How to Be Happy and Healthy This Thanksgiving

October 6, 2022 By admin

People are usually happy when they celebrate Thanksgiving—and when you are happy, you are actually healthier. When the Bible says, “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones” (Proverbs 17:22), it supports the scientific evidence that white blood cells develop in yellow bone marrow. This is significant because white blood cells are probably the most important part of your immune system because they are a whole collection of different cells that work together to destroy bacteria and viruses. Take a look and see how studies have revealed that happiness does equal healthiness. ===

Victim Blaming: Why We Blame Victims and Pardon Abusers

October 6, 2022 By admin

by Amy Nordhues  |  6 October 2022  | Why is it that when a person is victimized, especially domestic violence or sex crimes, people are more likely to scrutinize the victim’s actions than those of the perpetrator? Psychologists describe this tendency to blame victims as the “just-world phenomenon,” and it stems from a deeply rooted […] Source: https://atoday.org/victim-blaming-why-we-tend-to-blame-victims-and-pardon-abusers/

Sermon on the Mount (What Did Jesus Teach the Disciples?) – Pastor Ted Wilson

October 6, 2022 By admin

This week, Pastor Ted Wilson begins the discussion of the Sermon on the Mount, as Jesus rendered in Matthew 5–7. In the book Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, Ellen White dedicates her book "to His disciples whom still the Master is calling to choose the spiritual above the earthly kingdom, this little book is dedicated in the hope that its pages may unfold to them more clearly the glory of the unseen." She continues, "The Sermon on the Mount is heaven's benediction to the world—a voice from the throne of God" (page vii). The book opens with a series of blessings, known as the Beatitudes: "Blessed are the poor in spirit…blessed are those who mourn…blessed are the meek…Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…blessed are the merciful…the pure in heart…the peacemakers…and those who are persecuted for righteousness's sake…" (Matthew 5:3-11). Ellen White continues, "The Beatitudes are Christ's greeting not only to those who believe but to the whole human family. He seems to have forgotten for a moment that He is in the world, not in heaven; and He uses the familiar salutation of the world of light. Blessings flow from His lips as the gushing forth of a long-sealed current of rich life" (page vii). The language of heaven is that of blessing, not cursing. It is a language of peace and joy, not envy and hate. For this reason, Jesus says in Luke 6:27, 28, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you." Jesus wants us to manifest love to our fellow men. As Ellen White writes in The Desire of Ages, "love to man is the earthward manifestation of the love of God. It was to implant this love, to make us children of one family, that the King of glory became one with us. And when His parting words are fulfilled, 'Love one another, as I have loved you' (John 15:12); when we love the world as He has loved it, then for us His mission is accomplished. We are fitted for heaven; for we have heaven in our hearts" (page 64). In the following weeks, we will look more closely at the Sermon on the Mount. Learn more about the sermon on the mount by reading Ellen White's book Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing. You can find it and more at https://egwwritings.org/. Realising the scope of loss, trauma, change, and general negative impact the pandemic has had on wellbeing, BUC Director Sharon Platt-McDonald, contacted Karen to run the ‘Flourish!’ workshop.

Inside Story: Signs and Wonders

October 6, 2022 By admin

Signs and Wonders

By Dimitry Bagal

While studying Isaiah in the Adult Bible Study Guide a few quarters ago, one verse particularly caught my attention: “Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me! We are for signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts” (Isaiah 8:18, NKJV). The verse seemed to be about me. My wife and I already had a child, and we were waiting for the birth of our second. I thought, “‘Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me!’ It would be great to also have signs and wonders from God!”

Thinking about the verse, I remembered reading about God’s wonderful intercession in the lives of Adventists who, with faith alone, managed to raise significant funds for mission projects. I prayed, “Lord, I also would like to make a donation. I even have a good occasion: the birth of my second child. Please give me an idea of how much I should donate, with Your help, as a sign of my gratitude for a good pregnancy and smooth birth, and let me know who should get the donation.”

Almost immediately I felt impressed to raise 1,000 euros (about U.S.$1,185). The amount seemed unattainable for someone with a limited income like me in Germany. I prayed, “Lord, it’s Your goal, so You have to make sure that the money comes from somewhere. You know that my salary is insufficient to put anything aside. All I can promise is to pray daily and put aside any money that I may receive in addition to my salary.”

Every day, I prayed that the Almighty would somehow make it possible to reach the goal of the 1,000 euros. In less than a month, I already had received about half of the amount. An elderly couple unexpectedly gave me 200 euros for helping them move into their new home. Then an Adventist businessman gave 200 euros when my wife and I, in an effort to be hospitable, put up two of his employees in our home for the night. After that, a married couple transferred 50 euros, unannounced, to our bank account. A month before the baby was born, I already had the 1,000 euros.

The birth of Maranatha Yessenia was smooth and fast on May 4. I parked in front of the hospital at 8:37 a.m., and she was born 20 minutes later. The funds went to a mission project.

The Lord made it possible to reach His donation goal. Blessed with my wife and two children, I can truly say, “Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me! We are for signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts!”

Thank you for supporting mission projects through the weekly Sabbath School mission offering, the Thirteenth Sabbath Offering, and the Annual Sacrifice Offering.

Produced by the General Conference Office of Adventist Mission. Find more mission stories at adventistmission[dot]org

Amen!(6)
