When I Am Tempted

August 7, 2018 By admin

“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”  – Mike Tyson

I like that quote. It may seem violent on the surface but it aptly sums up the human plight of temptation and our inability to deal with it on our own. I’m sure Mr. Tyson wasn’t even thinking about a spiritual application when he said this, but I’m going to go out on a limb and attempt one.

Dr. Loran Nordgren, a senior lecturer at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in Chicago, ran a series of experiments that placed college students in “tempting situations” to smoke, eat junk food, or forgo studying. The research found that we often display what’s called a “restraint bias.” In other words, we tend to overestimate how much self-control we will have against temptation when we’re not in the “heat of the moment.”

Our “restraint bias” causes us to think that we can handle more temptation than we actually can. Dr. Nordgren warned that “Those who are most confident about their self-control are the most likely to give in to temptation.”* All of our well-laid plans on how we’re going to deal with life’s temptations, can very quickly evaporate into thin air if we’re attempting to fight the battle on our own…especially in the heat of the moment.

“No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; He’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; He’ll always be there to help you come through it” 1 Corinthians 10:13.

If I’m dealing with temptation that seems to get the better of me, there are a couple of things that help me to better position myself for victory:

1. I recognize that I’m not the only person who’s ever had the temptation that I’m struggling with. I’m not exactly sure why that seems to be strangely comforting to me, but it is. It means that I’m not alone. Others have walked the same road of temptation.

2. I don’t have what it takes to get past this on my own. I need help, and God has promised me that He’s already provided a way out. As difficult as this is for me to internalize sometimes, I choose to remember that it is God’s faithfulness that helps me deal…not my faithfulness.

I’ve proven to myself (over and over again), that I can be my own worst enemy when it comes to dealing with temptation, but my Creator has also proven that He always shows up to help me. Remembering this helps me move forward with faith and confidence.

Tips for Saving Money

August 6, 2018 By admin

Many parents use the excuse that they are too busy to make any extra effort to live frugally. But even those of us who are the busiest can find an extra ten minutes here and there if we look hard enough for it. Here are five quickie tasks you can do anytime that will help your family save money.

The 10-Minute Pantry Inventory – You know all those food items that get pushed to the back of your pantry and never used? Spend some time taking inventory of all the food items you have in your pantry. Then think of creative ways to use those items this week. You probably have several meals in your pantry just waiting to be cooked. By cooking these meals instead of buying more groceries, you will save money on your family’s food bill this week.

The 10-Minute Coupon Organization – Even if you don’t clip coupons for grocery shopping, you probably use them for health and beauty products, taking the kids out for pizza, haircuts, oil changes, etc. Spend ten minutes organizing and going through your coupons, throwing away those that have expired and pulling out ones that will expire soon. The reason for this task is obvious. You can’t save money with coupons if you can’t find them when you need them or if you miss the expiration date.

The 10-Minute Medicine Cabinet Cleanup – How many times have you bought cough drops or cold medicine for the kids only to find when you got home that you already had plenty? Protect your family by taking time to clean out any old and expired medicines. Then take inventory of what’s left so you won’t buy more of something you already have.

The 10-Minute Closet Clearance – This one will save you both time and money. Spend some time sorting through your family’s closets and pulling out the clothes you and your kids don’t wear anymore. While you’re at it, look for new combinations of outfits using pieces you already have. By combining separates into different combinations, you’ll all feel like you have new outfits without actually buying anything new.

The 10-Minute Toy Sort – Take ten minutes to go through your children’s playthings. Pull out those extra toys they won’t even miss. Donate them to charity or save them for your next yard sale. Pick out the toys they do enjoy but haven’t used in a while. Put them up in the attic or on a high shelf. Next time your kids are begging you to buy new toys, pull down some of the forgotten toys. See if they don’t get just as excited as if you had bought something new.

Snake Oil

August 2, 2018 By admin

Back in the day, they rolled into town with their bottled potions that promised to cure consumption, arthritis and more. My dad remembers as a little boy seeing medicine men hawk their wares in town centers in the South. Sometimes they would set up a projector and show a short silent flick (accompanied by a musician). Once they had a crowd they would do commercial breaks between the entertainment to hawk their “snake oil,” which typically amounted to little more than colored water. But people are gullible and they used their precious resources to procure what they thought was the answer to their urgent need. Today politicians roll into town and do the same thing. They tell people what they want to hear. During the election process empty promises rule the day. And because people are still gullible, they vote with their brain in neutral.

