Lesson 9.Mission to the Powerful | 9.1 Nebuchadnezzar

November 25, 2023 By admin

The Seventh-day Adventist belief in the “unlimited atonement” is a central aspect of their faith that sets them apart from some other Christian denominations. The core idea that Christ’s death applies to all of humanity and is not limited to a predetermined group is based on the conviction that God’s will encompasses the salvation of all people. This perspective is supported by biblical passages such as 1 Timothy 2:4 and 1 John 2:2, emphasizing that Jesus sacrificed Himself for the sins of the entire world.
Examining Daniel 4 provides a fascinating example of God’s work in the world, especially concerning the salvation of powerful unbelievers like King Nebuchadnezzar. This biblical account illustrates that God’s judgment is not only applied to those who already believe in Him but also extends to the powerful, who may be proud and unbelieving. The humiliation of the mighty king and his acknowledgment of the Creator God highlight God’s ability to reach both the strong and the weak.
An important aspect of this story is the role of dedicated believers like Daniel as bridges for proclaiming faith to powerful unbelievers. This interaction shows that God often uses human mediators to convey His message. At the same time, Nebuchadnezzar’s humiliation emphasizes that God can directly intervene in the lives of powerful unbelievers to lead them to understanding.
The warning against arrogance implicit in Nebuchadnezzar’s story is relevant in today’s context. Even if we do not belong to the rich and powerful, there is a risk of succumbing to arrogance. This attitude can arise through various avenues, whether through success, knowledge, or personal convictions. The humbling of the powerful king serves as a reminder that no one is immune to pride and arrogance, and it is crucial to always be aware that all people are equal before God.
Overall, the story of Nebuchadnezzar teaches us that God’s love and salvation apply to all people, regardless of their social status or power. It reminds us to remain humble and recognize the significance of our role as messengers of faith in the world.
Even if we are not rich and powerful by the world’s standards, why must we be careful to avoid the kind of arrogance that this king had manifested? Why might that attitude be easier to have than we might think?
The warning against arrogance, even when not perceived as rich and powerful in worldly terms, is crucial. Arrogance is an attitude rooted in excessive self-confidence and the devaluation of others. Here are some reasons why it is important to avoid this kind of arrogance, even if one does not hold an outstanding societal position:
  1. Equality before God: Regardless of social status, wealth, or power, all people are equal before God. The Bible emphasizes the equality of all people before God, leaving no room for arrogant behavior towards others (Galatians 3:28).
  2. Unpredictable circumstances: Life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change rapidly. Even someone currently considered not particularly rich or powerful may ascend to such a position in the future. It is important to maintain humility and recognize the transient nature of external circumstances.
  3. Personal growth and learning: Arrogance can hinder personal growth and learning. Believing to know everything or being superior in every aspect may close one off to new ideas, perspectives, and experiences. Humility, on the other hand, allows for an open heart and a receptive mind.
  4. Interpersonal relationships: Arrogance can strain interpersonal relationships. People appreciate humility and respect. Displaying arrogance may lead to avoidance by others or deterioration of interpersonal relationships.
  5. Self-deception: Arrogance can lead to self-deception. Believing to be perfect or superior in every way poses the risk of overlooking crucial areas for personal development. Self-reflection and a willingness to work on oneself are essential for personal growth.
  6. Spiritual awareness: Many spiritual traditions emphasize the importance of humility. An arrogant attitude can hinder spiritual growth and obstruct the path to deeper understanding and inner peace.
It is easy to fall into arrogance as social comparisons and the desire for recognition are pervasive. Society tends to view success and power as measures of worth and significance. The inclination to elevate oneself above others to gain self-esteem is widespread. It requires conscious efforts to resist these tendencies, focus on one’s strengths without devaluing others, and remain open to personal growth and change.

God’s Mission, My Mission – Lesson 9: Mission to the Mighty | Sabbath School with Pastor Mark Finley

November 25, 2023 By admin

Series GOD’S MISSION, MY MISSION with Pastor Mark Finley  |
Lesson 9: Mission to the Mighty |
Memory Text: 1: Matthew 16:26 – For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? |
Content:
9.1 Nebuchadnezzar

The emphasis on the “unlimited atonement” in Adventist doctrine underscores the universal redemption through Christ, irrespective of predetermined groups. The story of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 strikingly illustrates how even one of the most powerful men in the world was brought to reason through God’s intervention. This highlights that God’s mercy extends not only to the weak but also reaches the rich and powerful. Nebuchadnezzar’s humiliation due to pride and arrogance serves as a reminder that God chooses different paths to reach people, regardless of their power and status.
9.2 Naaman
The story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 emphasizes the universality of Christ’s sacrifice for people of all backgrounds and statuses. Naaman’s extraordinary plea after his healing reveals his sincere devotion to the living God, even though pagan influences still lingered in his thinking. His willingness to faithfully serve the Lord despite challenges in a pagan land attests to Naaman’s genuine faith. Elisha’s response, “Go in peace,” emphasizes God’s gentle guidance for converts who are meant to grow step by step in faith.
9.3 Witnessing to the Learned: Nicodemus
The story of Nicodemus shows that external wealth and education do not necessarily fulfill a person’s spiritual needs. Despite his high position and knowledge, Nicodemus sought spiritual fulfillment and found it in Jesus. The encounter with Christ revealed that outward appearances can be deceptive and that everyone, regardless of social status, needs salvation. Nicodemus’s later actions, indicating a strong influence by Jesus, demonstrate the transformative power of the Gospel that can also reach seemingly powerful individuals.
9.4 Mission to the Rich
Jesus’s encounter with the rich young man in Matthew 19 emphasizes the challenge that wealth can pose to entering the kingdom of God. The statement that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle does not imply that the rich cannot be saved but highlights the potential obstacles that wealth can present. Both the rich and the poor face the same fate, death, and urgently need salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The comparison between the rich young man and Zacchaeus in Luke 19 shows that the response to Jesus is crucial, and while the rich man clung to his possessions, Zacchaeus was willing to change his life and respond to Jesus’s call.
9.5 Mission to the Powerful
The text emphasizes Jesus’s ability to befriend the mighty, eliciting admiration and respect, but also disdain. Examples of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea show that many rich and powerful individuals initially come to Jesus in secret to ensure he is truly the Son of God. The account of Joseph of Arimathea in Matthew 27 illustrates how God used a wealthy man influenced by Jesus for His purposes.
Mission among the mighty requires wisdom to know where to begin. It is often more effective to let the mighty come to you rather than actively seeking them out, as Jesus did. The subtle partnership with the mighty should be based on genuine service, as they want to be part of something good that transforms lives. The call to invest time in the lives of the rich and powerful and to pray for them demonstrates a practical approach to mission among this group.

