Monday: Abraham’s Love for Everyone
Daily Lesson for Monday 23rd of October 2023
Read Genesis 18:1-33:16-33. How did Abraham exercise his great quality of love for all people without distinguishing tribe, race, or people?
The second quality of Abraham drawn from Genesis 18:1-33 was his love for people, even for those he did not personally know. This is a great lesson for each of us. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were sinners, far removed from his values, but his heart was full of love for everyone without any distinction of race, gender, language, or religion.
God, then, reveals to Abraham His decision to annihilate the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. “Then the Lord said, ‘Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know’ ” (Genesis 18:20-21, ESV).

With great humility and reverence, Abraham addressed his request to God: “ ‘Far be it from You to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?’ ” (Genesis 18:25, ESV).
Through his love, Abraham hoped to save all the people in these cities, not only the righteous. Certainly, Abraham knew just how evil and wicked the people were who lived there. Who knows what stories he had heard regarding those people and their practices? And from what we know about them, as revealed in the next chapter, with the sordid story of Lot and the mob outside his house (see Genesis 19:1-11), these were very evil people.
Yet Abraham, knowing for himself the love of God, appealed to Him in their behalf. Abraham knew that human beings always can return to God in repentance. To Abraham, saving the inhabitants of these cities would give them a chance to repent.
In the end, Abraham based his request on what he personally knew about God’s love for human beings. He himself had a great love for sinners, and he knew that as long as there is life, there is hope for salvation.

4.1 The Gift of Hospitality
Abraham’s hospitality, offered to travelers despite the scorching heat, illustrates his exceptional compassion and understanding of his mission to convey the presence of the Lord in a world dominated by paganism and idolatry. His proactive approach, initiating the encounter even before the strangers arrived, underscores his genuine concern for their well-being. Abraham’s readiness to provide rest, foot washing, and food highlights the essence of hospitality, while his unwavering dedication to his divine mission serves as an inspiring example of bringing blessings to others and fulfilling God’s call in our lives.
4.2 Abraham’s Love for Everyone
Abraham’s love for all people, regardless of their origin or affiliation, shines in Genesis 18. His compassion for the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, despite their sins and divergent lifestyles, demonstrates the universal nature of his love. This story reminds us that love and hope for repentance are essential values in our interactions with others, in harmony with Abraham’s example.
4.3 Abraham’s Spirit of Prayer
Abraham’s intercessory prayer for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah reveals the power and significance of prayer. His sincere love for the residents of these cities compelled him to pray for them, and his prayer was characterized by humility and persistence. This story teaches us that prayer is an integral part of our mission work, as it can touch people’s hearts and allow the Holy Spirit to work.
4.4 Abraham’s Mission
Abraham’s spirit of hospitality, love, and intercession had far-reaching consequences. Although Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, Lot and his two daughters were saved, in part due to Abraham’s prayer and God’s grace. This story reminds us that not everyone will be saved, but our mission is to invite as many as possible to choose Jesus while respecting the free will of each individual.
4.5 Submission to God’s Will
Abraham exhibited an outstanding quality by unconditionally submitting to God’s will. Despite uncertainty and unclear paths before him, he obeyed God’s call, left his land, followed divine guidance, and even accepted difficult decisions such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. His obedience and submission to God’s will serve as an inspiring example for us to trust God in all circumstances and unreservedly submit to His guidance.
Lesson 4 Sharing God’s Mission – 4.1 The Gift of Hospitality
Abraham demonstrates impressive hospitality in this Bible passage, illustrating many important elements of this virtue. Here are some aspects of his hospitality:

Initiative: Abraham took the initiative to welcome the guests even before they arrived at his tent. This shows his willingness to embrace strangers and care for their well-being without waiting for an invitation.

Politeness and Respect: He spoke politely to the travelers, addressing them as “my lords.” This respectful address demonstrates courtesy and reverence for his guests.

Caring: Abraham offered the guests water to wash their feet, a refreshing gesture of hospitality in a dusty and hot environment. He invited them to sit under the tree for shade and rest.

Feeding: He provided them with bread to refresh their hearts, indicating that hospitality not only fulfills physical needs but also aims to promote the guests’ well-being.

Generosity: Abraham was willing to go beyond the basics by offering more than just water and bread, exemplifying comprehensive hospitality.

Awareness of His Mission: This commentary also highlights that Abraham was aware of his missionary role. He saw an opportunity to convey the relationship with God and faith in Yahweh through hospitality. This shows that hospitality for Abraham was not just a social virtue but also a means to spread faith and fulfill his mission.
Overall, Abraham’s behavior in this Bible passage demonstrates how hospitality can be considered a noble virtue that fulfills both physical and spiritual needs and provides an opportunity to effect positive change in the world.
