8: Planning for Success – Teaching Plan

February 19, 2023 By admin

Key Thought: There are practical steps that can help us avoid pitfalls and mistakes in stewardship and financial principles.
February 25, 2023

1. Have a volunteer read 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. Why is this principle so important when looking for a life partner? Why would it help make the chances of a good marriage better?
  3. Personal Application: How did you decide on a life partner? What traits or attributes drew you to them? What challenges do you see in marrying outside your faith and against your families wishes? Share your thoughts..
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “Is this just talking about marriage, or does it have a greater application to business partners, friendships, and recreational activities?” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Leviticus 2:15, 39:21-23.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What did Joseph do that made his master look upon him so favorably?
  3. Personal Application: How conscientious, self-disciplined, and industrious are you in your work? Do others see you as one who is faithful in your efforts? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “I’m just working a minimum wage job until I can get a better one. It doesn’t matter how hard I work or how well I do on my job because nobody notices anyway.” How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read I Timothy 5:8, Proverbs 14:23, Colossians 3:23,24.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this passage is.
  2. What important points can we take away from considering finances in the home?
  3. Personal Application: Why is it important that parents not blame themselves for the wrong choices their older children might make? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “What can I do to train my children to become independent adults in this life and fit them for heaven?” How would you respond to your relative?

Note: 1. Provide a Christian home environment: family worship, church attendance, faithful tithe and offerings. 2. Teach them a willingness to work and an appreciation for it 3. Help with a good education. 4. Share other things you deem as important)

4. Have a volunteer read Proverbs 3:5-8.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. How do we apply this principle in our basic financial matters?
(Note: 1. Develop a spending plan 2. Spend less than you earn 3. Save a portion from every pay period 4. Avoid unnecessary debt 5. Be a diligent worker 6. Be financially faithful with God)
  3. Personal Application: How do Christians determine what a successful life is? How close is the life you’re living to either of these things? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”Ministry of Healing, p. 148).

Amen!(0)

Only Two Classes of People; Only One Ark of Safety

February 19, 2023 By admin

And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Genesis 6:13.
In the future there will be broken thrones and great distress of nations with perplexity. Satan will work with intense activity. The earth will be filled with the shrieks of suffering, expiring nations. There will be war. The places of the earth will be in confusion, as from its bowels pour forth its burning contents to destroy the inhabitants of the world who, in their wickedness, resemble the inhabitants of the antediluvian world.
In that time [before the Flood], as in this, there were two classes, the righteous and the wicked. Enoch and others walked with God in uprightness. But the great majority of the inhabitants of the earth were given over to iniquity, and their wickedness rose before God….
God gave direction that an ark was to be built for those who desired to be saved from the coming destruction. He was about to speak in determined language against the wickedness that had grown to fearful proportions. He was about to clothe Himself with vengeance and execute His judgment against the transgressors of His law.—Manuscript 72, 1902 (Manuscript Releases 18:92, 93).
As Noah proclaimed his warning message, some listened and worked with him in building the ark. But they did not endure. Evil influences prevailed. They turned away from the truth to become scoffers.
Thus it will be in the last days of this earth’s history. Those who today hear the message of truth, but do not believe, will fall amid the moral infidelity, even as in Noah’s day those who were not firmly grounded failed to stand till the end of their probation. When the Lord rewards everyone according to his deeds, these people will understand that God is truth, and that His message would have been their life and salvation if they had accepted the evidence given and practiced the conditions laid down. Then they will see that they might have been saved had they not rejected the only means of salvation.
The trials of God’s people may be long and severe, but the Lord never forgets them. Those who believe the truth and obey the commandments will find refuge in Christ. They will have the effectual protection of His ever-loving care as long as they take their position on the side of God and His law, which ever has governed, and ever will govern, His kingdom.—Manuscript 42, 1900.

Dear Friends,
When Eileen was seven, we were in a store looking at baby clothes, since it would not be long before Ronnie Jay would be born. The clerk , smiling, said to Eileen, “It looks like you will soon be a big sister! Isn’t that wonderful?”
Eileen said, “Yes! I prayed and prayed for a baby and finally Jesus said, ‘Oh, all right! You can have one.’ ” Both the clerk and I had a hard time holding in our laughter.
Later, as I reflected upon what my daughter had said, I wondered how many times I had said with exasperation in my voice, “Oh, all right. You can have one.” in answer to her constant begging for something. From that moment I determined that I would not give in to her pleading because I had been inadvertently giving her a wrong idea about prayer and how and why God answers. From then on, I was more careful to explain why I could or could not grant her requests.
Over the years had many conversations with my children explaining that God answers our prayers even when they seem to go unanswered. He knows far better than we do what is best for us. Jesus assures us, “your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.” “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Matt 6:8; Luke 11:9,10 At first that seems like we will get anything we desire, but that is not the case. Our dear Saviour tells us the conditions for answered prayer, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 15:7
The apostle John adds an additional qualifier to answered prayer. “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” 1 John 5:14, 15 James gives us another reason why we do not always get what we ask for, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” James 4:3 What a wonderful Heavenly Father we have! He listens to our prayers and weighs each request. Then He gives us an answer that is better than we could ask or think. It may not seem best in our finite judgment but could we see the end from the beginning, we would choose the same. May we have perfect trust and confidence in the answers God gives us to our prayers even if they are not the answers we expect.

Monday: The Blessings of Work (Ideally)

February 19, 2023 By admin

Unless you are independently wealthy, or the beneficiary of a trust fund that Mommy and/or Daddy set up for you so that you would never have to work a day in your life (if you read many stories about these kids, the money, meant to be a blessing, often leads to tragedy for them as adults), you will sooner or later need to work for a living. The ideal, of course, is to find something that you are passionate about that can provide you with a good income, get trained in it, find a job doing it, and work at it for your working years. That’s the ideal; of course, it doesn’t always turn out that way.

Read Genesis 2:15 (see also Eccles. 9:10 and 2 Thessalonians 3:8-10). What is the significance of the fact that, even before the entrance of sin, Adam (and certainly Eve, too) was given work? How might this explain why, as stated above, those who never had to work found their situation to be a curse?
The Carpenter's Son

This work was not a punishment, obviously. It was designed for their good. That is, even in Paradise, even in a world in which no sin, no death, and no suffering existed, God knew that human beings needed to work.

“And to Adam was given the work of caring for the Garden. The Creator knew that Adam could not be happy without employment. The beauty of the Garden delighted him, but this was not enough. He must have labor to call into exercise the wonderful organs of the body. Had happiness consisted in doing nothing, man, in his state of holy innocence, would have been left unemployed. But He who created man knew what would be for his happiness; and no sooner had He created him, than He gave him his appointed work. The promise of future glory, and the decree that man must toil for his daily bread, came from the same throne.” — Ellen G. White, Our High Calling, p. 223.

However, even after the Fall, when (as with everything else) work had been tainted by sin, God said to Adam: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life” (Genesis 3:17, NKJV). Notice, God cursed the ground for “your sake,” for the sake of Adam, with the idea that work would be something that he would need, especially as a fallen being.

What is it about work that, ideally, should make it something that can be a blessing to us?
