Still awake?
July 19, 2026 Think first. Then act.

Did you notice those little words?
“While he was still thinking about this…”
Joseph did not react immediately.
He did not write an angry message.
He did not make a hasty decision.
He took his time.
It was precisely at that moment that God was able to speak to him.
How often is it different with us?
We react.
Immediately.
To a message.
To a comment.
To a disappointment.
Later, we realize:
I would have been better off not saying that.
Joseph shows us another way.
He thinks.
He becomes still.
He gives God room.
And that is exactly when God intervenes.
Perhaps this is also your invitation today.
Not every decision has to be made immediately.
You do not have to reply to every message right away.
Not every problem needs a quick solution.
Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is:
Become still.
Pray.
And give God time to speak.
Because God’s voice is often quiet.
But it never comes too late.
Think about it
Is there a decision right now in which you should first listen for God’s voice?

Dear Father,
thank you that you also want to speak to me today.
Keep me from acting too quickly.
Give me a calm heart that listens to you.
Help me place your voice above every other voice and trust you.

Job Chapter 23 — Job Seeks God but Cannot Find Him
When God Seems Hidden
IntroductionIn the previous chapter, Eliphaz had accused Job very harshly. He claimed that Job must have wronged the poor, the hungry, widows, and orphans. To Eliphaz, it was clear: if Job was suffering so much, there had to be great guilt behind it. But Eliphaz did not really know that. He saw Job’s pain and turned it into accusations.
For Job, these words were like another heavy burden. He had already lost so much: his children, his possessions, his health, and the respect of many people. Now he also had to hear his friend accuse him of serious wrongdoing. But in his heart, Job knew that Eliphaz was interpreting his story incorrectly.
In this chapter, Job responds. But something is especially striking: he does not begin by speaking at length about Eliphaz. He does not remain focused on his friend’s accusations. His gaze goes deeper. Job longs for God. He wants to find God, stand before him, and present his case to him.
Job believes that God would listen to him. He believes that God’s judgment would not be like the harsh words of his friends. If only he could come before God, he would arrange his words and express his questions. He hopes that God would not simply push him away, but would pay attention to him.
Yet this is precisely the pain of this chapter: Job seeks God but cannot find him. He looks forward, backward, to the left, and to the right, but God remains hidden. Even so, Job does not give up on God. In the midst of this hiddenness, he says: God knows my way. And within those words is a quiet, powerful spark of trust.
The Biblical Story
Job’s Complaint Remains BitterJob begins by saying that his complaint is still bitter. His suffering has not grown smaller. The words of his friends have not brought him relief, and his questions have not yet found an answer.
He feels as though a heavy hand is resting upon him. His sighing is great, and he barely has enough strength to carry everything. Job is tired, but not indifferent. He is sad, but not silent.
This is important to understand: Job does not pretend that everything is suddenly better. He does not try to hide his pain behind beautiful words. He honestly says that his complaint is bitter.
Sometimes people think that faith means never being sad. But Job shows something different. A person can hold on to God and still weep. He can seek God and still say: My heart is heavy.
Job Wants to Know Where God Can Be FoundThen Job expresses his great desire: he wants to know where he can find God. He longs to reach God’s throne. Not to run away from God, but to come closer to him.
Job wants to present his case before God. He no longer wants to speak only with friends who misunderstand him. He does not want to keep hearing new human explanations. He wants to go to the source of all truth.
For children, we can imagine it this way: if two children are arguing and one feels completely falsely accused, that child may want to go to a fair teacher and say: Please listen to what really happened. Job longs for God’s fair hearing.
He believes that God sees more than people do. His friends see only his suffering and think they know the cause. But God also sees his heart, his ways, his tears, and the truth about him.
Job Would Arrange His WordsJob imagines what it would be like if he could truly stand before God. He would present his case in an orderly way. He would gather his arguments and clearly express his questions.
This does not mean that Job wants to approach God proudly. He knows that God is great and holy. But he also believes that God is just. Therefore, he does not want to shout chaotically, but to speak honestly and clearly about what troubles him.