The Pharisees tried to paint Jesus as a traveling Medicine Man, a charlatan and a fraud. He spoke about a new kingdom that could occupy people’s hearts and do away with their need to try and earn salvation. This was a direct threat to a religious system that preyed upon people’s fears and ignorance. Jesus was the real deal. Wherever He went He healed the sick, cleansed lepers, and in some places even raised the dead. But even this wasn’t enough to convince many that He wasn’t a fraud.

The manipulators of human gullibility use the “wow” factor to get noticed. That’s why Vegas is so popular. It’s all about “wow.” The problem with this is that eventually what used to “wow” us gets boring, and we need something bigger and more eye-popping to grab our attention!

After Jesus fed 5,000 + men, women and children, everyone said, “Wow! Do it again!” In fact, they wanted Him to be their king because He could just perform miracles every time they had a need.

Jesus refused to play their game because His kingdom is not about impressing people with supernatural evidence. It’s not about manipulating human gullibility to get a LIKE or positive response. God’s kingdom is about bringing healing to people ravaged by broken marriages, greed, deceit, identity theft, lies, religious hypocrisy and so much more!

God wants to change us so that we no longer fall victim to the religious charlatans, wormy politicians and fake news broadcasts.

Am I An Impostor?

August 1, 2018 By admin

Hi Jael,

I have attached your paper with my minor edits. I mainly corrected the few typos that I found and also made a few suggestions.

I think you did a great job!

For a normal, well-adjusted person, this would have been a great e-mail to receive from a professor, particularly after having spent countless hours writing, editing and rewriting. I should have been proud to receive such an e-mail. I should have been content that my hard work produced something that was so well received. My day should have been made, but all I could think was, “SHE FOUND TYPOS?!”

If there is one thing that graduate school has taught me is that I am more flight than fight, and more fetal position than flight. After receiving the e-mail above, I spent the next few hours in my head agonizing about the potential ramifications of my professor having found typos in my paper.

“She probably thinks I’m unprofessional and will refuse to give me a recommendation in the future.”

“She’ll most certainly say no if I ask her to support me in sending this paper out for publication.”

“The jig is up! She knows that I’m a fraud and that I don’t really belong here!”

These thoughts are laughable now, but for a few hours they were very real and very debilitating. I recognize now that these are just symptoms of the impostor syndrome: a phenomenon marked by the belief that one’s accomplishments are a fluke and that it’s just a matter of time before everybody knows it.

Unfortunately, the impostor syndrome effects and debilitates so many talented people. But here’s the thing, we’ve all got it (some more than others). We’ve all heard, at least once, a little voice telling us that we can’t, that we’re doing it all wrong, and that we might as well give up.

How do we ignore that little voice? Well…I don’t know, but here’s where I plan to start:

Every time that self-doubt knocks me down, I’m going to get up and give it my all. I suspect that this is much easier said than done. But I think I will have the impostor syndrome beat if everyday I decide to do two things: Rise and shine.

“Arise! Shine! For your light has come and the glory of the Lord rises upon you” (Isaiah 60:1, NIV).

Jael Amador writes from New York, New York.

Jackie’s Life

July 31, 2018 By admin

In the movie 42, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) is a Major League team executive with a bold idea. Rickey recruits Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman), an African-American baseball player playing in the Negro League, to break the unspoken color line and become the first modern African American Major League player. As both anticipate, this becomes a major challenge for Robinson and his family as they endure unrelenting racism on and off the field, from player and fan alike. As Jackie struggles against his nature to deal with the abuse, he finds an ally in Ricky, who is also a Christian.

On their first meeting, Robinson asks Rickey, “You want a player that doesn’t have the guts to fight back?”

“No. No.” replies Rickey. “I want a player who has the guts not to fight back. People aren’t going to like this. They’re going to do anything to get you to react. Follow a curse with a curse and they’ll hear only yours. Follow a blow with a blow and they’ll say the Negro lost his temper; that the Negro does not belong. Your enemy will be out in force and you cannot meet him on his own low ground. We win with hitting, running, fielding — only that. We win only if the world is convinced of two things: That you are a fine gentleman, and a great ball player. Like our Savior, you’re got to have the guts to turn the other cheek. Can you do it?”*

“To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also” (Luke 9:29, WEB).

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1, NASB).

It seems that much of society’s view of dealing with conflict is quite different from the response to relational struggle that Jesus spelled out in the scriptures.

Radical? Undoubtedly. Effective? Jackie Robinson’s career testifies to it.

Is it possible that we could learn something from this amazing baseball player who chose to follow the words of the One that he claimed to follow?  It’s well worth our consideration!

Michael Temple writes from North Dakota.
