Why We Need Thorough Bible Study Before Baptism

October 10, 2023 By admin

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV

Many people ask, why the Seventh-day Adventist Church has people go though an entire series of Bible studies before baptism? It is because Jesus tells us to “teach them to observe all things I have commanded you.” This cannot be done in one or two sittings. So why did Philipp baptize the Ethiopian after just one Bible study? Keep in mind that the Ethiopian, as many people were in his time and place, was aware of the seventh-day Sabbath, clean and unclean foods, as well as other Bible standards. Even today there are people we may  be baptized sooner than others because of what they have already learned. I have had people come to my church who have been watching programs like It is Written for several years, and as I interview them I find they are already quite capable of explaining many doctrines from the Bible. That allows us to move on to other topics they may not be as familiar with.

Baptism is a major decision in one’s life – even greater than marriage or a career, as being a baptized disciple of Christ will have a major impact on who we marry and even on the way we perform our work or careers. Just like we do not want to rush into marriage without knowing what we are doing, or choose a career without being properly trained and informed about everything that career includes and demands, we need to have a clear understanding of what it means to be a baptized disciple. Jesus tells us right up front this not a decision to be made nonchalantly.

A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.  And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? Luke 14:25-28 NLT

Of course we do not know everything when are baptized. We will be learning throughout eternity, but those considering baptism should be taught enough from God’s Word so they can count the cost and have a thorough enough understanding of what it means to be a baptized disciple of Christ.

Ministers who labor in towns and cities to present the truth should not feel content, nor that their work is ended, until those who have accepted the theory of the truth realize indeed the effect of its sanctifying power, and are truly converted to God. God would be better pleased to have six truly converted to the truth as the result of their labors, than to have sixty make a nominal profession, and yet not be thoroughly converted. These ministers should devote less time to preaching sermons, and reserve a portion of their strength to visit and pray with those who are interested, giving them godly instruction, to the end that they may “present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.” – Ellen White, Evangelism, Pages 320.

Over the years, as a lay person giving Bible studies and then as a Bible Worker and now as a pastor, my ultimate goal is not to see people get baptized. It is to see them enter the kingdom of heaven. As we all, lay members and clergy alike share the gospel and give personal and group Bible studies, our goal should be to  study with each person in such a way as to encourage them to not only be baptized, but to be in the kingdom of God. Jesus Himself warns that many will make a nominal profession without ever being saved into His kingdom.

Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws. Matthew 7:21-23 NLT

We need to be faithful while studying with those seeking baptism, in teaching them as Jesus said, “to observe all things I have commanded you,” so we can see them reach the ultimate goal of being with Jesus in His kingdom.

Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. Revelation 22:14 NKJV

Amen!(0)

Wednesday: God’s People: The Channels of Mission

October 10, 2023 By admin

Daily Lesson for Wednesday 11th of October 2023

Throughout history, God has always had those who faithfully represented His character and, in obedience, followed His purposes. God’s people are those who have been called and who have accepted His invitation to be partakers of His grace. All of them have been—and continue to be—God’s instruments for the fulfillment of His mission.

Read Genesis 12:1-3 and Deuteronomy 7:6,11-12. What was God’s original purpose for His people in the Old Testament?

God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants had a specific purpose. They were called, created, and commissioned to be agents of God’s mission—channels of blessings to the nations (compare with Deuteronomy 28:10, Isaiah 49:6). However, they were chosen within a covenant relationship with God, based on an implied conditionality of faith and obedience (Genesis 22:16-18; Exodus 19:5-6; Deuteronomy 28:1-2; 2 Chronicles 7:14). This process, that of attracting the surrounding nations to Israel, was God’s “mission strategy” in the Old Testament.

In the New Testament, God’s mission continues. The risen Lord and Savior now launches a renewed “mission strategy” (see Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8) in which Christ’s disciples—who comprise the church—go out in mission to the whole world instead of, as with ancient Israel, the world coming to it. Mission did not originate with the church. On the contrary, the church exists because God still has a mission to be fulfilled and is using His church to fulfill it.

Yet, a question remains: What is the church’s mission? It is the same as that of the One who called the church into existence: “ ‘For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost’ ” (Luke 19:10, NIV). Though none of us in the church can save anyone, we can and must point others to the only One who can save, Jesus Christ.

“The mission of the church of Christ is to save perishing sinners. It is to make known the love of God to men and to win them to Christ by the efficacy of that love.”—Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, vol. 3, p. 381. What a privilege and tremendous responsibility!

Mission is to the church what air is to our lives. Without air, we die. Without mission, the church dies. What can you do, personally, to sustain the life of your church?

Amen!(0)

Tuesday: The Eternal Gospel: The Message of Mission

October 9, 2023 By admin

Daily Lesson for Tuesday 10th of October 2023

Read Revelation 14:6-7. What aspects of God’s mission can you identify in the “eternal gospel” (NRSV) presented by the first angel of the three angels’ messages?