Job would ask God why all of this had happened. He would explain that he is not the person his friends believe him to be. He would place his complaint before the one who can truly judge.
In Job’s heart lives the hope that God listens differently from his friends. People sometimes listen only halfway, judge quickly, and misunderstand. God can listen completely.
Job Hopes That God Will Listen JustlyJob wonders whether God would contend with him using his great power. But then he says something hopeful: no, God would pay attention to him. Job believes that God is not simply a cruel opponent.
This is an astonishing thought. Although Job feels that God has struck him severely, he still believes that God’s judgment would be different from the judgment of his friends. If he could only stand before God, God would recognize the truth.
Job is convinced that an upright person could speak with God there. He hopes that he would be cleared before his Judge, not because he is perfect, but because his friends have accused him falsely.
Here we see Job’s deep struggle once again. He does not understand God, but he trusts God’s justice more than the explanations of his friends. He fears God and seeks him at the same time.
Job Searches in Every DirectionThen Job describes his search for God. He looks ahead, but God is not there. He looks behind, but he does not perceive him. He looks to the left, where God might be working, but he does not see him. He looks to the right, but there too God remains hidden.
These words sound very lonely. Job is not searching superficially. He searches with all his heart. Yet no matter where he looks, God’s presence is not visible.
For children, we can imagine a child calling for a familiar person in the fog. The child knows that person must be somewhere nearby, but cannot see them. Everything is quiet, and the waiting becomes difficult.
This is how Job feels. God has not disappeared because Job no longer believes in him. God is hidden even though Job seeks him. This is a deep and painful experience.
Job Says: God Knows My WayIn the middle of this search, Job says something important: God knows the way he is taking. Even though Job cannot see God, he believes that God sees him.
That is a great difference. Job does not find God, but he holds on to the truth that God knows him. He cannot see God’s face, but he believes that God sees his way. His eyes cannot find God, but God’s eyes never lose sight of Job.
Then Job says that if God tested him, he would come forth like gold. Gold is refined in fire. Fire is hot and dangerous, but it can reveal what is genuine. Job believes: if God truly examines my case, it will become clear that I am not the person my friends claim I am.
This statement is not made lightly. Job is truly suffering. But he trusts that God’s vision goes deeper than human suspicions.
Job Remembers His Walk with GodJob says that his feet have held firmly to God’s path. He has kept God’s way and has not turned aside from it. God’s commands were important to him, and God’s words were more precious to him than his daily food.
This shows how Job sees himself before God. He does not say that he never needed God. He does not claim to be completely perfect and without weakness. But he knows that he has not lived as a godless person.
Job took God’s word seriously. He tried to walk in God’s ways. That is why it hurts him so deeply that his friends treat him as though he were secretly an evil man.
For children, we can say it this way: Job knows that he sought and loved God. He does not understand why others now act as though he had never taken God seriously.
God’s Words Were More Important Than BreadJob’s statement that God’s words were more important to him than the things he needed for life is especially beautiful. Bread strengthens the body, but God’s word strengthens the heart.
Job had not merely heard God’s words casually. He had treasured them. They were valuable to him. They gave direction to his life, just as a light shows a traveler the way.
This makes clear why Job does not simply stop asking about God. God was not a distant idea to him. God was the center of his life. That is why God’s hiddenness is so painful.
When someone we love suddenly becomes silent, it hurts. Job loves God and experiences God’s silence. That is exactly why his longing sounds so deep.
God Remains Great and UnsearchableThen Job reflects again on God’s greatness. He knows that God is unique. If God decides something, who can stop him? Whatever God desires, he does.
This understanding does not immediately comfort Job. It also frightens him. For if God is so powerful and Job is still suffering, then Job cannot simply change God’s way.
Job realizes that God is not like a person who can quickly be persuaded. God is greater, deeper, and more mysterious. His plans are not small. His ways are higher than human thoughts.
That is why Job is filled with both reverence and fear. He seeks God, but he also knows that God is mighty. He wants to speak before God, but he trembles before God’s greatness.
