Thursday: Final Exam

January 8, 2020 By admin

Read Daniel 1:17-21. What is the key to the success of the four men? (See also Job 38:36, Prov. 2:6, James 1:5).

After three years of training in the “Babylonian University”, the four Hebrews are brought before the king for the final examination. They are not only healthier than the other students, they surpass them in knowledge and wisdom. The four are immediately hired to serve the king. We shouldn’t forget that this “knowledge and wisdom” is no doubt comprised of a lot of paganism. Yet they learn it anyway, and obviously they learn it well, too, even if they don’t believe it.

Nebuchadnezzar may think that such accomplishment would have something to do with the palace diet and the training program the four students have undergone. However, Daniel and his companions know, and the narrative clearly shows, that their superior performance owes nothing to the Babylonian system. Everything comes from God. What a powerful example of what God can do for those who trust Him. We should not fear the overwhelming power of media, governments, and other institutions that may threaten to destroy our identity as God’s children. As we place our confidence in God, we can be sure that He can sustain us in difficult moments and preserve us against all odds. The key is for us to make the right choices when confronted with challenges to our faith.

Looking at Daniel 1, we learn some very important lessons about God: (1) God is in control of history. (2) God gives wisdom so that we can navigate the hostile environment of our culture and society. (3) God honors those who trust in Him through inner conviction and lifestyle.

The chapter concludes by pointing out that “Daniel continued until the first year of King Cyrus” (Dan. 1:21, NKJV). The mention of Cyrus here is significant: it provides a glimpse of hope amid an experience of exile. Cyrus is the one chosen by God to liberate His people and allow them to go back to Jerusalem. Though the chapter begins with the appearance of defeat and exile, it concludes with a glimpse of hope and a homecoming. This is our God: even amid the most difficult moments of our lives, He always opens a window of hope so that we can see the glory and joy that lie beyond the suffering and pain.

Trust Your Brethren

January 8, 2020 By admin

But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. Matthew 23:8.
Some days ago I received copies of a number of testimonials written for Brother N_____ by different men in official positions. I read these testimonials. In the night season a representation passed before me. Brother and Sister N_____ were looking over these testimonials. As they were talking together, there stood by their side, not the One who appeared to Brother N_____ on a certain occasion—the Messenger of heaven—but an evil messenger, who insinuated into Brother N_____’s mind the belief that his brethren wanted to get control of his property, and to put him and his wife out of the work…. The messenger said that they had been turned out in their old age in order that these brethren might carry on the work they had begun. Sister N_____ accepted this statement. Many false reports were received as truth. Next, Brother N_____ was represented to me as writing letters containing these false reports….
Then the scene changed. I heard words of counsel addressed to Brother N_____ by his brethren, but he was not willing to receive help from those who had always been his sincere friends. It was represented to me that Brother and Sister N_____ were both deceived by the enemy. They had become subject to his temptations, and were deceiving themselves to their own hurt. One stood by the side of the tempted ones, and said, “Have you lost sight of Him who said, ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light’ (Matthew 11:28-30)? Will you, by envy and evil surmising, spoil the good work that has been done?”
My brother and sister, you now have the word of counsel from the Messenger of God. You are in danger, by yielding to jealousy, of counterworking the good work you have done. Stop right where you are. The Lord has helped you. He has worked in your behalf….
Addressing you, the Lord’s messenger said, “Cease to heed the suggestions of the enemy. Be led by the Lord. Walk in the way of His providence. Do not betray the work into the enemy’s hands by yielding to his evil suggestions. Look to Jesus…. In no case turn from your brethren, who have been your true friends.—Letter 61, April 17, 1902, to a couple who had pioneered work in the Southern States.