This is the only place in Scripture in which the words “eternal” and “gospel” are connected. The gospel is the good news of grace offered to all through Jesus Christ. He came into our world to show us “grace and truth” (John 1:14). He lived a sinless life and died on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice to bear the penalty of our sins (Isaiah 53:4-5; 1 Peter 3:18). He rose to life, returned to heaven, was exalted by the Father, and today intercedes for us in the heavenly sanctuary (Revelation 1:18, Acts 2:33, Hebrews 7:25). He will soon fulfill His greatest promise—to return in majesty and glory and, ultimately, after the millennium to establish God’s kingdom on earth (John 14:1-4, Acts 1:11, Revelation 21:1-4). These are all essential realities of the eternal gospel.

The Word and World: open Bible against a background of the world

Nevertheless, the fact that this message is eternal is remarkable. There is only one gospel that can save us. It will remain the same until the mission of God is fully accomplished. There will never be another gospel. Deceitful teachings and doctrines come and go (Ephesians 4:14), but the message of salvation, the eternal gospel, is unchanging, and those who believe and live it in obedience will be rewarded (see Deuteronomy 5:33, Romans 2:6).

The same commission given to the first disciples also is given to us today. We must continue the task of making disciples for Christ everywhere. But what kind of disciples? Good, honest, fully devoted, loving people? These traits are essential, but they are not enough. We must make disciples focused on all biblical elements of discipleship (Luke 9:23; John 13:34-35; 2 Corinthians 5:17) with an ultimate purpose: being prepared and preparing others for the second coming of the Master, Jesus Christ.

“The proclamation of the judgment [Revelation 14:6-7] is an announcement of Christ’s second coming as at hand. And this proclamation is called the everlasting gospel. Thus the preaching of Christ’s second coming, the announcement of its nearness, is shown to be an essential part of the gospel message.”—Ellen G. White, Christ’s Object Lessons, pp. 227, 228.

How is the concept of judgment linked to the “everlasting gospel” in the first angel’s message? Why must the gospel be central to the idea of judgment?

Amen!(0)

2: God’s Mission to Us – 2 – Singing with inspiration

October 8, 2023 By admin

“God’s Mission – My Mission” consistently points us to our Gracious God and how He wishes us to portray what He has done for us. In response we will reach out to others:
Hymn 573 – I’ll Go Where You Want Me To Go, Dear Lord, hence our theme hymn. This is in response to
So Send I You – Hymn 573.

Our Memory Text this week tells us to
Go Forth, Go Forth With Christ – Hymn 377.

 This, then, teaches us more:
To The Name That Brings Salvation – Hymn 646 including about the trinity:
Hymn 70 – Praise Ye The Father,
Hymn 71 – Come, Thou Almighty King,
Hymn 72 – Creator Of The Stars Of Night  and
Hymn 73 – Holy, Holy, Holy.

As we grow in Christ, our aim is to
Go, Preach My Gospel – Hymn 378 (Monday).

Tuesday’s study concludes with
Lift Up The Trumpet – Hymn 213.

Our prayer on Wednesday is
Father, Help Your People – Hymn 353 so that we can then sing
O For A Faith – Hymn 533 as we go out
Seeking The Lost – Hymn 373.

Spreading the wonderful gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we are to
Tell It To Every Kindred And Nation – Hymn 202. We are to
Come, Labor On – Hymn 307 because
Far And Near The Fields Are Teeming – Hymn 358.

So, dear people, be encouraged to go forward so that we and all our friends and neighbors will be rejoicing
When We All Get To Heaven – Hymn 633.

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org/Search and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Amen!(0)

2: God’s Mission to Us – 2 – Teaching Plan

October 8, 2023 By admin

Key Thought: We see in the Bible God’s intentional reaching out to us. Thus we can understand His nature and purpose. As we develop our understanding, we can know Him and share our experience with Him.
October 14, 2023

1. Have a volunteer read John 20:21,22.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. When did God’s plan of mission for us begin?
  3. Personal Application: What is comforting about the fact that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are involved in the work of saving souls? Share your thoughts..
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “How do you think your church is seen and understood by its neighbors” Does this perception help or hinder your efforts to share the gospel with them?” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Revelation 14:6,7.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What aspects of God’s mission can you identify in the gospel presented by the first angel?
  3. Personal Application: Why is keeping the everlasting gospel central to our mission so important? Share your thoughts
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “How ids the idea of judgment linked to the everlasting good news? Why must the good news be central to the idea of judgment?.” How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read Matthew 26:16-20.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What elements of discipleship can you identify in this passage?
  3. Personal Application: What can you do to be more involved in what you have been called to do? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “Unless you live what you preach, no one will listen to you. Your life, your love, and your actions speak louder than words. All you have to do is live a good Christian life and you will be a witness to others. You don’t have to say anything.” How would you respond to your relative?

4. Have a volunteer read Revelation 7:9,10.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What does this suggest about the far-reaching geographical scope of the gospel?
  3. Personal Application: How can we reach people far and near that have a different culture, language, and religious background?. Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”Ministry of Healing, p. 148).

Amen!(0)
