Sabbath: The Fall
Sabbath Afternoon
Read for This Weekβs Study:Β Genesis 3:1-24;Β 2 Corinthians 11:3;Β Revelation 12:7-9;Β John 8:44;Β Romans 16:20;Β Hebrews 2:14;Β 1 Timothy 2:14-15.
Memory Text:Β βAnd I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heelβΒ (Genesis 3:15, NKJV).
Amid all that God had given our first parents in Eden came also a warning: βOf every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely dieβΒ (Genesis 2:16-17,Β , NKJV). This warning against eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil shows us that, though they were to know good, they were not to know evil.
We certainly can understand why, canβt we?
And, too, the threat of death attached to the warning about disobedienceΒ (Genesis 2:17)Β would be fulfilled: they will dieΒ (Genesis 3:19). Not only forbidden to eat from the tree, they were also driven from the Garden of EdenΒ (Genesis 3:24), and thus had no access to what could have given them eternal life as sinnersΒ (Genesis 3:22).
However, amid this tragedy comes hope, which is found inΒ Genesis 3:15, called the protoevangelium, or βthe first gospel promise.β Yes, this verse presents the first gospel promise found in the Bible, the first time humans are told that, despite the Fall, God has made a way of escape for us all.

Aaron and his sons were to represent the people before the Lord. As God is most holy, only the priesthood and Moses could approach God within the courtyard of the sanctuary. Their garments were exquisitely made “for glory,” not to puff them up, but to accentuate and elevate their office before the people. The priestly garments were made to harmonize with the elaborate, beautiful tapestries of the sanctuary. Their garments also represented the desire that God has for each of His people to harmonize their inner selves with the character of the sanctuary and with the God that it represented. The breast plate worn by the high priest was known as the “breastplate of judgment” because it bore the Urim and Thummim through which God communicated His will. The breastplate carried twelve jems bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There is great significance in God’s remembrance of His people whom he regards as His precious gems. His church is as a bride adorned “with jewels” (Isa 61:10) and considered His treasure. Did you know you were a prized treasure, precious in the sight of the Lord? Michael Hasel