Job Is Frightened by God’s PowerJob says that his heart grows faint before God. When he thinks about God, he is afraid. This does not mean that Job hates God. It means that he senses how small a human being is before the great God.
Job is not only sad because of his suffering. He is also frightened because God’s ways remain dark to him. He had hoped to find God and present his case before him. But God remains hidden, and his power remains beyond understanding.
For children, we can imagine the sea. The sea is beautiful, but it is also vast and powerful. We can admire it and at the same time be afraid of it. This is how Job experiences God’s greatness: wonderful, yet overwhelming.
Job’s faith is therefore not shallow. He does not know only easy words about God. He experiences that God’s nearness can sometimes seem hidden and that God’s greatness can shake a person deeply.
Job Remains in Darkness, but Not Without GodAt the end of this chapter, Job remains in darkness. He says that God has made his heart faint and has frightened him. The darkness has not been removed. He still sees no clear way out.
Yet this very chapter shows that Job has not given up on God. Someone who no longer seeks God does not continue asking: Where can I find him? Someone who has completely forgotten God does not say: God knows my way.
Job is passing through a difficult night, but his words continue to move toward God. He complains, searches, remembers, and holds on to the truth that God knows him. His trust is wounded, but it is still alive.
This makes Job a special example. He shows that faith sometimes means continuing to seek even when we have not yet found. Continuing to speak even when no answer has come. Continuing to wait even when the path is dark.
A Quiet Spark of TrustThis chapter does not end with a great celebration. Job does not jump up and say that everything has become easy. His questions remain, his fear remains, and God’s hiddenness remains.
But in the middle of it all stands a sentence like a small candle: God knows my way. Job cannot see God, but he believes that God sees him. He cannot hear God’s answer, but he believes that God knows his story.
For a child, this can be very comforting. Even though we cannot see God with our eyes, we are not invisible. Even though we do not understand everything, God knows our way.
Job is still waiting. The story is not yet over. But his search shows that even in darkness, a person can reach out toward God.
What This Chapter ShowsThis chapter shows how deeply Job seeks God. He wants to know where God is, stand before him, and present his case. Job believes that God would listen more justly than his friends.
This chapter also shows that God sometimes seems hidden. Job searches in every direction but cannot find him. Yet he holds on to the truth that God knows his way and sees the truth about him.
SummaryAfter Eliphaz’s harsh accusations, Job responds with a deep longing for God. He wants to find God, stand before him, and honestly present his case. Job believes that God would not misjudge him as his friends have done. Yet although Job seeks God, God remains hidden from him. He looks forward, backward, left, and right, but he cannot see him. Even so, Job confidently says that God knows his way. He remembers that he has kept God’s path and valued God’s words more highly than his daily bread. At the end, Job remains afraid before God’s power and surrounded by darkness, but he continues to seek God.
A Message for Children TodaySometimes we do not feel God as close as we would like. Perhaps we pray and do not notice an immediate answer. Perhaps we have questions and do not understand why something is happening. Job shows us that even then, we may continue seeking God.
We can know this: even if we cannot see God, God sees us. Even if we do not understand the way, God knows our way. Our questions are not lost before him.

Daily Lesson for Monday 20th of July 2026
Dealing with matters of sexuality is always hard. It was hard for Paul, and it is for us, too. In these situations, we must be faithful to the Scriptures and address the issue with prayer and love. We must never forget that our goal is restoration.

Paul makes it clear in 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 that sexual scandals require church discipline. He says that the incestuous man should be removed (1 Corinthians 5:2), judged (1 Corinthians 5:3), delivered to Satan (1 Corinthians 5:5), and “ ‘put away’ ” (1 Corinthians 5:13, NKJV). The church members were told “not to associate with” him (1 Corinthians 5:9,11, ESV), nor “even to eat with such a one” (1 Corinthians 5:11, ESV). Paul employs strong language that may sound offensive to modern ears, but his words must be understood in their historical context. Also, one must remember that he is dealing with a flagrant, sinful lifestyle. Usually, in extreme situations, strong language is necessary. In any case, a brief explanation of some expressions is helpful.
