail…. We have a great work to do, and if we are laborers together with God, the ministering angels will cooperate with us in the work…. Then let us lay hold of this mighty power by living faith, praying and believing, trusting and working. Then God will do that which only God can do….

Self is the most difficult thing we have to manage. In laying off burdens, let us not forget to lay self at the feet of Christ. Hand yourself over to Jesus, to be molded and fashioned by Him, that you may be made vessels unto honor. Your temptations, your ideas, your feelings, must all be laid at the foot of the cross. Then the soul is ready to listen to words of divine instruction. Jesus will give you to drink of the water which flows from the river of God. Under the softening and subduing influence of His Spirit your coldness and listlessness will disappear. Christ will be in you a well of water, springing up into everlasting life….

Let the sanctifying power of truth be expressed in your life and revealed in your character. Let Christ mold you, as clay is molded in the hands of the potter.—Letter 57, July 23, 1887, to J. H. Durland and A. A. John, workers in England.

Dear Friends,
Yesterday, I wrote about the songbook that Aunt Allie wrote. Some years ago, I was able to find her book of poems she wrote from a used book store. I was so happy to find it. Here is one of her poems that I thought I would share with you today.
The Unfinished Picture
By Aletha Phillips-Spoor
A beautiful picture was painted
And hung upon a wall,
‘Twas the scene of a grand old forest
With stately trees and tall.
The leaves of the forest were crimson,
The sky was an amber hue;
No artist could have painted
The autumn tints more true.
An old man, gazing at the scene,
Admired the colors grand;
“In many ways,” he said, “it shows
The work of a master hand.
“But still there’s something lacking,
More beautiful ‘twould be
If within that grand old forest
Some shadows we could see.”
So with our lives, the sunshine
We could not do without,
But we really need some shadows
To bring the beauty out.

May we give thanks for all that the Master Artist paints upon the canvas of our life is my prayer. (Heb 12:5-15)

Christ Is Our Pattern

June 24, 2020 By admin

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12.

To follow Christ is not freedom from conflict. It is not child’s play. It is not spiritual idleness. All the enjoyment in Christ’s service means sacred obligations in meeting oft stern conflicts. To follow Christ means stern battles, active labor, warfare against the world, the flesh, and the devil. Our enjoyment is the victories gained for Christ in earnest, hard warfare. Think of this.

“We are labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Christ engaged in the great work for which He lived and died. We are to be instant in season and out of season. And why? “For ye are bought with a price,” and have enlisted under the banner of Prince Emmanuel. We are enlisted for labor, “not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life” (John 6:27). We are to work out our own salvation with fear and with trembling. We are not our own. We are bought with a price, to glorify God with our bodies and spirits, which are His. A work is to be done. There is a faithful work to do in His vineyard. And to every man is given his work. If we are privileged with the bread of life, we must work in the Lord’s vineyard. A charge comes to us to deny ourselves and take up the cross and follow Christ. We are to run the race set before us with persevering earnestness. This oft requires energetic movements. We cannot be idlers. We are urged, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life.” …

We must keep constantly before the ones who are pledged to the service of Christ that it means diligence. It means to be faithful workers, to do all possible to win souls to Christ. It is a constant watchfulness to be faithful unto death, to fight the good fight of faith until the warfare is ended and as overcomers we shall receive the crown of life.

This means much more than we take in. Christ is our example. The Christian warfare is not a life of indulgence to eat and drink and dress as self-indulgent worldlings. The Lord Jesus came in human nature to our world to give His precious life as an example of what our life should be. He is the specimen, not of spiritual indulgence, but of a life constantly before us of self-denial, self-sacrifice. We have the correct view that Christ our Pattern came to give us. There is before us the Prince of heaven, the Son of God. He laid aside the royal crown and the princely robe and came to take His position in our world as a Man of Sorrows and acquainted with grief. How few take it in!—Manuscript 156, July 22, 1907, “Diary Fragments.”