Dear Friends,
Yesterday, Ron had to go in for dental work and was miserable for the rest of the day. It reminded me of years ago when Ronnie Jay had a tooth with a cavity. His sister suggested that he go to the dentist. When I found out, I urged him to go to the dentist. Weeks went by. It began to bother him a little, so he asked me to take a look. It was a BIG cavity. Still he didn’t want to go. I understood. I also avoid going to the doctor or dentist as much as possible.
One morning as we were driving into work together, I told him the story about his great-great-grandfather. He had an abscessed tooth but refused to go to the dentist. That abscessed tooth pumped its poison into his bloodstream and he died of septicemia.
Ronnie Jay decided to go to the dentist after all. The dentist looked at the x-ray and shook his head. The tooth was too far gone to save. That tooth and his wisdom tooth had been fighting for the same space for years. As I sat there, I began wishing that years ago when the dentist had first suggested that he have his wisdom teeth pulled, I would have done so, but it looked like he had enough space in the back of his mouth, so I had figured that the dentist was just trying to “pad his pocket.” Because the tooth with the cavity was jammed up against his wisdom tooth, it got in such a bad condition, the dentist had to drill it into pieces and had a very difficult time getting all of it out. I felt so responsible…..
The Bible speaks of a group of girls who suffered because they had put things off as well. “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” Matt 25:1-13
May we never put off accepting God’s Great Grace. May we never utter those dreadful words, “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” Jer 8:20 May we “give diligence to make our calling and election sure: for if we do these things, we shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:10, 11

Are Adventist Women the Madwoman in the Attic?

January 7, 2020 By admin

by Elle Berry  |  7 January 2020  | My first introduction to the literary classic Jane Eyre came via a 1996 film adaptation. Ontario Conference’s First Centre of Influence, Really Living Centre, Celebrates Its Grand Opening

January 7, 2020 By admin

Mansfield Edwards and Eden M. cutting the ribbon, as Really Living youth pastor Benton Lowe; lead pastor, Francis Douville; SDACC president, Mark Johnson; and guest speaker, Dan Linrud look on.

On the Sabbath of Sept. 7, 2019, Really Living Centre kick-started
its grand opening with hundreds of members and visitors from across North
America. The 25,000 square-foot facility is Ontario Conference’s
first centre of influence, serving as both a worship space for Really Living
Seventh-day Adventist Church and a community centre, open several days a week.

The newly established centre will allow for the expansion of
existing programs, like a plant-based cooking school, free oil changes for
single parents, boot camp, summer camps, and drop-in sports nights, as well as
new programs, such as sewing classes, a smoothie bar, and indoor rock climbing.

            “We tried to
think of everything—how we can meet not only our needs but also the needs of
the community. That’s why we’re here,” said Brenda De Medeiros, elder and
founding member.

            Centres of
influence like Really Living address the reality that, in today’s secular
society, traditional outreach methods like evangelistic series or going
door-to-door are insufficient. Rather, ministering to people’s needs, then
sharing the gospel—Christ’s method—will make the biggest impact, particularly
in urban centres like Hamilton.

            Pastor Dan
Linrud, the midday service speaker, expressed joy at seeing the seeds he had planted
for such a centre 19 years ago as the founder of Living Word Church (now Really
Living), come into full bloom. He described the church’s humble beginnings
meeting as a small group of roughly 25 transplanted members from the mother
church, Hamilton Mountain, in the basement of church members.

            “That small group
of believers wanted to make a difference by being salt and light in the world,”
he noted. Thus, they followed the Acts 2 model of studying the Word and praying
together in different homes, building relationships, and reaching out to the
community. Linrud urged all present to likewise allow Jesus to transform them
so they could transform and illuminate their communities.

            Linrud also
praised the church’s current leadership for making his blueprint, sketched out
on napkins at Tim Hortons, a reality. “Pastor Francis and Tina Douville took on
the baton of leadership when I left this church, and they are the ones, along
with this membership, through whom God has accomplished this amazing vision.
I’m just so proud of what God has done through them.”

            Douville, in
turn, praised Linrud as a “man of vision” while also giving credit to the
church members. “I’m surrounded by selfless people who are teaching me how to
put God first. The people in this church are absolutely phenomenal.”

            Linrud and
his wife, Verlaine, made the trek from Oregon, where Linrud currently serves as
Oregon Conference president. Also present were former Living Word associate
pastor Juan Fresse, also coming from Oregon; Ontario Conference president
Mansfield Edwards, who participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony; and
Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada president Mark Johnson.

            In his opening
remarks that Sabbath, Johnson lauded Really Living as a model for other Ontario
churches. “We are not saved to be hermits in a cave. We need to be where God’s
people are.”

            As he closed,
Linrud noted that Really Living Centre was “meant to be a beacon of light [in]
a community that is overrun by darkness.” However, he said, “As beautiful and
amazing as this building is, as comfortable as the seats are, this is not our
final destination. This is not our home.”

Let us support Really Living and future centres of influence in Ontario in pointing a troubled world to the hope, healing, and wholeness found only in Jesus Christ and our eternal home.
