Facing the greatest difficulty of their lives, the Israelites are miraculously saved by the Lord. Then, in wonder, they sing the Song written by Moses. This same praise will be sung by the saved in Heaven (Rev 15: 3). One might imagine that with the wonderful miracle of being delivered in the Red Sea, the Hebrews' faith would be strengthened for the rest of their lives. But this did not happen. Soon after, in expectation of dying of thirst, the people complained again to the Lord (v. 24; Gen 16:8). Why did this happen? They had not developed and improved their faith; their character still reflected the environment from which they came. As someone very aptly said, "They came out from Egypt, but Egypt had not come out of them …" So, we also must remove "Babylon the Great" (Rev 17:5) from within us to enter heaven's Canaan. And how to do it? The character of Jesus must be developed in us. "It is by loving Him, copying Him, depending wholly upon Him, that you are to be transformed into His likeness." (Steps to Christ, p 70). This is the truth, the way to eternal life (Jo 14:6; Is 45:22). Jeferson and Gisele Quimelli

Monday: Covetousness and Sexual Immorality
ReadΒ Hebrews 13:4-5;Β Luke 16:10-18;Β 1 Corinthians 5:1;Β Ephesians 5:3-5; andΒ Colossians 3:5. What two evils are related in these passages?
Paul warns the readers against sexual immorality and greed because they were two grave threats to brotherly love. In fact, New Testament authors and ancient moralists noted a connection between them.
Paulβs call to honor marriage implied the avoidance of anything that would belittle it. This avoidance included abstaining both from violation of the marriage oath and from unwarranted divorcesΒ (compare withΒ Matthew 19:9). The exhortation to keep the marriage bed undefiled refers to avoiding the profanation of marriage through sexual relationships outside of marriage. The expression βfornicatorsβ refers in the New Testament to every form of sexual immoralityΒ (1 Corinthians 5:9-11;Β 1 Corinthians 6:9-10,Β Matthew 19:9;Β Ephesians 5:5;Β 1 Timothy 1:9-10;Β Revelation 21:8;Β Revelation 22:15). In addition, Greco-Roman society was lax in regard to sexual ethics. A double standard was common; this allowed men license in their sexual relationships as long as they were discreet. Paul warns, however, that God will judge adulterers. Believers should not let social conventions establish their own ethical standards.
βLove of moneyβ was one of the main categories of vices in the Greco-Roman world. In fact, in another letter Paul referred to βlove of moneyβ as the source of all evilsΒ (1 Timothy 6:10).
The defense against this vice is an attitude that Paul encourages in several epistles. First, they should βbe contentβ with the things they hadΒ (alsoΒ 2 Corinthians 9:8;Β Philippians 4:11-12). Furthermore, Christians should believe and embrace Godβs promise that God would βnever leave β¦ nor forsakeβ themΒ (Hebrews 13:5). This promise was given at several places and moments to His people and is available to us todayΒ (Genesis 28:15;Β Deuteronomy 31:6,Β Deuteronomy 31:8;Β Joshua 1:5;Β 1 Chronicles 28:20). Believers, then, are invited to respond to Godβs promise with the words ofΒ Psalm 118:6Β (ESV): βThe Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?β This reference to Psalm chapter 118 is appropriate because the psalmist expressed there his confidence in God, despite the suffering inflicted upon him by unbelievers.
What are the ways that contemporary society undermines sexual purity and, at the same time, feeds the human love of money? In what practical ways can we strengthen our defenses against these two dangerous vices? |

The ministerial work of the church has been blessed by specialized ministries that train the congregation in their duty, setting goals and solid work plans, as well as warning against error, among other things. However, this specialization has led some, ministers and laymen, to mistakenly believe that only the "professionals" fulfill the mission, allowing the rest of the church to be mere spectators of the evangelistic mission pushed by those skilled in evangelism. Spiritual revival involves action, movement… life! — but not for just a few persons. Many churches today are considered alive because they have a great preacher, or functionally and structurally efficient departments. However, this is not necessarily total church involvement. The church will only be a real church when it lives its identity as a living organism, made up of all its members, actively involved, each having been summoned and trained to fulfill a particular mission: the preaching of the gospel. To be a member is to be a missionary, minister, or layperson. Today the church needs to go beyond the pulpit or the screen, because "The world will be convinced, not by what the pulpit teaches, but by what the church lives." ChS 6-7 Nestor Narez
