Tuesday: God Is the Judge

January 15, 2024 By admin

Daily Lesson for Tuesday 16th of January 2024

Read Psalms 75:1-10. Why is the boasting of the wicked in vain?

As the Sovereign King, the Lord is also a Lawgiver (Psalms 99:7) and a Judge (Psalms 98:9, Psalms 97:2).

The Judgment

Image © Review & Herald Publishing at Goodsalt.com

The wicked constantly threaten the just order that God established in the world, but the Lord will judge the world and bring the rule of evil to its end (Psalms 75:8-10, Psalms 96:13).

In Psalms 75:1-10, several images depict the irrevocable destruction of the wicked. The image of a cup with red wine (Psalms 75:8) conveys the intensity of God’s fury (Jeremiah 25:15, Revelation 14:10). Cutting off the horns of the wicked depicts the end of their power and dominion, while the horns of the righteous shall be exalted (Psalms 75:10). God chooses a “proper time” (Psalms 75:2, NKJV) or “appointed time” (NIV) for His judgment. This executive judgment clearly will take place at the end of time (Psalms 96:13, 1 Corinthians 15:23-26).

The Lord probes people’s hearts as part of His judgment. Read Psalms 14:2. It is reminiscent of Genesis 6:5,8. Both texts show that the execution of God’s judgment of the world is preceded by God’s examination of the people’s lives and seeking whomever He can save. This judgment is sometimes called “the investigative judgment,” when God defends the righteous and decides the fate of the wicked.

How does it work?

First, God delivers His people from the wicked (Psalms 97:10, Psalms 146:9) and crowns the humble with salvation (Psalms 149:4). Second, the unrepentant wicked are destroyed forever (Psalms 97:3). Some psalms poetically describe the uselessness of human weapons against the Divine Judge (Psalms 76:3-6). The Lord is also a forgiving God, although He punishes people’s misdeeds (Psalms 99:8). God’s people, not only the wicked, shall give an account to God (Psalms 50:4, Psalms 135:14).

The Psalms convey the same notion that is expressed in other biblical texts, that God’s judgment begins with God’s people and is extended to the whole earth (Deuteronomy 32:36, 1 Peter 4:17). The psalmist cries to God to judge him but relies on God’s righteousness to defend him (Psalms 7:8-11; Psalms 139:23-24).

The Psalms call us to rejoice in anticipation of God’s judgments (Psalms 67:4, Psalms 96:10-13, Psalms 98:4-9). How is God’s judgment good news for those covered by the blood of Christ?

3: The Lord Reigns – Singing with Inspiration

January 14, 2024 By admin

The beautiful picture on the front of our lesson pamphlet brings us our theme hymn for this quarter with it’s two variations in melody:
Hym 552/546 – The Lord’s My Shepherd.

Psalm 13:6: “I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me”.

“The Lord Has Made Us” has us singing
Hymn 320 – Lord of Creation and
Hymn 28 – Praise We The Lord Who Made All Beauty. “Several psalms portray God’s power over the forces in nature…”:
Hymn 88 – I Sing The Mighty Power Of God because
God Is Love – Hymn 349 and
God In His Love For Us – Hymn 641. We are then reminded as Sunday’s study closes to “shout for joy before the Lord” as does verse 2 in
Hymn 9 – Let All The World In Every Corner Sing.

Our thoughts then turn to “The Lord Reigns”:
Hymn 7 – The Lord In Zion Reigneth and
Hymn 29 – Sing Praise To God Who Reigns Above.

Knowing that “God Is The Judge”, we are able to sing this in
Hymn 418 – Day Of Judgment, Day Of Wonders!

“Ever Mindful of His Covenant”, we have great faith in
My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less (verse 3) – Hymn 522 saying on Christ the solid rock I stand.

Oh, the joy to know “His mercy is everlasting” – Psalm 103:8:
Hymn 110 – God’s Free Mercy Streameth.

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org/Search and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

3: The Lord Reigns – Teaching Plan

January 14, 2024 By admin

Key Thought : The Lord’s sovereign rule renders the world firmly established and secure. The psalmists seek to thrive and to serve God with undivided devotion.
January 20, 2024

1. Have a volunteer read Psalm 8, 100.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. How are God and people pictured in these two psalms? What do they reveal about God’s character?
  3. Personal Application: How positive are you that God loves you and is willing to hear and answer your prayers?” Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “There are too many people in the world, and there are so many sick, diseased, and evil to believe God cares about and knows each one. I think He focuses only on the ones that He knows will respond to His love since He knows the future.” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Psalm 78. 97.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What characterizes the Lord’s reign? What is the domain of His reign?
  3. Personal Application: Why should our love for God cause us to hate evil? Share your thoughts
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “What is evil? I mean each society has its standard or definition of what is acceptable or not acceptable behavior. Are there shades of what is evil and what is not, like the mortal and venial sins? Most everyone fibs at times, but is that evil? Most people have sex before marriage and many live together outside of marriage. Is that evil? Not many people worship God on the seventh-day Sabbath. Is that really evil for sincere Christians to observe another day or no day?” How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read Psalm Psalm 94:14, 105:7-11, Daniel 7:22.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What is our responsibility to God as part of the New Covenant that could reflect the reason for the dissolution of the Old Covenant?
  3. Personal Application: How can we have peace with God and the assurance of salvation when we are in the time of judgment? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “Why should we think the promises made to Israel can or should apply to us? Didn’t these promises either come to pass already or Israel lost them through disobedience?” How would you respond to your relative?

4. Have a volunteer read Psalm 19:7, 91:5, 18:30.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What’s wrong with modern idols today? What are they, and why are they dangerous to our walk with God?
  3. Personal Application: In what practical ways has keeping God’s laws helped you in your life? Have you ever suffered from violating those laws? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”Ministry of Healing, p. 148).