Dear Friends,
Occasionally, when I was a little girl, my grandmother would let me look at a small songbook for children that was very precious to her. It was written by Aletha Phillips-Spoor, her aunt Allie. Aunt Allie was a school teacher and had a gift for music. She wrote many little songs for her students and published them for others to enjoy.
My grandmother must have taken that songbook with her when they moved to Florida. When she died, my mother went down there and got rid of everything my grandparents owned—including, no doubt, that songbook. I would have liked to have had it for my children, but it is gone. All of Aunt Allie’s hard work no longer exists. Her “labor of love” is no more. The music she wrote will never again be sung.
Solomon asks, “What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?” Ecc 1:3 Jesus tells us, “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.” John 6:27
Peter warns, “the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” 2 Peter 3:10-14
“The word of the Lord endureth for ever.” 1 Peter 1:25 The Word of the Lord is the one thing that we can count on. From generation to generation it stands firm. God has watched over His Word and kept it pure and safe thoughout the millenia. It is the most precious Book on earth. Many were martyred for reading it during the Dark Ages. Many have been exiled for obeying its truth. “And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” Mark 13:13 Many have been changed because of it’s message. (2 Cor 3:18) Many have built their life upon its principles. Their work endures forever for it is founded upon the Rock.
David tells us, “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.” “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.” Psa 19:8-11;119:160
May we remember that the things of this world will pass away. May we fix our eyes upon the Place our Dear Saviour has gone to prepare for us. (John 14:1-3) May we measure all of our words, all of our thoughts, all of our actions, and all of our work by God’s Enduring Word is my prayer.

Thy Word Is a Lamp

June 19, 2020 By admin

Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Isaiah 2:3.

The Old Testament Scriptures were the lesson book of Israel. When the lawyer came to Christ with the question “Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” … the Saviour said, “What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” Christ said, “Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live” (Luke 10:25-28)….

If there were not another text in the Bible, this statement carries sufficient light and knowledge and assurance for every soul. The lawyer had answered his own question, but willing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” (verse 29). Then by the parable of the Good Samaritan, Christ showed who is our neighbor, and gives us an example of the love we should manifest toward those suffering and in need. The priest and Levite, whose duty it was to minister to the needs of the stranger, passed by on the other side.

At the conclusion of the narrative Christ asked the lawyer, “Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise” (verses 36, 37).

There are practical lessons in the Word of God…. That Word teaches living, holy principles, which prompt men to do unto others as they would have others do unto them, principles which they are to bring into the daily life here, and carry with them into the school above…. The altar and the plough are the experiences for all who seek eternal life. We know altogether too little of the greatness of the love and compassion of God. Let students put to the stretch the faculties of their mind, that they may comprehend such chapters as the forty-fifth of Isaiah, which should be placed in form, and brought into our schools as valuable studies. They will be better than romance or fable. Why have our schools been so dependent upon books which tell so little of the city we claim to be seeking, whose Builder and Maker is God? … Heaven is our home. Our citizenship is above, and our lives must not be devoted to a world which is soon to be destroyed. We need the Word of God revealed in living characters. What pure, excellent language is found in the Word of God! What elevating, ennobling principles!—Manuscript 96, July 20, 1899. “The Bible as Our Study Book.”

Dear Friends,
When I worked at the courthouse, I was daily reminded of the effects of sin upon a person’s life. Usually, it is a person’s face that shows this effect, but sometimes it is their actions. One day, a pleasant-looking, polite, young man came in and said that he was to meet his lawyer in order to fill out paperwork. On the side of his hand was tattooed the word “Forgiven.” When I saw that, I assumed that he was a Christian young man who had made an error in judgment and would probably not drive drunk again. He asked if he could get started on the paperwork right away as he had to get to work. I let him. All was going well until it came time for me to schedule him for an alcohol evaluation. Suddenly, his demeanor changed. He became argumentative and cocky. He accused me of singling him out and picking on him. I was shocked! After explaining that all people who are convicted of driving while drunk have to have this evaluation. I had expected that he would calm down, but he did not. When his lawyer came in, he complained of my “unfairness” to him. Of course, it got him nowhere. His attorney sided with me.
How many Christians there are who are as this young man. They appear to be Christians until their will is crossed. Jesus speaks of them, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matt 7:21-23 Paul’s list of mankind’s condition just before Jesus comes is so true. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2 Tim 3:1-5
Truly this list shows the cause of all the crimes that are committed, all the heartache in this world, all the strained relationships within or without the family circle. Ever since Adam and Eve disobeyed God, there have always been some people who have committed these sins, but never before have these character traits been so strong or so widespread. Of all this list, however, the most dangerous is “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” Sadly, there are many people claiming to be Christians but do not do the works of Christ.
A powerless Christian does more to turn others away from our Dear Saviour, than does the worst profligate. They are no better than the Scribes and Pharisees who persecuted Jesus. These men had an outward appearance of being righteous, but on the inside they were full of pride and selfishness. He, Who weighs the thoughts of the heart pronounced a woe upon them. “But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. . . . Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.” Luke 11:13-31 Tears must have been in His voice as He uttered those scathing rebukes. How His Great Heart of Love was breaking at their spiritual conditon. How His Great Heart of Love breaks when we are as they were.
May we stay so close to our Loving Redeemer, that others will take knowledge of us that we have been with Jesus is my prayer. (Acts 4:13)