“Let him . . . be removed from among you” (1 Corinthians 5:2, ESV; also 1 Corinthians 5:13). This refers to church discipline.
“Deliver this man to Satan” (1 Corinthians 5:5, ESV). Because this man did not choose to be under the protection of God by living in obedience to Him, he would be vulnerable to Satan. So, this expression can merely mean something like “Let him reap the fruit of his decisions.”
“Not to associate” (1 Corinthians 5:9,11, NASB), “not even to eat with such a one” (1 Corinthians 5:11, RSV). Close association with sexually immoral people was considered dangerous because they might influence others to imitate their conduct. In ancient times, sharing a meal could mean sharing values, as well. We are all susceptible to the influences that are around us, and we need to protect ourselves the best we can, especially in dealing with something like this.
“That his spirit may be saved” (1 Corinthians 5:5, NASB). Church discipline is rehabilitative. It intends to bring sinners back to their senses and cause them to abandon their sinful lifestyles. This is possibly what Paul meant by “destruction of the flesh” (1 Corinthians 5:5). It is possible, too, that the incestuous man in 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 is the repentant man referred to later (see 2 Corinthians 2:5-10). Church discipline reaches its purpose when the erring member is reintegrated into church fellowship.
Introduction: Just before writing this introduction, I had a wonderful discussion with my granddaughter. She is about to become a teenager, and we spoke about the importance of choosing her close friends carefully. 
Everyone who is reading this has been influenced by friends. Some, because of bad influences during their youth, have had their lives permanently changed. I recall a mother calling me about her son. He had been in a car when his friends decided to bully another young man. Things got out of hand and the victim died. In circumstances like this, friends can get you convicted of murder. Life-altering choices are often made when a person is young. The influence of our friends continues throughout life. Our study this week is about the influence that tolerated sin can exert within a church and about how Christians should resolve conflicts with one another. Let’s plunge into our study of the Bible and see what lessons we can learn for today!
I. Sexual Immorality
A. Read 1 Corinthians 5:1-2. Last week we discussed how sexual sins create division in a church. What related problem does Paul raise here? (Paul writes about a church that not only tolerates sexual sin, it is proud (arrogant) about its tolerance.)
1. Is that a problem today? (Yes, some churches take pride in tolerating what the Bible calls sin.)
2. What is the proper approach to unrepentant sin in the church? (A professing church member who openly and unrepentantly persists in serious sin should be removed from the church’s fellowship.)
3. Let’s discuss this. Today’s argument is that it is better to retain openly unrepentant members in the church because they may be convicted of sin and repent. What do you think about that argument?
B. Read 1 Corinthians 5:5. How does this answer the question about retaining the open sinner in the church to increase his odds of being converted? (Paul says just the opposite. Delivering the man to Satan may save him.)
1. How do you think this delivering to Satan works? (Being tossed out of the church, as opposed to being supported by the church, focuses the person’s attention on the seriousness of the sin. That might cause repentance.)
II. The Church and Sin
A. Read 1 Corinthians 5:6-7. What does this suggest is the problem of tolerating open sin? (Sin, like leaven, will influence others in the church.)
B. Look again at 1 Corinthians 5:1 where Paul says that this sin is “not tolerated even among pagans.” What problem with retaining open sinners does this raise? (Paul is not only concerned about the influence on other church members; he is concerned about the reputation of the church.)
1. Suppose the surrounding culture accepted this kind of conduct. Would cultural approval make it appropriate for the church to retain this man as a member? (No. The church’s standard comes from God’s Word, not from the surrounding culture. The pagans’ disapproval merely made the Corinthians’ tolerance even more damaging to the church’s witness.)
C. Read 1 Corinthians 5:9-11. Does Paul’s advice apply to more than merely sexual sins?
D. Read 1 Corinthians 5:12-13. How many times have you been told regarding sin in the church that we are not “to judge?” What does Paul say about the propriety of us judging fellow members? (Paul says that the church must exercise moral judgment regarding those inside the church, while leaving the judgment of outsiders to God.)