God and Human Suffering | God’s Love and Wisdom in the Face of Suffering: A Journey through Job and the Puzzles of Life

November 24, 2023 By admin

Today, let us embark together on a profound journey into the pages of the book of Job, exploring the challenges of human suffering and delving into the love and wisdom of God. In Matthew 6:34, Jesus reminds us not to worry too much about tomorrow’s troubles, for each day has its own troubles. But how do we face suffering when it crosses our paths?
The book of Job captivates with its uniqueness in the biblical context. Job stands without the familiar framework of Israelite history, without reference to the promises to Abraham or the Exodus from Egypt. Perhaps Moses wrote this book in the solitude of the Midian desert before the Exodus even took place, or maybe because Job’s suffering addresses a universal theme that knows no national boundaries or temporal limitations.
Job, a man of extraordinary righteousness, is plagued by misfortune. Sickness, loss, and pain mark his life, and in his suffering, he seeks answers, an understanding of God’s actions. Yet, the book of Job shows us that God’s ways often surpass our human imagination. Why do the righteous suffer? Why is there evil in a world created by a loving God?
The words of Jesus remind us not to worry too much about tomorrow’s concerns. Each day has its own challenges, yet we trust that God will take care of what is ours. In Job, we see that God’s plan is greater than what we can comprehend. Despite the pain in Job’s life, God’s love and wisdom were present.
In Jewish tradition and the teachings of Ellen White, we learn that Moses wrote the book of Job in the Midian desert. God knew the questions that suffering would raise and presented us with a story that addresses the pain and suffering of humanity from the beginning. The Bible teaches us that evil is a reality in our world, but it is no excuse not to believe in God.
There are moments when we can recognize God’s effectiveness in nature. In Romans 1:18–20, the Apostle Paul speaks of God’s revelation through the created world. Nature itself is a living testimony to the existence and nature of God. Whether in majestic mountains, rushing waterfalls, or delicate spring blossoms, nature reflects God’s greatness and love. In these moments, we can draw strength and encouragement, as nature reminds us that the Creator of this world also holds our lives in His hands.
A significant theme to contemplate is the question of the origin of all things. The cosmological argument leads us to recognize the existence of God as the most logical explanation for creation. The Bible testifies that all things were created by God. In a world searching for alternative explanations, we know that our belief in an eternal and almighty God is the only logical answer to the question of the origin of all things.
And now, in the midst of evil, we turn to the dilemma that tormented Job. The question of why people suffer when God is good and loving is one that also troubles us. Job did not question the existence of God but sought to understand why. The dilemma is that as believers, we do not have the option to dismiss suffering as a random consequence of a godless universe.
Let’s read Job 38:1–3 and see how God responds to Job’s questions and doubts. God answers from the storm, asking questions that challenge Job’s human understanding. This encounter shows that there are often things beyond our understanding. Even though we don’t have a complete answer to why there is suffering, we can trust that God is greater than our questions and that His love and wisdom can shine through the dilemma.
Finally, let’s delve into theodicy, the question of God’s justice in the face of evil. This question accompanies us through the centuries and is a key aspect in the Great Controversy between Good and Evil. In Romans 3:4, Paul shows us that God’s justice will ultimately be revealed. Despite the difficulties and incomprehensibilities of life, it is crucial to praise God.
Why? Because praising God in the midst of evil is an act of faith and dedication. Even though we cannot fully grasp the depth of theodicy, we can trust that God’s ways are just and true. Praising God shows our faith that He will ultimately triumph.
Let us pray together in this awareness, thanking God for His love, wisdom, and justice. May our trust in Him grow stronger as we view the mysteries of life through His eyes.
In gratitude and humility, we come before you, O Lord, after collectively delving into the depths of the book of Job. Amidst the questions about the origin of suffering and theodicy, we recognize that your love and wisdom surpass our human understanding. Like Job in his quest for answers, we trust that you are greater than our questions and that your justice will ultimately be revealed. May our praise and dedication in the midst of evil be an act of faith that strengthens our trust in your guidance. We thank you for your love, wisdom, and justice. Amen.

November 24, 2023 By admin

What is Jesus doing in Heaven right now? This week, Pastor Ted Wilson, president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, explores the Biblical basis for Adventist belief #24, “Christ’s Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary,” focusing on how Jesus’ ministry in heaven, as described in Hebrews 8:2, relates to the earthly sanctuary service and our understanding of righteousness by faith.
