Thursday: The Sabbath and Eternal Rest

May 17, 2023 By admin

The Sabbath is a place of refuge in a weary world. Each week we leave the cares of this world and enter God’s retreat center — the Sabbath. The famed Jewish author, Abraham Heschel, calls the Sabbath “a palace in time.” — The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man (New York: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2005), p. 12. Each seventh day, God’s heavenly palace descends from heaven to earth, and the Lord invites us into the glory of His presence for this 24-hour period to spend a time of intimate fellowship with Him.

In the introduction to Heschel’s book on the beauty and solemnity of the Sabbath, Susannah Heschel, his daughter, writes of the significance of the Sabbath in these words: “The Sabbath is a metaphor for paradise and a testimony to God’s presence; in our prayers, we anticipate a messianic era that will be a Sabbath, and each Shabbat prepares us for that experience: Unless one learns how to relish the taste of Sabbath … one will be unable to enjoy the taste of eternity in the world to come.” — Page XV.

At Creation, Jesus built a special dwelling for us. We can find refuge there. We can be safe there. His work is complete. It is finished. When we rest on the Sabbath, we are resting in His loving care. We are resting in anticipation of our eternal rest in the new heavens and the new earth that is soon to come.

Read Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22, 2 Peter 3:13, and Revelation 21:1. How does keeping the Sabbath point us forward to eternity?

The same God who created the earth the first time will create it again, and the Sabbath remains an eternal symbol of Him as the Creator (see Isaiah 66:23). In fact, the Jews had seen the Sabbath as a symbol, a foretaste of what was called in Hebrew the olam haba, the world to come.

The message of three angels flying through the heavens appealing for us to worship the Creator is heaven’s answer to the hopeless despair of many in the twenty-first century. It points us to our Creator, the one who first made all things, and to our Redeemer, the one who will, after the judgment, after sin is eradicated, make all things new. “Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful’” (Revelation 21:5, NKJV).

How can you personally make the Sabbath a foretaste of heaven in your own life and your family?

<–Wednesday Friday–>

Amen!(0)

8: The Sabbath and the End – Singing with Inspiration

May 16, 2023 By admin

“Three Cosmic Messages” encourages us to
Watch, Ye Saints – Hymn 598 as we near the end of this old world’s history to witness the Second Coming of our Lord, and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This is a wonderful hymn to give courage, dear people, and is our theme for this quarter.

We will be noting at times throughout the quarter that
“Tis Almost Time For The Lord To Come – Hymn 212 and we should be proclaiming the message that
Jesus Is Coming Again – Hymn 213.

There are several words and derivations of these words that are prolific throughout our week of study time:

  • Sabbath
  • Creator/Creation
  • Worship

It is astounding as to how many hymns there are to be sung about these topics, so let us get started on The Sabbath:

Hymn 396 – As Birds Unto The Genial Homeland

Hymn 387 – Come, O Sabbath Day,
Hymn 385 – Crowning Jewel Of Creation,
Hymn 392 – Dear Lord, We Come At Set Of Sun,
Hymn 388 – Don’t Forget The Sabbath,
Hymn 394 – Far From All Care,
Hymn 381 – Holy Sabbath Day,
Hymn 389 – Light Of Light, Enlighten Me,
Hymn 393 – Lord Of The Sabbath,
Hymn 382/383 – O Day Of Rest And Gladness,
Hymn 384 – Safely Through Another Week,
Hymn 40 – The Dawn Of God’s Dear Sabbath,
Hymn 386 – The Sacred Anthem Slowly Rang,
Hymn 390 – We Love Thy Sabbath, Lord,
Hymn 380 – Welcome, Day Of Sweet Repose, and
Hymn 391 – Welcome, Welcome, Day Of Rest.

Our Creator and Creation words give us another listing:

Hymn 2 – All Creatures Of Our God,
Hymn 93 – All Things Bright And Beautiful,
Hymn 98 – Can You Count The Stars?,
Hymn 640 – For Beauty of Meadows,
Hymn 565 – For The Beauty Of The Earth,
Hymn 88 – I Sing The Mighty Power Of God,
Hymn 111 – It Took A Miracle,
Hymn 89 – Let All On Earth Their Voices,
Hymn 97 – Lord Of The Boundless Curves,
Hymn 94 – Nature With Open Volume Stands,
Hymn 63 – O Come, Let Us Sing To The Lord,
Hymn 95 – Spring Has Now Unwrapped,
Hymn 96 – The Spacious Firmament,
Hymn 92 – This Is My Father’s World, and
Hymn 35 – With Songs And Honours.