1. Paul calls the person we should judge an “evil person.” Is this important? (I think it is. We should not be tossing struggling sinners out of the church. The focus is on a believer openly and unrepentantly persisting in serious wrongdoing.)
III. A Deep Dive into the Nature of Sexual Immorality
A. Let’s skip ahead and read 1 Corinthians 6:12-14. Why is Paul telling us that food and stomachs will be destroyed?
1. What argument is Paul making against sexual immorality that he is not making about food? (Paul tells us that some decisions are more important than others.)
B. Let’s re-read 1 Corinthians 6:12. Does this remind you of Deuteronomy 4:2? (Deuteronomy tells us to refrain from calling things sinful when they are not. Paul explains that some things, while not sinful, are not helpful.)
1. Does this discussion have anything to do with Paul’s discussion about the stomach? (I think Paul is saying that when it comes to eating we have many choices, some better than others. But when it comes to sexual immorality, wrong choices have serious consequences.)
2. John MacArthur’s commentary says that God forgives all sins, and cites Ephesians 1:7. Someone once told me this in the context of sexual sin and my reaction was that some sin is more serious than others. Do you agree that some sins are more serious than others?
C. Read 1 Corinthians 6:15-18. How does the Bible answer the question about some sins being more serious than others? (These verses state that sexual sins are more serious. Sex sins are “against” our own body, while all other sins are “outside the body.”)
1. What do you think that means?
2. How does Paul explain it? (The person who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him. Because the believer’s body belongs to Christ, the believer cannot rightly join that body to a prostitute. Sexual intercourse creates a ‘one flesh’ union even when that union violates God’s design for marriage.)
D. Read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. How many of you have heard someone quote “our body is God’s temple” as an argument about diet? Is that appropriate? (This is an inversion of what Paul writes. He says that food and the stomach are not important compared to sexual choices.)
1. I recall an unfortunate instance in which the church asked me to meet with a prominent member who was involved in adultery. She said to me, “This is none of your business.” Is that true? (Being a member of the church made her actions the “business” of the church. But more importantly, this harms the glory of God contrary to 1 Corinthians 6:20. The church should address such a matter confidentially, humbly, and with restoration as its goal.)
E. Some readers may ask why sexual immorality is unique because it is a sin against the body? After all, our present bodies are mortal and we will get new ones. And how does sexual intercourse join “the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute?” Are these your questions? (I think we need to step back and look at the larger picture to understand this.)
F. Read Proverbs 5:15-18. The Bible compares the sex act to sharing water. Can you fit this into our discussion so far, or does this make no sense to you? (Water represents life. When Paul talks about us becoming “one” in sexual intercourse, he reflects the Genesis 2:24 “one flesh” statement and the Genesis 1:26-28 statement about Adam and Eve becoming as life creators. The reason why sex outside marriage is a unique category of sin is that God gave us life. He gave humans the power to create life. When you join that life-giving power to someone who is not your spouse, you have now sinned against your own body and against your special relationship with God and your spouse.)
IV. Conflict Resolution
A. Read 1 Corinthians 6:1-3. What problem is Paul addressing? (Members of the church suing each other in civil courts.)
B. Read 1 Corinthians 6:4-6. Why is suing fellow church members a problem? (It embarrasses the church. It suggests the church has no one wise enough to settle disputes.)
C. Read 1 Corinthians 6:7-8. Are you willing to be defrauded to protect God’s reputation? (My wife had a claim against our church that, if pursued, could not have been controlled by us and could have cost the church millions of dollars. We pursued it internally, and the response was that making things right would cost too much. We decided to “suffer wrong” instead of harming the church.)
D. Friend, when it comes to sex outside of marriage, when it comes to dealing with fellow church members, will you commit to the course that brings glory to God? Why not ask the Holy Spirit to enable you to do what glorifies God?
