Healing Gift Does Not Replace Institutions

July 11, 2022 By admin

And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. Luke 5:13, 14.

The remark is often made, by one and another, “Why depend so much on sanitariums? Why do we not pray for the miraculous healing of the sick, as the people of God used to do?” In the early history of our work many were healed by prayer. And some, after they were healed, pursued the same course in the indulgence of appetite that they had followed in the past. They did not live and work in such a way as to avoid sickness. They did not show that they appreciated the Lord’s goodness to them. Again and again they were brought to suffering through their own careless, thoughtless course of action. How could the Lord be glorified in bestowing on them the gift of health?

When the light came that we should have a sanitarium, the reason was plainly given. There were many who needed to be educated in regard to healthful living. A place must be provided to which the sick could be taken, where they could be taught how to live so as to preserve health….

Lectures should be diligently kept up as a means of teaching the patients how to prevent disease by a wise course of action. By means of these lectures the patients may be shown the responsibility resting on them to keep the body in the most healthful condition because it is the Lord’s purchased possession. Mind, soul, and body are bought with a price…. “Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20)….

In the providence of God, instruction has been given that sanitariums be established, in order that the sick may be drawn to them, and learn how to live healthfully. The establishment of sanitariums is a providential arrangement, whereby people from all churches are to be reached, and made acquainted with the saving truth for this time.—Manuscript Releases 7:378, 379.

Dear Friends,

Some years ago, Ronnie Jay brought cable TV to our house. I enjoyed a few programs that I hadn’t seen before. One of them was a program where people bought an old home and found many clues as to who had lived in the house over the years. Some occupants had been famous, others not so well known. Some of the antiques, letters, and paintings found when remodeling were worth thousands: others were only interesting because they are part of the history of the home.

Some of those homes were like the old Victorian-style house my great-aunt lived in after her husband died. The house was really not hers but her daughter and son-in-law owned it. They made an apartment for her in her need. Even after Dorothy died, Ed allowed her to stay there and provided for her needs. (She lived there until she was about 88, when a massive stroke made it necessary to place her in a private care home.)

When I was a little girl, I used to love to visit Auntie Blanche. I would climb the stairs to her apartment with anticipation because I knew that she always had something special for me to do, or to taste, or to see. One of my favorite things was to visit the large room upstairs beside her apartment that had been the ballroom. Painted on the walls were ladies in their beautiful evening gowns and gentlemen in their tuxedos. I could almost hear the music they seemed so real. It was empty and dark since Dorothy had died, but I would often wander around in it and imagine happier days.

There are treasures found in God’s Word much more valuable than anything found in these old homes from yesteryear. The treasure found therein brings everlasting joy rather than the fleeting pleasures the homes’ occupants had enjoyed. Jesus speaks of these treasures. “The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. Matt 13:44-46 That treasure is His Holy Word and all the promises that it contains. How important it is that we set aside all that interferes with our digging deep within its pages. We should, with joy, anticipate the discoveries that await us for they point to “the Way, the Truth, and the Life”. John 14:6

As we open its pages, we can hear the Author say to us, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Jer 33:3 Each time we read, the same Holy Spirit, Who inspired holy men to write the Scriptures, is there to enlighten our minds with the truth contained therein. Jesus promised, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you. John 16:13-15

By His Word we are changed and sanctified. What a treasure that is! Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17 The Psalmist David says, “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. . . .Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. . . . Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” Ps 119:89-91,105,133

God’s Word is above every other book. It is God’s message of love and hope and joy for each of us. “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.” Jer 15:16

May we spend time in His Word each day. May we be guided by its precepts. May we be filled with His Spirit as we discover the great and marvelous treasures He has there for us is my prayer.