And, our final major topic this week, being worship. This one eclipses the first two topics, so this listing has been limited to:

Hymn 2 – All Creatures Of Our God,
Hymn 16 – All People That On Earth Do Dwell,
Hymn 23 – All Ye Mountains, Praise The Lord,
Hymn 10 – Come, Christians, Join To Sing,
Hymn 30 – Holy God, We Praise Your Name,
Hymn 86 – How Great Thou Art,
Hymn 21 – Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise,
Hymn 12 – Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,
Hymn 14 – Let Us Praise The Name,
Hymn 15 – My Maker And My King,
Hymn 13 – New Songs Of Celebration,
Hymn 20 – O Praise Ye The Lord,
Hymn 37 – O Sing, My Soul,
Hymn 6 – O Worship The Lord,
Hymn 4 – Praise My Soul, The King,
Hymn 25 – Praise The Lord, His Glories,
Hymn 26 – Praise The Lord, You Heavens,
Hymn 1 – Praise To The Lord,
Hymn 28 – Praise We The Lord,
Hymn 29 – Sing Praise to God,
Hymn 11 – The God Of Abraham Praise, and
Hymn 35 – With Songs And Honors.

This week proves to be a “Hymn Festival” to praise the amazing God who created, blesses and cares for us.

So, dear people, be encouraged to go forward and “Lift up the trumpet and loud let it ring, Jesus IS coming again” – Hymn 213.

To learn unknown hymns, you will find the accompaniment music for each one at: https://sdahymnals.com/Hymnal/

Another great resource is for when there is a hymn you wish to sing but can’t find it in your hymnal. Go to https://www.sdahymnal.org/Search and in the search bar type a special word in that is in the hymn. I am sure you will be amazed at the help you will be given.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Amen!(0)

8: The Sabbath and the End – Teaching Plan

May 16, 2023 By admin

Key Thought : Within the Ten Commandments the Sabbath stands as its seal in that it identifies who God is, confirms the territory He rules, and reveals His right to rule.
May 20, 2023

1. Have a volunteer read Revelation 14:7, Revelation 14:10, James 2:8-13.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
  2. What does it mean when it says the hour of His judgment is (or has) come? Could this message be applied at any time in church history?
  3. Personal Application: What does judgment having come imply about our accountability and responsibility? Share your thoughts..
  4. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “What do our heredity and environment have to do with our daily choices? How can we be held accountable for character defects we didn’t choose to have? Is it possible to overcome them?” How would you respond to your relative?

2. Have a volunteer read Genesis 2:1-3, Exodus 20:9-11, Deuteronomy 5:12-15.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. Why would you connect Sabbath worship with this call in Revelation 14:6,7 to worship Him who made the heavens, earth, and everything in them?
  3. Personal Application: How does the Sabbath answer life’s important questions like where did I come from, why am I here, and where am I going? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your friends states, “Why do you Adventists emphasize the seventh-day Sabbath so much? Why do you think the day we worship is more important than the way we worship?” How would you respond to your friend?

3. Have a volunteer read Psalm 33:6-9, Hebrews 11:3.

  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What do these passages tell us about how God created the world?
  3. Personal Application: What significance would the Sabbath have if God did not create the world in six twenty-four hour periods of time? Can one be an evolutionary Creationist and a Seventh-day Adventist? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: One of your neighbors states: “How can you believe that the world was created in six literal days when the scientific evidence points to a world that is millions or billions of years old?” How would you respond to your relative?

4. Have a volunteer read Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22, 2 Peter 3:13.

  1. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
  2. What do these texts tell us about God’s creative and recreative power?
  3. Personal Application: How can you personally make the Sabbath a foretaste of heaven in your own life and in your family? Share your thoughts.
  4. Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”Ministry of Healing, p. 148).

Amen!(0)