3: The Birdcage – Teaching Plan

July 11, 2022 By admin

Key Thought: God leads us through the struggle of this fallen world. It can comfort us and give us strength and confidence in God. This is how we can grow and be transformed.
July 16, 2022

1. Have a volunteer read Exodus 17:1-7..

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. What did God reveal about Himself at Marah and Rephidim?
  3. Personal Application: What question at Rephidim did Israel ask? Have you ever asked the same question? How did you feel and what lesson did you learn after it was answered? Share your thoughts..
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “Are there any corporate temptations that we might have to guard against as a group? If so, why?” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Luke 4:1-13..

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What lessons can we learn from this account about how to overcome temptation and not give in to sin?
  3. Personal Application: What temptations are you facing now? How can we apply Jesus’ example in our own lives to overcome? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “How are we supposed to understand trials or temptations that seemingly have no value – like the sudden death of a loved one?” How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read I Peter 1:6-9.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
  2. What does Peter mean when he says that the people are exiles and scattered?
  3. Personal Application: Have you ever been brought to an unpleasant place? Why was it unpleasant? If you had to revisit these experiences today, would you view them differently? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states: “Persecution of the early church helped establish Christianity as a major religion. There are pockets in the world where Christians are still persecuted, but for the most npart, Christians are in control and have no fear of being persecuted like in the past.” How would you respond to your relative?

4. Have a volunteer read Exodus 14:10,31..

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. Why did God bring Israel to a place that He knew they would be terrified?
  3. Personal Application: Why is trusting God so hard, even though we may know the wonderful promises He has for us? She a difficult situation you believe the Lord led you into to teach you? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”Ministry of Healing, p. 148).

Amen!(2)

3: The Birdcage – Singing With Inspiration

July 11, 2022 By admin

Having scanned through the lesson quarterly, there are so many hymns from which to choose a theme. In effect, there is a commencing theme hymn which changes through the quarter to the finale theme hymn. To start with, we could use:
Hymn 552 – The Lord’s My Shepherd or
Hymn 545 – Savior, Like a Shepherd.

Somewhere in the middle of the quarter one could change the theme and add in
Hymn 159 – On a Hill Far Away

which is where we complete our studies in Lesson 13.

It is wonderful to read that “He has a song to teach us, and when we have learned it amid the shadows of affliction we can sing it ever afterward” (Sabbath afternoon). This endless praise is found in
Hymn 183 – I Will Sing of Jesus’ Love.

Sunday presents the Promised Land to us as does
Hymn 620 – On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand. This was done by the wondrous leading of God –
Hymn 537 – He Leadeth Me,
Hymn 482 – Father, Lead Me Day By Day and
Hymn 619 – Lead On, O King Eternal. Do we have the openness to God’s instruction and a continual submission of our minds and hearts to His leading?
Hymn 634 – Come All Christians Be Committed because
I Know Whom I Have Believed – Hymn 511.

The Israelites (Monday) camped where there was no water for their physical thirst, but we find in
Hymn 460 – As Water to the Thirsty “so is my Lord, my living Lord, so is my to me” – the water of life.

I Need Thee Every Hour – Hymn 483 is our help for the Great Controversy of daily life as was found in the Desert (Tuesday), when “temptations lose their power” for I know that
Chief of Sinners Though I Be – Hymn 295, Jesus shed His blood for me, even though I continually fail as a fallen human.

Though we are beset by labours and trials on this old earth as Peter shares with us on Wednesday, we know we have a Wonderful Home with help of our Dear Lord, Jesus:
Hymn 435 – The Glory Song. Our genuine faith will keep us on track:
Hymn 608 – Faith is the Victory, because we are
Standing on the Promises – Hymn 518.

We may have our trials by fire (Thursday) to be refined and purified, and this we find in
Hymn 263 – Fire of God, Thou Sacred Flame.

Friday’s quotation by Ellen G White, we see “He is our helper”:
Hymn 103 – O God, Our Help.

In these times of trial may we pray
God Be in My Head – Hymn 679 and in my thinking and
Hear Our Prayer, O Lord – Hymn 684 granting us peace and hope til Jesus comes – very soon.

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Amen!(0)
